Minnesota Twins Trade Veteran Starter to Division Rival
The Minnesota Twins have already indicated they are open for business when it comes to their impending free agents. That group has six players including Harrison Bader, Willi Castro, Christian Vazquez, Chris Paddack, Ty France, and Danny Coulombe. At least three of them should be expected to move prior to Thursday's Major League Baseball trade deadline. There is less certainty regarding Paddack, Vazquez, and France, but the starter has resurrected his value in recent weeks. If there's a team looking to piece together innings and add a starter as a bullpen piece before the postseason, then Paddack represents just that. The Detroit Tigers came calling. It was assumed the front office may entertain moving his $7.5 million this offseason, but he returned and has been healthy. The Detroit Tigers are now add him as an additional starting option. Across 21 starts this season Paddack has posted a 4.95 ERA (4.39 FIP) for the Twins. He has struck out a career-low 6.7 batters per nine innings but is coming off the best start of his season. Against the Los Angeles Dodgers on Wednesday, Paddack went six innings allowing just a single run on four hits while striking out eight. He gave up 11 runs in two starts during July, but he had a 17 game stretch that culminated in a 3.93 ERA, from April through the July 4. That also includes a nine run (eight earned) blowup against the Houston Astros. There's no reason to expect a sizable return for Paddack. He's a middling veteran that present a back-end rotation option. Minnesota gets a minor league prospect in return though, and they clear the final portion of his salary this season. Of course that last bit is exciting to the Pohlad family in conversations to sell the team. Related: Detroit was not the only team looking to acquire Paddack. Jon Heyman reports that the Tampa Bay Rays also were interested in his services. Again, while Paddack has been mediocre at best, there's no reason he can't eat innings down the stretch. It will be interesting to see how the Tigers use him in the postseason if he makes the roster. Paddack was scheduled to pitch for Minnesota on Tuesday against Boston. They will now need another arm to fill that opening. Tigers beat Diamondbacks 7-2 for 4th straight win after 1-12 slump
Kerry Carpenter hit a two-run homer and drove in three runs, Chris Paddack threw six solid innings in his Detroit debut and the Tigers beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 7-2 on Wednesday. The AL Central-leading Tigers have won four straight games, coming off a 1-12 slump that spanned before and after the All-Star Game. Detroit may make moves before the trade deadline on Thursday to bolster its chances of winning the franchise's first World Series since 1984. Arizona has lost five straight, matching its longest losing streak of the season. Paddack (4-10) gave up only one run on three hits with five strikeouts and no walks, two days after the right-hander was acquired in a trade from the Minnesota Twins. Ryne Nelson (6-3) allowed four runs — one earned — on six hits. Kyle Backhus followed and gave up three runs on four hits, retiring only two batters. Carpenter snapped a scoreless tie with a two-out triple in the third inning, scoring Colt Keith after his second single of the game. Jake Rogers hit a two-run home run in a three-run sixth inning, giving the Tigers a six-run cushion that was comfortable against the offensively challenged Diamondbacks. Arizona All-Star third baseman Eugenio Suarez, a potential trade target, was 1 for 4 at the plate. Suarez returned to the lineup after missing Tuesday's game because he was hit on the right hand by a pitch the previous night. Carpenter's two-run homer in the fifth inning gave Detroit a 4-1 lead. Paddack gave up only one run in his second straight start. Arizona RHP Merrill Kelly (9-6, 3.22) is the team's probable pitcher Friday night on the road against the Athletics. Detroit plays at Philadelphia on Friday night with Tigers RHP Jack Flaherty (6-10, 4.51) and Phillies LHP Ranger Suárez (8-4, 2.59) expected to pitch.
