Malaysia Says Government Not Involved in AI Project Using Chinese Huawei Chips
The Malaysian government appears to be reconsidering its previous announcement that its Strategic Artificial Intelligence Infrastructure project would run on DeepSeek and Huawei Ascend chips, which the U.S. Commerce Department recently The Malaysian Ministry of Investment, Trade, and Industry (MITI) on May 21 published a statement addressing media reports that questioned whether the project would violate U.S. export control laws. 'The said initiative was not developed, endorsed, or coordinated by the Government of Malaysia, nor does it form part of any Government-to-Government agreement or nationally mandated technology programme,' MITI The U.S. Commerce Department's Bureau of Industry and Security had on May 13 issued a reminder that Huawei Ascend chips were likely developed in violation of U.S. export controls, and that the Chinese makers used restricted U.S. technology to create the AI chips. Malaysia's statement notes that AI-powered government infrastructure would first go through 'appropriate due diligence and uphold highest standards of applicable global laws' and that 'Malaysia remains committed to full compliance with all applicable export control laws,' referencing the World Trade Organization and affirming its right to set sovereign policies. The statement did not address DeepSeek or the Huawei Ascend chips directly. Related Stories 5/15/2025 5/14/2025 Huawei told Reuters it has not yet sold Ascend chips to Malaysia-based technology infrastructure company Skyvast, its partner in the Malaysia infrastructure project. MITI and Skyvast did not respond to an inquiry from The Epoch Times by publication time. Global AI Race At a launch event on May 19 at the St. Regis Kuala Lumpur, Malaysian Deputy Minister of Communications Teo Nie Ching announced a 'transformative' national AI strategy in collaboration with Huawei, Skyvast, Chinese battery maker Leadyo, and Shanghai Free-Trade Zone executives. In a Ching said there would be a phased rollout of 3,000 Ascend chips by 2026, forming 'the backbone of Malaysia's national AI grid.' She said that for years, Malaysia was kept out of the front of the race by 'foreign infrastructures, cloud dependencies, and barriers to high-performing computing' but that the infrastructure the tech partners were bringing would change all that. 'We are not merely adapting to the age of Artificial Intelligence. We are shaping it, securing it, and leading it. And we are doing so on our terms, with trusted partners, and with the wellbeing of our people at heart,' Ching said. She touted Malaysia's relationship with China, saying the project 'advances one of Malaysia's most strategic bilateral partnerships' and co-develops a new model of 'cross-border AI governance' as the Southeast Asian nation would become China's first international AI partner. Meanwhile, the United States is set to roll out a new AI diffusion rule to position the American AI tech 'stack' as a first choice for international partners. The Malaysia–China partnership was announced a week after the United States revealed AI partnerships with the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia. David Sacks, the Trump administration crypto and AI czar, said on social media platform X that Malaysia's announcement was a 'harbinger of things to come.' 'As I've been warning, the full Chinese stack is here. We rescinded the Biden Diffusion Rule just in time. The American AI stack needs to be unleashed to compete,' Sacks The Biden administration had finalized an AI diffusion rule in January that would have sorted countries broadly into three tiers, with different levels of access to American AI technology. The Trump administration rescinded the rules days before they would have gone into effect in May, and has been in favor of promoting global adoption of American AI technology with a much broader approach than the previous administration, as seen with President Donald Trump's recent multibillion-dollar AI deals in the Middle East. Lawmakers on both sides of the political aisle have Reuters contributed to this report.

Aptos CEO says crypto will power ‘one global market' for everyone
Avery Ching, co-founder and CEO of Aptos, believes crypto is finally ready to deliver on the promises it made over a decade ago — with Aptos playing a starring role. Speaking with TheStreet Roundtable host Scott Melker, Ching made a bold case for why Aptos could become the 'global trading engine' of the future. 'The technology is finally there,' Ching said. 'You have something like an Aptos that can do payments in under a hundredth of a cent. Finality times… about 600 milliseconds today and going to get faster over time.' He added that Aptos could scale to rival — or even surpass — the likes of Mastercard and Visa. That level of speed and efficiency, Ching argued, makes it possible to build a permissionless, composable global trading infrastructure — one that could absorb use cases currently handled by siloed institutions like the NYSE and NASDAQ. 'We can actually build out systems that are going to be one global market,' Ching said. 'An example would be like if you want to take out a loan and then make a trade and then upon the trade do another action — you can string all those things together on a blockchain permissionlessly.' When asked if tokenizing traditional assets is required to reach that level of integration, Ching acknowledged it's not an overnight process — but inevitable. 'We'll start to see even IPOs happening on-chain,' he said. 'It'll be piecemeal… but as time progresses, it starts to become this avalanche of activity.' Ching also touched on financial accessibility, highlighting that 'even for today, a lot of the people in the US don't invest into equities because it's just too hard.' In that context, crypto's ability to create open, borderless financial access becomes revolutionary. With final settlement times faster than Visa and costs far below the SWIFT system, Ching believes the world is on the cusp of a financial overhaul, 'These financial barriers have been completely unlocked… We're going to see the global economy elevated to such a scale that we never imagined.' Aptos is a Layer 1 blockchain built for speed, scalability, and reliability, aiming to support the next generation of decentralized applications. It was developed by former Meta engineers and leverages the Move programming language for enhanced security. Sabah sees 8.9pc drop in Tuberculosis cases
Published on: Tuesday, May 13, 2025 Published on: Tue, May 13, 2025 By: Mardinah Jikur Text Size: Ching, Maria and other officials at the launching ceremony. SANDAKAN: Sabah recorded an 8.9 per cent drop in tuberculosis (TB) cases in epidemiological week 18 (ME18) up to early May this year, compared to the same period in 2024, said State Health Director, Dr Maria Suleiman. She said a total of 307 TB cases were reported in ME18 this year, compared to 337 cases in the same week last year. Throughout the preceding year, a total of 6,099 TB cases were reported. Up until ME18 this year, the cumulative number of TB cases recorded by the State Health Department (JKNS) is 1,993. 'As for leprosy, six cases were reported in ME18 this year, down from 10 in the same week last year – marking a 40 per cent drop. In total, 57 cases were recorded in 2024, while 35 have been reported so far this year. 'In light of this, JKNS continues to implement various activities and awareness programmes on TB and leprosy to ensure the public remains informed.' She said this during a press conference after attending the State-level World Tuberculosis and Leprosy Day at the PPR Taman Harmoni Hall, here, recently. The event was officiated by Sandakan Parliamentary Coordinator, Tang Tzu Ching, who represented Sandakan MP, Vivian Wong Shir Yee. Also present were Tanjong Papat Assemblyman, Datuk Frankie Poon Ming Fung, Jetama Water Sdn Bhd Chairman, Liau Fui Fui, Sandakan Health Officer Dr Mohd Faiz Gahamat, Senior Principal Assistant Director of the JKNS TB and Leprosy Branch, Dr Michelle May D Goroh, Sabah Anti Tuberculosis Association (Sabata) President Julius Raymond, representatives from the Malaysian Leprosy Relief Association (MaLRA) Sandakan, and others. Dr Maria said early detection and screening are important to ensure patients receive treatment until they fully recover. Meanwhile, Ching acknowledged and appreciated JKNS' ongoing efforts in implementing awareness programmes about the disease. He also urged the public to seek prompt treatment and undergo check-ups at nearby clinics or hospitals, while commending JKNS for conducting mobile X-ray screenings and health examinations at event venues and in remote areas. 'This will also support efforts to achieve the target of eliminating TB by 2035, as set by the health authorities,' he said. Earlier, Vivian said JKNS has undertaken various efforts, not only focused on improving healthcare facilities, human resources, staff welfare, and patient treatment, but also on promoting a healthy lifestyle culture among the people of Sabah. 'This year's theme, 'Unite to End TB: Strengthen Commitment, Funding and Services', also highlights the strong commitment of the Madani Government and the Ministry of Health Malaysia (MOH) to eliminate TB as a public health burden,' she said. Vivian also said to overcome the stigma against leprosy patients and ensure fair and timely access to treatment, public education campaigns and community involvement are essential. 'This can be done through various advocacy efforts that are easy to understand, consistent, and inclusive, covering remote areas and endemic regions. 'In addition, psychosocial support and sharing success stories of recovered patients can help foster acceptance and reduce misconceptions about the disease,' she said. Her text speech was read by Ching.
