Iconic '90s 'Cult Movie' Actor, 55, Is Nearly Unrecognizable in Podcast Appearance

One of the most iconic "cult movies" from the 1990s is, no doubt, Don't Tell Mom the Babysitter's Dead. The flick premiered in 1991, and it's still a fan-favorite today for anyone who grew up during that time. No one can possibly forget Christina Applegate stealing the show as Sue Ellen Crandell, a 17-year-old who steps up to run the household and take care of her siblings after the elder babysitter their mom left them with suddenly passes away. Another key member of the cast was Keith Coogan, who played Sue Ellen's younger, lazy sibling, Kenny. Most people probably remember his famous line from the film, "The dishes are done, man!" after he took care of cleanup duty by shooting plates with a BB gun. Coogan recently appeared on the Media Path podcast to talk about his unforgettable role. He's now 55 years old, and you'll do a double take before realizing this is actually him! Whoa! He looks totally different, which is expected, but still. It's tough to get 1990s Kenny out of our heads. It's so interesting that he was initially up for the part of Sue Ellen's "Clown Dog" boyfriend but opted out of vying for the role since he'd just played a lovestruck teen in another iconic flick, Adventures in Babysitting, with Elisabeth Shue. Fans who still love the movie today couldn't help but weigh in on Coogan's podcast appearance. One person said, "I watched it today!!!!! OBSESSED ♥️"Another added, "I'm right on top of that, Rose!," citing one of Applegate's most famous lines. Someone else noted, "I saw this in the movies when I was in high school. I didn't like it at the time. I thought it was going to about partying all summer, not about getting a job and being responsible." HA! While the film was remade in 2024, it just can't quite compare to the original. It'll go down in history as a total '90s cult classic that never gets old. 🎬SIGN UP for Parade's Daily newsletter to get the latest pop culture news & celebrity interviews delivered right to your inbox🎬

Conan O'Brien grateful for younger online fanbase

Conan O'Brien believes the internet saved his career. The 62-year-old comic recalled how his stint hosting 'The Tonight Show' - which he took over in June 2009 but left just seven months later when Jay Leno wanted to return to the timeslot - "blew up" and left him fearing he was "in real trouble" - only to realise he had a younger generation of people praising his skills online. Speaking to Christina Applegate and Jamie-Lynn Sigler on their 'MeSsy' podcast, he said: "I've had multiple times in my career where things kind of blew up or went sideways. "I had no regrets about giving ['The Tonight Show'] a shot. And when, for all these complicated reasons, it blew up, I was deeply upset. I thought, 'I'm in real trouble and this could be the end of my career [at 46].' "But lo and behold, this thing called the internet rose up, and I got this huge groundswell of love and appreciation that I didn't expect. "Because [when] you're doing a show like ['Late Night'], day in and day out, for 16 years, it's submarine duty. "You don't get a chance to understand fully that there's a generation of people out there that have been watching, they're younger than me, and they all knew how to use the internet. So, they all got on social media and it was this big thing." The 'Conan O'Brien Needs a Friend' podcaster thinks the fact he gets "very restless" and enjoys new challenges has helped him to maintain a lengthy career on the small screen. He said: "The one thing that saved me is I'm very restless, and I'm willing to change it up. The idea of doing one thing for 35 years in television and getting a gold watch and leaving just sounded awful to me and still does. "Although a gold watch would be great." Conan hosted the Academy Awards this year and his stint was such a hit with viewers and organisers, he has been invited back to helm the ceremony again in 2026. But Conan joked he only agreed to return so he could hear the rest of 'The Brutalist' star Adrien Brody's speech after the Best Actor winner was forced to cut it short after speaking for a record-breaking five minutes and 40 seconds. He quipped: 'The only reason I'm hosting the Oscars next year is that I want to hear Adrien Brody finish his speech.' As well as Conan, executive producers Raj Kapoor and Katy Mullan will be involved for a third time, and Jeff Ross and Mike Sweeney will produce once again. Academy CEO Bill Kramer and outcoming president Janet Yang said in a statement: 'We are thrilled to bring back Conan, Raj, Katy, Jeff and Mike for the 98th Oscar. "This year, they produced a hugely entertaining and visually stunning show that celebrated our nominees and the global film community in the most beautiful and impactful way. "Conan was the perfect host — skillfully guiding us through the evening with humour, warmth and reverence. It is an honour to be working with them again.'

Christina Applegate reveals she doesn't 'leave the house anymore' in heartbreaking health update

Christina Applegate has revealed she 'doesn't leave the house anymore' in a heartbreaking new health update. The 53-year-old Anchorman actress has been battling multiple sclerosis (MS) - a chronic, autoimmune disease that affects the central nervous system, since 2021. She opened up on Tuesday on how she is doing currently during an appearance on Conan O'Brien's show Conan O'Brien Needs a Friend, alongside her podcast co-host Jamie-Lynn Sigler. Getting emotional, Christina quipped: 'I don't really leave the house anymore. If people saw what my life was like on the daily, they wouldn't they wouldn't be able to do it. Because I can sometimes not do it. It's really, really hard. 'The first thing that I hear from people is how did you get it? Meaning I must have done something wrong in my life to have this disease, I did it to myself. It's like I had breast cancer as well so, oh you must have done something.' She continued: 'That stigma, I'm used to it now but it was so hard to swallow for a while because why the f*** would you think that I would do something to have this, because this is the worst thing I've ever had in my life. 'It's the worst thing I've ever gone through.' The actress explained that on a bad day, 'to go to the bathroom is like walking on needles and hot lava so I haven't really been able to get out of my bed today'. She also lifted the lid on the symptoms she experienced, including numbness in her toes and losing her balance. 'Eventually over months it went from my toes to my ankles to from my knees down. Selma Blair said can you please go to the neurogolist and I was like there's no way that both of us from the same movie have MS.' Christina added: 'I was losing balance, but the pain was extraordinary. And when I say numb, it's numb, but it hurts.' Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a condition that affects the brain and spinal cord. It cannot currently be cured, but treatment can often help manage it. Christina has previously revealed the shocking amount of times that she has been rushed to the hospital for an illness related to her multiple sclerosis. On her MeSsy Podcast, she answered a fan question about her battle as she said: 'For three years, since I was diagnosed, I've been in the hospital upwards of 30 times from throwing up and diarrhea and pain. 'That is unimaginable, OK? They've done every test known to man on me, put so much radiation into my body from CT scans to everything else.' Christina did reveal some positive news, however, as she said that she believes that she had figured out what the issue is within the last month. As the fan asked about the vomiting and diarrhea from their battle with MS, the Married With Children actress replied: 'Now, maybe this isn't what's happening, but I'm just going to tell you this. Talk to your doctor about motility issues, okay. 'Because one of the things with MS is that it slows down our organs, you know, not like completely, but there is a slowing of the function of your organs. 'I have noticed that — and I'm going to be really honest — if I have to poop, I puke.' Christina also said that she was going to get a colonoscopy and said she brought the fan's email to show the doctor. She said: 'My neuro doesn't — God bless her — says that's not an MS thing. 'So, I'm sorry, there's got to be a correlation here, and I'm not a doctor. I'm not giving medical advice. I'm just saying, just think about that, OK? Because I'm in the middle of the same exact situation, and it f***ing sucks, and it's scary.' Christina joked that her 'favorite part' of her MS battle is having diarrhea and vomiting simultaneously. She said: ''Always have a little trash can next to your toilet. Because you can do both without it being messy. I had one yesterday.' Christina also noticed the first signs of MS after 'falling' on her series Dead To Me. The actress recalled filming the pilot episode of the drama - which aired from 2019 to 2022 - which included a scene where her character Jen Harding was running across a field. During an episode of her own 'MeSsy' podcast with Sigler, she told Dead To Me director Liz Feldman: 'I remember falling that day. Hi, first sign of MS! So, not to bring everybody down, but there I was.' Liz recalled: 'I remember you losing your balance when we were shooting the pilot a couple of times. It was very hard to figure it out because, you know, I remember one time, it was really late at night. 'We'd been shooting probably 14 or 15 hours … It seemed completely reasonable that anybody would be collapsing.' Christina confirmed: 'It was MS.' The new podcast interview comes just after Christina revealed last month that her father Robert 'Bobby' Applegate has died at the age of 82. She broke down in tears when she shared the heartbreaking news on her podcast. She told guest JoAnna Garcia Swisher that she was crying because her father passed away about a week before they were recording their podcast session. Christina added that this was the first time she had shed tears over the passing of her dad because she had held it in. 'We knew he was going to die. Is that an excuse for not feeling?' she asked. 'Because you kind of know that someone's going to go, and you've said your goodbyes,' added the longtime actress.
