Federal govt aims for 3 Jualan Rahmah sales weekly in Miri, says MP

MIRI (Aug 3): The federal government aims to organise an average of three 'Jualan Rahmah' sales per week in Miri to help ease the financial burden of locals, said Miri MP Chiew Choon Man. He said this follows the increase of the programme's allocation to RM600 million as announced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim on July 23. 'Once the new allocation is disbursed and the implementation mechanism is finalised, we aim to conduct up to 12 Rahmah Sales per month, or an average of three a week,' he said in a statement yesterday. Earlier, Chiew visited a Jualan Rahmah Madani programme at Surau Darul Falah, Kampung Lembah Hijau Riam, organised by the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN) in collaboration with Emart Supermarket Riam. The Jualan Rahmah Madani programme was also held simultaneously at SMK Pujut. According to Chiew, the Jualan Rahmah initiative offers essential items such as rice, eggs, chicken, cooking oil, flour, and milk powder at up to 30 per cent discount to help reduce the cost of living. 'For the programme at Surau Darul Falah, 19 essential items were offered at subsidised prices, making it easier for residents to obtain daily necessities at more affordable rates,' he said. Chiew said that as of August 2, a total of 59 Jualan Rahmah programmes have been held in the Miri parliamentary constituency, averaging seven to eight sales per month. 'This is a marked increase compared to four to five monthly sales in 2024,' he noted. He also commended participating supermarkets for going the extra mile by offering promotions on other products during the programme, further increasing the benefits for the community. 'This shows the government's continued commitment to reaching out directly to both rural and urban communities and ensuring that assistance reaches the people in a meaningful way.' Chiew expressed his appreciation to the Madani Government and KPDN for their sustained efforts in addressing the rising cost of living, adding that such community-based programmes should be strengthened and expanded moving forward. RM31m flood mitigation plan launched for Miri River Basin, early warning system in pipeline, says MP
MIRI, Aug 1 — Several key flood mitigation projects are currently being carried out in the Miri parliamentary constituency to address recurring flood issues, said Miri MP Chiew Choon Man. Chiew, in a statement yesterday, said the initiatives were part of the government's broader efforts following major floods in Sarawak earlier this year. 'In the current parliamentary sitting, I submitted a question to the Minister of Energy Transition and Water Transformation (Petra) regarding flood mitigation plans for Miri and follow-up actions after the recent floods,' he said. He said in its reply, the ministry informed that the Department of Irrigation and Drainage (DID) is implementing several key initiatives. Among them is the Flood Mitigation Plan (RTB) for the Miri River Basin, currently underway with an allocation of RM31 million. The project is scheduled for completion in January 2026. In addition, the Flood Forecasting and Warning Programme (PRAB) is being rolled out in phases across Sarawak. 'PRAB Phase 2, which covers two major river basins in the state, is expected to be completed by 2028, while Phase 3 – involving 19 major river basins including Miri – is set to begin in March 2026,' he said. While welcoming the ministry's comprehensive plans, Chiew cautioned that successful outcomes would depend on timely execution, adequate funding, and close coordination between federal, state, and local authorities. 'I will continue to engage with the relevant agencies to monitor progress and ensure these projects deliver tangible benefits to the people of Miri,' he said. Chiew also emphasised the need for close stakeholder cooperation to make Miri a safer, more resilient, and liveable city. — The Borneo Post

Miri MP: Opposition should be constructive, not obsessed with power
Chiew says now with the Madani Government focusing on rebuilding the economy and solving past problems, the Opposition should support stability, rather than create more unrest through rallies and slander. MIRI (July 25): The Opposition should play a more constructive role in Parliament, instead of constantly stirring political instability in their desperate bid to return to power, said Miri MP Chiew Choon Man. In a statement, he criticised the planned 'Turun Anwar' rally set for tomorrow, calling it 'an irresponsible move, only reflecting the opposition's obsession with power'. 'After more than two years as the Opposition, they still fail to act like a responsible and functioning Opposition. 'They are not willing to wait for the next general election and are instead, trying to topple the government through backdoor means,' he said. Chiew said that instead of offering policy alternatives or voicing important issues, the present Opposition continued to exploit racial and religious sentiments to divide the people. 'Even in Parliament, some of them never offered constructive ideas. When given the chance to raise local issues, they would often use the opportunity to blindly attack the government.' According to Chiew, the Opposition had never presented any alternative budget despite several national budgets being tabled since the Unity Government took over. He also pointed out the lack of a serious shadow cabinet. 'This shows they are not serious about improving the country. They are only interested in power for their own gain.' Chiew further criticised the Opposition's track record when they were in power, especially during the Covid-19 pandemic. He said the people had to raise white flags due to financial hardship, while the government at that time pushed for state elections despite health risks. 'Now that the Madani Government is focused on rebuilding the economy and solving past problems, the Opposition should support stability rather than create more unrest through rallies and slander. 'Democracy should be about healthy competition during the elections, not changing governments through manipulation. 'Let's move past political drama and work together for a more united, stable, and progressive Malaysia,' said Chiew. Chiew Choon Man constructive Miri MP opposition parliament

Miri MP allocates RM90,000 to support upgrades for three houses of worship
Chiew (centre) presents the cheque to the officer in-charge of Methodist Church Tudan. MIRI (July 20): Miri MP Chiew Choon Man presented an allocation amounting to RM90,000 to three houses of worship here recently. The recipients are Masjid Ar' Rayyan in Permyjaya; Methodist Church Tudan; and Masjid Darul Istiqimah in Luak. Chiew said the funds were meant to assist with development and upgrading projects crucial for the well-being of the local communities. 'The contribution to Masjid Ar' Rayyan intends to support its development and repair works to ensure a more comfortable and conducive environment for congregants and local residents. 'For Methodist Church Tudan, the funds will be used to upgrade its learning centre and to purchase a new PA system to facilitate educational and religious activities more effectively. 'As for Masjid Darul Istiqimah, the funds are for its ongoing upgrading and development efforts to better serve its function as a community hub,' he said in a statement. Chiew said houses of worship were more than just venues for religious purposes, and described them as important platforms for community building, spiritual and moral education, and fostering harmony among people of different backgrounds. 'Improving the facilities at these places is a form of social investment that brings long-term benefits to the people, regardless of race or religion,' he said, adding his office remains open to receiving suggestions and feedback on the needs of various communities in Miri. 'I am committed to continuing financial support for other places of worship in need. It is through such collaborative efforts between community leaders, government agencies, and civil society that we can build a more harmonious, united, and prosperous Miri,' he said. Chiew also expressed his appreciation to the management committees of all three places of worship for their warm welcome and continued dedication to serving their respective communities. allocation Chiew Choon Man houses of worship lead miri
