China Open 2025: Satwik-Chirag pair enters semifinals; Unnati Hooda's run ends

Indian men's doubles pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty beat Malaysia's Ong Yew Sin and Teo Ee Yi in straight games on Friday to enter the semifinals of the China Open Super 1000 tournament. This will be the duo's third semifinal appearance on the BWF Tour after it had reached the last four at the Singapore Open and India Open. Satwik-Chirag beat the Malaysians 21-18, 21-14 in a quarterfinal match which lasted 40 minutes. The Indians will now meet another Malaysian pair in Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik which had beaten them in the Singapore Open semifinals in a three-game match. Earlier in the day, Indian youngster Unnati Hooda saw her campaign end with a straight-games loss to Japan's Akane Yamaguchi in the quarterfinals in Changzhou. Third-seeded Yamaguchi, a two-time world champion, defeated the 17-year-old Hooda 21-16, 21-12 in 33 minutes to book her place in the semifinals. 'I was making so many unforced errors at times when the scores were equal. She (Yamaguchi) was very good with her drop shots and controlled the game,' said Hooda after the loss. 'I need to be more patient against her because she is really good with her defence. I can't be in a hurry to finish the point. I should be patient to wait for the right time to attack.,' added the teenager when asked about what she learned from her first meeting with World No. 4 Yamaguchi. Nevertheless, it was a breakthrough event for World No. 35 Hooda as she defeated World No. 29 Kirsty Gilmour of Scotland in straight games in the opening round before outlasting compatriot and two-time Olympic medallist P. V. Sindhu in a three-game battle in the round of 16. 'I am happy that I reached the quarterfinals in my first Super 1000 event but lots to learn from this tournament,' said Hooda.

China Open Super 1000: Satwiksairaj Rankireddy-Chirag Shetty Knocked Out After Losing To Aaron Chia-Wooi Yik

Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty once again fell short against the world No. 2 Malaysian duo, who continue to be a significant obstacle for them. India's top doubles pair, Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty, exited the China Open Super 1000 badminton tournament after a straight-game loss to Malaysian second seeds, Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik, in the semifinals on Saturday. The Asian Games champions once again fell short against the world No. 2 Malaysian duo, who continue to be a significant obstacle for them. Satwik and Chirag were defeated 13-21, 17-21 by the 2022 World champions and two-time Olympic bronze medallists, Aaron and Soh. This was their 14th encounter, with the Malaysians holding a dominant head-to-head record. Aaron and Soh had also eliminated the Indian pair in the quarterfinals of the Tokyo Olympics. Despite this setback, Satwik and Chirag can take pride in another strong performance at the Super 1000 level. They secured their place in the semifinals with a hard-fought victory over another Malaysian duo, Ong Yew Sin and Teo Ee Yi, in the quarterfinals on Friday. It has been a season of consistent performances for the Indian pair, who also reached the semifinals of the India Open, Singapore Open, and Malaysia Open earlier this year. Although they have yet to convert these deep runs into titles in 2024, their steady presence in the latter stages of major tournaments keeps them among the top contenders on the circuit. They also reached the quarterfinals at the Indonesia Open and had a second-round exit at the Japan Open last week. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. The pair also made it to the quarterfinals at the Indonesia Open but faced an early exit in the second round of the Japan Open last week, which affected their rhythm and momentum. Unnati Hooda bows out of China Open

Changzhou: India's rising badminton star Unnati Hooda's dream run ended at the China Open Super 1000 as she lost to world number 4 Akane Yamaguchi of Japan in straight games in the quarterfinals here on Friday. The 17-year-old, who scripted her biggest career win against 'idol' and two-time Olympic medallist PV Sindhu, lost 16-21, 12-21 in a match that lasted 33 minutes. With Hooda's exit, India's singles campaign in the tournament came to an end. In the opening game, Hooda kept pace with Yamaguchi early on but failed to sustain the momentum, with the Japanese star reeling off five consecutive points at one stage to take it 21-16. Hooda's best run was taking three points in a row. The second game followed a similar script. Despite a brief fightback where she won four straight points, Hooda fell behind as Yamaguchi strung together six consecutive points and wrapped up the second game 21-12. Overall, Yamaguchi won 42 of the 70 points played across both games. Hooda on Thursday stunned former world champion Sindhu 21-16, 19-21, 21-13 in the pre-quarterfinals. India's top men's doubles pair Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty will be in action later in the day against Malaysia's Yew Sin Ong and Ee Yi Teo in the quarterfinals.

China Open: Sat-Chi advance to semis, Unnati out in QFs

CHENNAI: Ace Indian men's doubles pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty punched theirticket to the semifinals but up-and-coming badminton star Unnati Hooda's dream run ended at the China Open Super 1000 on Friday. The reigning Asian Games champions picked a comfortable 21-18, 21-14 win over familiar foes Ong Yew Sin and Teo Ee Yi of Malaysia in 40 minutes. They will take on the world number two pair of Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik of Malaysia in the last four stage. This would be their third semi-final appearance, and second against the World number two pair. They lost to them in the Singapore open in May this year. 'There have been tournaments where we have not done so well, be it the Singapore Open, where we felt winning one game would be great, but we ended up in the semis which exceeded our expectations,' Chirag said. Previously, the duo stumbled at the pre-quarterfinal stage. The familiarity of the opponents helped them plan their game. 'In the first set we felt no matter what we had to be fast against them and get on the attack as much as possible. In the second set, we knew they couldn't (continue to) play fast, so we focused on the front end. We also ensured that they don't get creative on the net and not give them chances so we attacked their services,' Satwik said.
