Chinese centre Yang Hansen to skip Fiba Asia Cup to focus on developing game with Portland
Mainland Chinese social media users heaped praise on the Chinese Basketball Association after the governing body announced on Thursday that promising young centre Yang Hansen would not participate in the national team's training camp or the 2025 Fiba Asia Cup, allowing him to focus on his development with the Portland Trail Blazers. Advertisement Yang, the No 16 pick at last month's NBA Draft, will attend two short training camps hosted by the Trail Blazers beginning on August 11. 'After finishing his NBA Summer League stint, Chinese men's basketball player Yang Hansen immediately reported to head coach Guo Shiqiang about his experience in the draft combine and Summer League in the United States,' the Chinese Basketball Association said in a statement. 'He applied to the national team and the Chinese Basketball Association, hoping to participate in two short-term training camps organised by the Portland Trail Blazers starting on August 11 in order to better integrate with his new team and further improve his skills. These camps are designed for rookies and players who need continued development based on their Summer League performance.' The association added that the scheduling conflict between the Trail Blazers' camps and the Fiba Men's Asia Cup, held at Jeddah from August 5 to 17, prompted a decision to prioritize Yang's long-term development. Yang Hansen said he had learned a lot from playing in in four NBA Summer League games. Photo: AP Basketball fans on social media said in unison the CBA 'deserved praises' for their decisions.

Trail Blazers pick China's Yang in NBA draft first-round surprise
New York – Birthday boy Yang Hansen is headed to the Portland Trail Blazers as the 16th overall selection in the NBA draft, just the third Chinese player ever chosen in the first round. The 7ft 2in (2.18m) center, who made his Chinese Basketball Association debut in 2023 and was an All-Star in each of his first two seasons with the Qingdao Eagles, had been tipped as a second-round pick. That was even after his stock had risen after a promising performance at the NBA draft combine, where some of his passes had earned comparisons to the Denver Nuggets' Serbian star Nikola Jokic — a three-time NBA Most Valuable Player. He had individual workouts with 11 teams, including the Trail Blazers who, after swapping the 11th and 16th draft selections with the Memphis Grizzlies, grabbed Yang on Wednesday. 'The Blazers had scouts scouting me in China the last couple years,' Yang said. 'I also had a pre-workout with them last month. Everything went very well and I got along with all the front-office people. 'But at the end of the day, this is sort of beyond my wildest imagination.' Icon Yao Ming, who was the number one selection in 2002, and Yi Jianlian — who was sixth overall in 2007 — are the only other Chinese players chosen in the first round of the draft. It made for a sensational birthday for Yang, who turned 20 on Thursday. Not included among the likely first-round prospects and given a place in the near-stage waiting room, he clambered down from the stands dressed in a white suit to shake NBA commissioner Adam Silver's hand. Yang said that after the 15th selection had been announced he noticed more cameras on him. 'I just thought something was off or thought something was about to happen. So that's when I found out,' Yang said. But it wasn't a coincidence that he was in the stands to see the league's 30 teams make their first-round selections. Despite the pundits' predictions, he was confident he could be among them. 'I was expecting to be selected at the end of the first round,' he said. 'So this is definitely a big surprise for me to be selected in the middle of the first round.'

US basketball players Troy Gillenwater and Montrezl Harrell test positive for cannabis in Chinese Basketball Association league
Troy Akeem Gillenwater (via Getty Images) Two US basketball players—Montrezl Dashay Harrell and Troy Akeem Gillenwater—tested positive for banned substances during in-competition testing by the Chinese Anti-Doping Agency in April. The Chinese Basketball Association (CBA) confirmed the doping offenses and will await the agency's decision before it issues disciplinary action. Both of the banned substances detected are carboxy-THC, a cannabis metabolite prohibited in competition by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA). Chinese Basketball Association awaits final decision following doping infractions by Montrezl Harrell and Troy Gillenwater The Chinese Basketball Association officially announced on Tuesday that two of its foreign signings, Xinjiang Flying Tigers' Montrezl Dashay Harrell and Guangdong Southern Tigers' Troy Akeem Gillenwater, both tested positive for carboxy-THC in in-competition testing. Both were tested in April and relinquished their "B" sample analysis rights. Carboxy-THC, as it occurs naturally in cannabis, is banned by the World Anti-Doping Agency for competition. The detection of this psychoactive cannabinoid in the system of a competitor constitutes an immediate doping offense under global anti-doping rules. Montrezl Harrell, a veteran NBA player, was among this season's biggest signings for the Xinjiang Flying Tigers. A player who caused quite a stir during his time with high-flying plays and won the Karl Malone Award in 2015 with the Louisville Cardinals, Harrell's positive result could jeopardize his overseas prospects. Montrezl Harrell interview - #TheGazeys NBL25 Troy Gillenwater, a one-time college basketball player at New Mexico State University who has since established a worldwide career with stops in numerous overseas leagues, was playing for the Guangdong Southern Tigers when the positive test was logged. His test was conducted just one day after Harrell's. The CBA stated unequivocally its zero-tolerance stance regarding doping in a forcefully worded statement: 'The CBA firmly opposes any form of doping violations and maintains a zero-tolerance stance on anti-doping efforts. We are committed to safeguarding the integrity and fairness of basketball and will not tolerate any breaches of anti-doping rules.' The two players will have to wait for the final penalties, but this matter serves as a warning to international athletes playing under WADA terms in foreign competition. More clarification will emerge once the Chinese Anti-Doping Agency has made its decision. Game On Season 1 continues with Mirabai Chanu's inspiring story. Watch Episode 2 here.
