HK Actor Chow Yun Fat Celebrates His 70th Birthday With A Run With Friends

Renowned Hong Kong actor Chow Yun Fat (周润发) recently hit another major milestone: turning 70 years old! So how did the star celebrate the occasion? By doing what he loves the most – going on a run! The actor, born in 1955, turned 70 years old yesterday (18th May 2025, Sunday). Known for his love of running and hiking, Chow Yun Fat celebrated his birthday by going for a run with a few of his celebrity friends. HK actor Michael Miu (苗僑偉), actress Jaime Chik (戚美珍), and singer Calvin Choy (蔡一智) were amongst those who joined Chow Yun Fat on his birthday run. Michael and Calvin also took to social media to share birthday wishes for the HK film icon. In his post, Michael called Chow Yun Fat a 'respected big brother' and a role model in life and work. On the other hand, Calvin wrote in his post, 'Happy 70 birthday to my super idol', before wishing the actor good health and longevity. Many other Hong Kong stars echoed the birthday wishes, including actor Carlos Chan (陳家樂) and actress Priscilla Wong (黃翠如). The latter is also one of Chow Yun Fat's 'running buddies' who has joined him on his daily runs. Chow Yun Fat's decision to celebrate his birthday with a run highlights his impressive strength and active lifestyle at his older age. The actor even participated in a half-marathon in early February, finishing the run in two hours and 24 minutes. He's also proven to be better at running than his younger peers. Last year, the star ran a 10km run with his protege, former TVB actress Natalie Tong (唐詩詠), only to beat the 44-year-old by 4 minutes. On the evening of his birthday, the star had a more traditional celebration with family and friends. In a photo, Chow Yun Fat posed alongside his wife, Jasmine Tan, in front of a peach-shaped cake. In Chinese culture, peaches symbolise longevity and are common at birthday celebrations. The star also amused attendees by jokingly feeding a piece of cake to his pet dog, saying, 'You can't eat too much sweets, but a little is still good.' Happy belated birthday to Chow Yun Fat! Here's to more years of acting and running! Sources: Sin Chew Daily, Instagram (1)(2)

Hong Kong's On Lee Noodle Soup, with its 50 years-plus fish ball noodle soup legacy, to open in Pavilion KL in June

KUALA LUMPUR, May 15 — Famed fish ball noodle soup shop On Lee Noodle Soup from Hong Kong's Shau Kei Wan will be hitting our shores by the end of June. It will open at the Level 4 Connection of Pavilion KL, sandwiched between Arthur's Storehouse and the yet-to-open Naughty Babe Dirty Duck, just one level below Dadi Cinema. According to a write-up on its hoarding, the shop was started back in 1966 — as a humble dai pai dong opposite Tin Hau temple — by Cheung Kwong Chung who had apprenticed at a fish ball noodle shop in Sheung Wan. When the area was redeveloped, the stall was allocated a space in a municipal building in Fortress Hill. However they didn't want to leave the area, hence Cheung and his wife decided to open a shop on East Street in 1993. After he died in 1997, his wife continued the business. As time passed, their three children returned to help with the business, giving up their careers to carry on their father's legacy. Throughout the years, they have maintained the practice of making the fish balls daily using fresh eel. It's served with a soup made using pork bones, beef bones, fish, dried shrimps and a variety of spices. The shop in Hong Kong also serves a signature butter toast with condensed milk and on Sunday, fried fish skin, a by-product of their fish ball making process, is available in limited quantities. Apparently Hong Kong stars Chow Yun-fat and Ekin Cheng have eaten at the shop. On the hoarding, there's also a photo of Hong Kong actress Charmaine Sheh, saying she'll be at their grand opening of On Lee Noodle Shop in KL. Sheh is famous for her work in Hong Kong and China television serials, including the iconic Story of Yanxi Palace, the most watched television show in China in 2018. Last year she picked up the best actress award for the third time at the TVB Anniversary Awards, a first-time achievement in the industry, for her gripping role as the passionate television news anchor on The Queen of News. Apparently she's a big fan of On Lee's cuttlefish balls, which she tried at a hotpot restaurant, as seen in their social media post from 2022. On Lee Noodle Soup, Lot C4-06-01, Level 4 Connection, Pavilion KL, 168, Jalan Bukit Bintang, Kuala Lumpur. James Foley, director of ‘Fifty Shades' sequels and award-winning ‘Glengarry Glen Ross' starring Al Pacino, dies at 71

LOS ANGELES, May 9 — James Foley, the acclaimed director behind Glengarry Glen Ross, and who worked with stars like Al Pacino, Madonna, and Chow Yun-fat, has died at 71-years old. His death occurred at his home here earlier this week, after a year-long battle with brain cancer, The Los Angeles Times reported today, citing Foley's representative Florent Lamy. 'James Foley was not only a talented director but also a dear friend. 'He was one of my very first clients, and over time, he became someone very special in my life,' Lamy was quoted as saying. Foley was best known for his dark, atmospheric films and collaborations with Hollywood stars such as Al Pacino, Sean Penn, Madonna, and Halle Berry. His directing debut came in 1984 with Reckless, a musical romance starring Daryl Hannah and Aidan Quinn. He followed that with At Close Range in 1986, a neo-noir film that starred Sean Penn and Christopher Walken and featured the Madonna hit Live to Tell. Madonna, who was then married to Penn, went on to work with Foley on multiple music videos and her 1987 feature film Who's That Girl. But Foley's most iconic film was the 1992 adaptation of Glengarry Glen Ross, which earned Pacino an Oscar nomination and a Golden Globe. The all-star cast also included Jack Lemmon, Alec Baldwin, Ed Harris, and Alan Arkin. In the 1990s, Foley directed After Dark, My Sweet, a film entertainment news outlet Variety praised as 'as potent as a snakebite' for its emotional realism and neo-noir style. His later film work included Confidence, The Chamber, The Corrupter starring Chow, Two Bits, and Perfect Stranger with Bruce Willis and Berry. Foley also directed Fifty Shades Darker and Fifty Shades Freed, sequels to the global hit Fifty Shades of Grey. In television, he directed an episode of the original Twin Peaks and later worked on hit series including House of Cards, Billions, Wayward Pines, and Hannibal. Born in Brooklyn, Foley studied film at the University of Southern California, where a chance meeting with Harold and Maude director Hal Ashby helped launch his career.
