Knicks on the verge of adding Summer League champion coach to coaching staff

The New York Knicks are on the verge of making another crucial coaching hire as they look to fill out new head coach Mike Brown's coaching staff. Knicks close to adding Chris Jent to coaching staff According to Frank Isola, the Knicks and Charlotte Hornets assistant coach Chris Jent are close to an agreement to join the staff. Isola added that Jent would become the team's offensive coordinator upon being hired. Jent spent last season as an assistant with the Hornets and was the head coach of their Summer League squad that won the championship in Las Vegas last month. He has 17 years of experience as an assistant coach and 18 games of head coaching experience at the NBA level. Jent could be a strong fit for Brown's staff, as he is an offensive-minded coach who can help lift Brown's spacing-heavy philosophy. Jent has worked with Brown in the past during their time together in Cleveland with the Cavaliers, including the 2007 NBA Finals team. Jent will be a valuable addition to the coaching staff Jent has also coached with the Philadelphia 76ers, Orlando Magic, Sacramento Kings, Atlanta Hawks, and Los Angeles Lakers. In his 18 games as a head coach with the Magic, he posted a 5-13 record. New York is looking to revamp their offense after it endured big struggles in the latter portion of last season. To address that, they signed Jordan Clarkson and Guerschon Yabusele, along with hiring Brown, and now they appear to have a coach in place to help run the offense led by Jalen Brunson. As they fill out the rest of the coaching staff, the organization has its sights set on winning a championship this year Related Headlines Yankees 3, Astros 5: Good news and bad news following yet another Devin Williams meltdown Yankees future star enters exclusive prospect list Former Yankees star reflects on time with the team: 'Getting traded there was the best thing that ever happened to me' Yankees manager reveals there is a 'good chance' Giancarlo Stanton plays the outfield this weekend

Former Knicks player hired as associate head coach under Mike Brown

Former Knicks player hired as associate head coach under Mike Brown originally appeared on The Sporting News An ex-New York Knicks swingman is joining new coach Mike Brown's bench for the 2025-26 season. Brown has been reshaping New York's assistant lineup since taking over for former Knicks head coach Tom Thibodeau earlier this summer. Sources inform Shams Charania of ESPN that Charlotte Hornets assistant coach Chris Jent will serve as Mike Brown's associate head coach. His agent, Tyler Glass of CSE Talent, oversaw terms of the deal with the Knicks, Charania adds. Jent logged the 1996-97 season on New York, during the team's halcyon Patrick Ewing days. Jent, 55, was a 6-foot-7 shooting guard/small forward in his playing days. After going undrafted in 1992 out of Ohio State, he spent most of his first two pro seasons playing for other leagues. He latched on with the Houston Rockets at the end of their 1993-94 regular season, ultimately winning a championship with Hakeem Olajuwon and co. After playing just three regular season contests for Houston, Jent suited up for 11 playoff bouts. Jent's tenure there ddn't last long. After stints in the Continental Basketball League, Australia, and Italy, Jent's next NBA opportunity arrived in 1997. He spent just three games with the Knicks that year. Jent continued playing elsewhere through the 2001-02 season, ultimately retiring as a member of Italian squad Pavia. Jent has been on the coaching side of the game for over two decades, mostly in the NBA. He kicked off his career in that capacity with a stint on the Larry Brown/Allen Iverson-era Philadelphia 76ers, and also worked as an assistant with the Orlando Magic, Cleveland Cavaliers, Sacramento Kings, Atlanta Hawks, and Los Angeles Lakers before landing on Charles Lee's Charlotte staff last year. Jent has also coached at the college and G League (then D League) ranks. New York's two rumored finalists for the role had been Indiana Pacers assistant coach Mike Weiner and Jent. Weiner dropped out of consideration recently, leaving Jent as the expected frontrunner. He will help guide the club's new-look offense under Brown's stewardship. Knicks tab Hornets assistant Chris Jent to join Mike Brown's staff as associate head coach: Report

New York Knicks coach Mike Brown finally has a top assistant for his new staff. Charlotte Hornets assistant Chris Jent is finalizing an agreement to become Brown's associate head coach, ESPN's Shams Charania reports. Jent, fresh off winning the NBA Summer League championship by coaching the Hornets to a 6-0 record, joins Brown's staff after one season as an assistant with Charles Lee in Charlotte. He has been an NBA assistant coach with eight teams over 17 seasons, mixing in stints as a head coach for the D-League's Bakersfield Jam and an assistant with Ohio State, his alma mater. Following a four-year playing career with the Buckeyes, Jent played in the CBA and overseas in Italy, Spain and Greece, in addition to brief stops with the Houston Rockets and Knicks. Previously, Brown pursued New Orleans Pelicans associate head coach James Borrego for his No. 1 assistant, but the Pelicans would not let him out of his contract to make a lateral move. Brown's next choice was Indiana Pacers assistant Mike Weinar, but he chose to stay on Rick Carlisle's staff and keep his family in Indianapolis. Brown reportedly quickly moved on to Jent, who will fill an "offensive coordinator" role as associate head coach on the Knicks' staff. Brendan O'Connor will be the "defensive coordinator," leaving Tyronn Lue's staff with the Los Angeles Clippers to join Brown. The Knicks hired Brown as their head coach last month after firing Tom Thibodeau. Thibodeau was fired following his fifth season despite coaching the team to the conference finals for the first time in 25 years. New York was then prevented from interviewing several established coaches including Jason Kidd, Ime Udoka, Quin Snyder, Chris Finch and Billy Donovan. Rick Brunson, Jordan Brink, Mark Bryant, Maurice Cheeks and Darren Erman remain from Thibodeau's staff, while Brown has added Charles Allen and Riccardo Fois from his former staff with the Sacramento Kings, in addition to O'Connor and Jent.

Knicks a ‘leading candidate' for Charlotte Hornets assistant

The new-look coaching staff for the New York Knicks is starting to come to fruition, with the team close to making another new addition on Sunday. Mike Brown is obviously the biggest change to the coaching staff. He was hired on July 2 to replace Tom Thibodeau. Since then, he has begun the process of filling out the rest of his staff. Per ESPN's Frank Isola, Charlotte Hornets assistant coach Chris Jent has become a leading candidate to join Mike Brown's staff. Jent recently coached the Hornets' Summer League squad to the championship this summer. Jent has been in the coaching realm since 2003. He has spent time as an assistant with the Philadelphia 76ers, Orlando Magic, Cleveland Cavaliers, Sacramento Kings, Atlanta Hawks, Los Angeles Lakers and the Hornets in the NBA, and for Ohio State in the NCAA. He was an assistant to Mike Brown from 2006-2009 in Cleveland. Jent has very brief head coaching experience in the NBA, filling in as an interim for the Magic in the 2004-05 season. Jent led the Magic to a 5-13 record in 18 games as head coach. Oddly enough, Jent also has incredibly brief experience with the Knicks as an NBA player. In the 1996-97 season, Jent appeared in three games with New York, averaging 2.0 points per game. If hired, Jent will join Rick Brunson and Brendan O'Connor while the remainder of the staff is filled out before the season begins. The expectation is that Jent would take over an offensive coordinator role of sorts if he is in fact brought in.
