JSH's Robotic-assisted Hysterectomy Marks Milestone In Southern Region's Cancer Care
JOHOR BAHRU, July 29 (Bernama) -- Johor Specialist Hospital (JSH) has successfully performed the Southern region's first robotic-assisted hysterectomy with sentinel node biopsy for early-stage endometrial cancer, a significant advancement in minimally invasive surgery for women's cancers. In a statement today, KPJ Healthcare Berhad said the procedure utilised robotic technology to remove the uterus and pinpoint sentinel lymph nodes, the initial sites where cancer is most likely to spread, using advanced fluorescence imaging. This precision-guided approach enables targeted lymph node sampling while reducing the need for extensive dissection, thereby minimising surgical trauma. Endometrial cancer is the most common malignancy of the female reproductive system. For older patients or those with underlying conditions such as obesity, robotic surgery provides a safer alternative to conventional open surgery, offering benefits such as smaller incisions, less blood loss and quicker recovery. 'This milestone reflects our focus on innovation under the KPJ Health System to benefit patients and strengthen clinical practice,' said KPJ Healthcare president and managing director Chin Keat Chyuan. 'By expanding access to safer, less invasive surgical techniques, we are supporting our 'Care for Life' purpose while equipping our hospitals and specialists with the tools and training they need for the future of healthcare,' he added. Consultant Gynaecologic Oncologist at JHS, Dr Ahmad Shuib Yahaya, who led the procedure, said the technique enables clinicians to precisely target the lymph nodes most likely to be affected by cancer, thereby enhancing surgical outcomes. 'This technique allows us to focus on the few lymph nodes most likely to be affected instead of removing many unnecessarily. For patients, it can mean fewer complications and a smoother recovery, while still giving us the information we need to plan treatment,' he said. Robotic surgery is gaining traction across various medical specialties in Malaysia, with JSH now incorporating the technology into gynaecologic oncology.

Johor Specialist Hospital Performs Regions First Robot-Assisted Surgery On Cancer Patient
Johor Specialist Hospital announced that it has successfully performed the Southern region's first robotic-assisted hysterectomy with sentinel node biopsy for a patient with early-stage endometrial cancer (cancer of the uterine lining). This marks an important step in broadening minimally invasive care for women facing this condition. The surgery used a robotic system to remove the uterus while also identifying and sampling the 'sentinel' lymph nodes, which are the first nodes that could show signs of cancer spread. The procedure used fluorescence imaging to help guide the surgical team in identifying the correct lymph nodes. This targeted approach helps doctors collect key information during the same operation and may prevent the need for more extensive lymph node removal. Endometrial cancer is the most common cancer of the female reproductive system. For many patients who are older or living with conditions such as obesity, traditional open procedures carry higher risks and longer recovery periods. Robotic and other keyhole techniques are designed to make surgery gentler, which may mean smaller incisions, less blood loss and shorter recovery for suitable patients. Chin Keat Chyuan, President and Managing Director of KPJ Healthcare said 'This milestone reflects our focus on innovation under the KPJ Health System to benefit patients and strengthen clinical practice. By expanding access to safer, less invasive surgical techniques, we are supporting our 'Care for Life' purpose while equipping our hospitals and specialists with the tools and training they need for the future of healthcare.' Robotic surgery is increasingly used in Malaysia across different medical fields. At JSH, it is now applied in gynaecologic oncology as part of KPJ's Health System transformation journey to expand advanced surgical options across its network, including gynaecology, urology and general surgery. KPJ Healthcare aims 70% business volume from age-related, NCD cases this year
KUALA LUMPUR: KPJ Healthcare Bhd expects age-related and non-communicable disease (NCD) cases to contribute about 70 per cent of its business volume this year. Its president and managing director Chin Keat Chyuan said that currently, about 15 per cent of Malaysia's general population is aged 60 and above. "Age comes with many associated diseases like NCDs, the three highs that we always talk about, namely high blood sugar, high cholesterol, and high blood pressure. "And all these lead to many potential issues, including oncology problems such as cancer, which is a major concern facing Malaysians,' he said in a press conference after KPJ Healthcare's 32nd annual general meeting and extraordinary general meeting, here today. Chin said these challenges represent opportunities for private healthcare providers to better serve the Malaysian population, including addressing international healthcare risk factors. "This represents a huge opportunity, and in 2025, KPJ will continue to expand our capacity, both in terms of the number of clinicians we have and the services we offer,' he said. He added that NCDs such as heart and lung diseases, neurological conditions, strokes, cancer, and orthopaedic issues provide KPJ with opportunities to serve patients using advanced surgical and medical solutions. Commenting on medical tourism, Chin said KPJ is also targeting patients from Indonesia. "I am also targeting the potential 20 per cent of Indonesia's 270 million population, that is 54 million people, who are currently travelling outside Indonesia, to seek treatment in countries such as Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, and Vietnam. "And according to data from the Malaysia Healthcare Travel Council, more than 40 per cent of those Indonesian patients are coming to Malaysia, which is contributing significantly to our health tourism industry,' he said. He said that this is an immediate business opportunity, especially as the group expands its workforce and increases the number of beds in its hospitals. "We are (also) optimising all the assets we have, such as magnetic resonance imaging machines, computed tomography scanners, and other technologies we have invested in,' he added. Also present at the press conference were KPJ Healthcare chairman Tan Sri Dr Ismail Bakar and chief financial officer Mohd Khairul Izzad Mohammed Shamsudin. - Bernama
