Chong Wei advises injured Tze Yong to seek treatment abroad

National men's singles shuttler Ng Tze Yong . — IZZRAFIQ ALIAS/The Star PUTRAJAYA: Badminton legend Datuk Lee Chong Wei has suggested that national men's singles shuttler Ng Tze Yong seek treatment abroad in a bid to recover fully from an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury. It is understood that Chong Wei met Tze Yong last Saturday to offer encouragement and explore the best possible options to help the 24-year-old revive his career. Tze Yong is currently undergoing prehabilitation to strengthen his knee and surrounding muscles ahead of surgery. However, Chong Wei believes post-surgery treatment abroad could lead to a more effective recovery. "This is a crucial period for him. For any athlete, injuries are the biggest fear. I've tried to motivate him, but the most important thing is his own will to bounce back from this setback," said Chong Wei, a member of the Road to Gold committee. "At the same time, I've spoken to the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) about the possibility of sending him overseas for treatment, perhaps in Germany to give him another shot at recovery. "BAM will hold further discussions with the National Sports Institute (NSI) and the National Sports Council (NSC) to explore the best medical and rehabilitation support for him." Chong Wei also advised Tze Yong not to rush his return to competition, warning that a premature comeback could worsen his condition if recovery is not handled properly. "He needs more time to heal. There's no need to hurry back onto court. He already had a recurring back injury earlier this year, and now he's dealing with a serious knee issue. "I know his back is still not fully strong, and he relies heavily on his legs that may have contributed to the ACL injury. "I told Tze Yong that he needs to undergo surgery and focus fully on a proper recovery process," said Chong Wei. Chong Wei also consulted former NSI director general Dr Ramlan Aziz to discuss a potential recovery plan for Tze Yong, with hopes that he can return to the national team, possibly in time for the Thomas Cup next year. However, this would ultimately depend on BAM's planning. Tze Yong's latest injury could not have come at a worse time. He suffered the ACL tear during the first round of the Malaysian Masters two weeks ago while facing Hong Kong's Angus Ng Ka Long at the Axiata Arena in Bukit Jalil. It was only his fourth tournament of the year, having just returned from a lengthy layoff due to a recurring back injury. More worrying still, his world ranking has plummeted to No. 199, and he is no longer eligible to apply for a protected ranking anytime soon, having already done so recently for his back injury.

Chong Wei comes close to becoming online scam victim, urges all to be careful

Lee Chong Wei posted the contact details of the scammer on his social media. PETALING JAYA: Not even a national icon is safe from scammers and Datuk Lee Chong Wei nearly became their latest target. The three-time Olympic silver medallist Chong Wei revealed that he received a suspicious call around noon on Thursday (May 8) from someone claiming to be 'Roslan' from the Cyberjaya Cyber Crime Prevention Unit. What shocked him most was that the caller also read out his identity card and phone numbers, and accused him of being involved in a scam operation based in Melaka. Outraged by the baseless accusation, Chong Wei insisted on reporting the matter to the police and demanded the office address of the so-called enforcement officer. The call, however, was abruptly cut off after a brief exchange. Following the incident, Chong Wei urged the public to remain vigilant and not fall prey to these syndicates, which often use fear and greed to manipulate victims. 'Never reveal your IC number, bank details, passwords or OTP codes. Don't make any transfers or scan QR codes sent to you. Always verify through official channels – call legitimate numbers or visit actual websites or offices. 'If the call involves a family member, contact them directly. "Mark scam numbers on apps or your phone to help warn others. Remind your loved ones, especially the elderly. "Set a 'secret password' for your family if needed. If your data has been compromised, change your passwords immediately, freeze your accounts and lodge a police report. Keep all evidence,' he wrote on his social media.

Penang's Wei Xiang all smiles with chance of training under coach Seu Bock

IPOH: Shuttler Kong Wei Xiang is thrilled to have Datuk Tey Seu Bock coaching him in the junior men's singles team. The 16-year-old Wei Xiang, who is from Penang just like Datuk Lee Chong Wei, greatly admires the latter. And he could not contain his excitement when he got to know that he would be training under Seu Bock, who used to guide Chong Wei along with Indonesian Hendrawan. Seu Bock was moved from the senior team to the junior set-up last October in a bid to raise the standards of the juniors and Wei Xiang is determined to learn as much as he can from the experienced coach. "I grew up watching Chong Wei very often. I'm from Butterworth which is about 30 minutes from his hometown in Bukit Mertajam," said Wei Xiang. "I'm inspired to become a world class player like him. So, I'm very excited and thankful to get to learn under coach Seu Bock as he is a top coach and used to guide Chong Wei. Even at a young age, Wei Xiang, who started playing badminton when he was seven after encouragement from his father, is not afraid to dream big. The youngster hopes to one day end Malaysia's wait for a World Championships title in the men's singles and gold in the Olympics. Chong Wei came closest to both crowns multiple times but was narrowly denied by both China's Lin Dan and Chen Long. "My dream is to reach the world's top 10 rankings and win the world title in the singles and Olympic gold which Malaysia has never won yet," said Wei Xiang. "I know I have a long journey ahead of me though and I have to keep working hard to become successful." Wei Xiang proved his potential when he captured the Under-16 national title last year. The teen has now set his sights on winning the Under-18 crown and stayed on track by beating Selangor's Beh Yu Wei 15-8, 15-8 at the Academy Badminton Perak in Ipoh yesterday to book his spot in the fifth round. Wei Xiang, who is the top seed in the tourney, will play Perak's Loh Chee Kiat next for a place in the quarter-finals.

Walk the talk first before asking for high pay

KUALA LUMPUR: National badminton legend Datuk Lee Chong Wei stresses that shuttlers must prove their capabilities on the court first before demanding lucrative salaries. Commenting on claims that a handful of shuttlers are asking for lucrative salaries from the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM), Chong Wei said this would not be a big problem if the players perform at a level that translates to success. "I'm not saying shuttlers cannot ask for high salaries, can … but what is important is that they must first prove it (in terms of performance). They must be committed and contribute to the association. "These days I always say that our shuttlers are pampered but if they are committed, no matter how much (salary) they ask for, the association will try to assist," he said when met at the Ministry of Youth and Sports Aidilfitri Open House 2025 celebration at the Axiata Arena in Bukit Jalil here today. Chong Wei, 42, said problems arise when players who have yet to reach a certain level in their careers start making unreasonable demands. "Some have yet to reach a high level but are already asking for a high salary. When they don't get it, they say they will turn professional," he said. The three-time Olympic silver medallist, however, hopes that the new leaders set to helm BAM will review the issue of players' salaries and make positive changes. Meanwhile, Chong Wei expressed his amazement at the determination and drive of national track cyclist Datuk Mohd Azizulhasni Awang, who has decided to quit the national team and ride as a professional. Chong Wei, who is a committee member of the Road to Gold (RTF) programme, said he fully supported the decision made by the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games silver medallist. "We hope he will win more gold medals (in upcoming championships)," added the three-time world championships runner-up.
