SHANGHAI--(BUSINESS WIRE)--On May 28, China Eastern Airlines (CEA) marked the second anniversary of the commercial operation of the C919, a domestically produced large passenger aircraft. As the world's first customer, CEA has acted as a "pioneer" and "explorer," achieving numerous "firsts" and "milestones" while establishing industry-first operational norms, procedures, and standards to ensure the C919 "achieves safety, demonstrates ambition, builds brand profile, and delivers economic benefits." On December 9, 2022, CEA took delivery of the C919, the world's first large passenger aircraft produced in China. On May 28, 2023, the first C919 operated flight MU9191 from Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport to Beijing Capital International Airport, marking the model's first commercial passenger flight. In October 2024, CEA presented its achievements in C919 Large-Scale Commercial Operation System Construction at the North Bund International Aviation Forum, promoting industry-wide collaboration in developing more mature and efficient operational models and pursuing a thriving large passenger aircraft industry. Since entering service, the C919 has attracted a growing number of passengers and maintained a strong passenger load factor of nearly 80%. Flight crews have received over 1,000 letters from passengers, praising the aircraft and service. 'Passengers have shown remarkable recognition and enthusiasm,' said Zhang Shaobo, a C919 captain. 'Many even make special round trips to experience flying on this domestically produced aircraft.' As of May 27, 2025, the C919 fleet has accumulated over 28,000 safe flight hours, operated more than 11,400 commercial flights, and carried over 1.57 million passengers. CEA has trained more than 127 C919 pilots, over 640 flight attendants, nearly 500 maintenance personnel, and 54 dispatchers. The aircraft has demonstrated stable operational and technical performance, with excellent safety records and increasing daily utilization—demonstrating its comprehensive operational capabilities. The C919 now operates on 14 premium routes, such as Shanghai-Beijing, Shanghai-Hongkong, connecting 12 cities including Shanghai, Beijing, Xi'an, Guangzhou, Chengdu, Wuhan, Taiyuan, Chongqing, Shenyang, Xiamen, Shenzhen, and Hong Kong.

Moment passenger opens plane emergency exit 'to get some air'

The young male passenger opened the emergency exit as the China Eastern Airlines flight came in to land, causing chaos in the cabin and preventing others from disembarking for 20 minutes Chaos erupted on a plane after a passenger opened an emergency exit upon landing at a Chinese airport. As the passenger jet was taxiing on the runway, the man yanked the emergency handle and deployed the evacuation slide. According to witnesses, the man said he opened the exit to 'get some fresh air'. His actions caused chaos in the cabin, and passengers were delayed from disembarking the plane for around 20 minutes. The suspect, described as a young male, was then escorted off the plane by police officers for questioning. He is accused of opening the emergency door on China Eastern Airlines flight MU5828. ‌ ‌ The flight took off from Changsha, China, and arrived at Kunming Changshui International Airport at around 8.42 am yesterday. No one was reported as injured during the drama that followed the man's decision to open the door on the runway. In China, fines for opening the emergency exit can range from £10,482 to £20,985 (CNY 100,000 and 200,000), depending on the plane and circumstances. China Eastern Airlines has been approached for comment. In March 2022, a China Eastern Airlines flight was involved in the third-deadliest aviation accident in the country's history. The domestic flight took off from Kunming Changshui International Airport bound for Guangzhou, but crashed en route, killing all 132 passengers and crew onboard. ‌ Just last month, a "claustrophobic" woman left fellow passengers terrified after opening an emergency exit during take off in Korea. There were 202 passengers and seven crew members on the Air Seoul flight RS902, which was due to fly to Jeju Airport from Gimpo International in the South Korean capital. The woman's actions led to an evacuation slide being deployed, and the flight was cancelled. The crew had just finished up making their announcements and were taxiing along the runway when the 30-year-old woman unbuckled her seatbelt and jumped up from her seat in the first few rows of the plane. According to reports, she rushed to the front of the plane and forcibly opened the emergency exit. A flight attendant tried to stop the young woman, but the door opened with a loud popping sound and the slide extended to the ground. Again in South Korea earlier this year, an airline vowed to investigate its staff after they opened an emergency exit and posed for photos on the plane wing. The incident happened while Eastar Jet Flight 703 was delayed by more than an hour. The delay was due to snow temporarily closing the runway. Images taken from afar show how three uniformed stewardesses climbed onto the left wing of the Boeing 737 to pose for pictures.

Etihad and China Eastern Airlines officially launched their joint venture

Post Views: 63 Etihad Airways and China Eastern Airlines have officially launched their landmark Joint Venture (JV). The Etihad Airways – China Eastern Airlines JV, initially announced in June 2024, now becomes operational, offering seamless connectivity and a stronger combined network. This JV signifies the long-standing ties between the UAE and China by offering expanded travel options and seamless travel experiences for passengers travelling between major Chinese cities like Shanghai, Beijing, Guangzhou, Xi'an, and Kunming, and key cities in the UAE and across the Middle East and Africa regions. The launch follows the successful arrival of China Eastern's inaugural MU237 flight from Shanghai to Abu Dhabi last week, which was celebrated with a welcome ceremony at Zayed International Airport. The service starts with four weekly frequencies and will increase to a daily frequency starting 12 September 2025, further boosting connectivity between the UAE and China. Building upon the launch of the Joint Venture, the two airlines have also signed a new agreement between their respective loyalty programmes at the Arabian Travel Market on 29 April. Starting 1 June 2025, members of Etihad Guest and Eastern Miles programmes can earn and redeem miles across both airlines' global networks — unlocking greater value and seamless travel experiences for loyalty members. Arik De, Chief Revenue and Commercial Officer of Etihad Airways, said: 'The official launch of our Joint Venture with China Eastern is a major leap forward—not just for our two airlines, but for the future of both the UAE and China. By combining our networks and aligning our loyalty programmes, we're not only expanding choice and connectivity for our guests, but also setting the foundation for a new era of cooperation, innovation, and shared success across our markets.' Wan Qingchao, Executive Vice President of China Eastern, stated: 'The launch of the Shanghai-Abu Dhabi route and the implementation of the joint business cooperation with Etihad Airways are key achievements in advancing our shared vision under the Belt and Road Initiative. Backed by a modern Zayed International Airport, we will further enhance our transit capabilities and improve travel convenience for passengers.' The partnership is the first Joint Venture between a Middle Eastern airline and a Chinese airline, setting a precedent for future bilateral aviation agreements. Both airlines will continue to align in areas including codeshare flights, joint marketing initiatives, and customer experience enhancements. The new China Eastern flight currently operates four times weekly (Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays), with a one-way flight duration of approximately 9 hours and 20 minutes. The A330 aircraft is equipped with high-speed inflight Wi-Fi, enabling passengers to stay connected throughout the journey.
