Christchurch woman drowned in spa pool after night of drinking at a party
Coroner Alexandra Cunninghame suppresssed the identities of the woman who died and her husband. Photo: The Press / Joanne Naish A Christchurch woman accidentally drowned in her spa pool after returning home from a night of drinking at a Christmas party, a coroner has found. The woman, aged in her 70s, was found in the pool by her husband the morning after the party in 2021, although their identities were suppressed by coroner Alexandra Cunninghame, along with the reasons why. The man left the party at about 9.45pm and went straight to bed, with his dog, when he got home, while his wife and other colleagues continued on. A colleague told the coroner the woman was "starting to surpass being moderately intoxicated", slurring her words and unable to hold a conversation by 1am. An Uber was ordered for her, which arrived at 2.24am. The driver thought the woman was very intoxicated and did not want to take her home, but they were assured by the woman's colleague that she would be okay, the coroner said. "When the Uber arrived outside [her] home, she asked the driver where they were. She took a long time to exit the vehicle," Cunninghame said. The woman's husband woke at 3.45am and noticed the dog was gone. "He searched for it in the house, and then heard it in the backyard. He saw that the door that led to the backyard from the house was ajar. He let the dog inside, and went back to sleep," the coroner said. "At 7:23am, he woke up. [His wife] was not in their room, and so he rang her mobile phone. There was no answer." He went downstairs and found his wife in the pool. She was not breathing, so he called 111. When paramedics arrived, they confirmed his wife was dead. Coroner Cunninghame did not make recommendations relating to the death because the risk of spa pools in the context of alcohol use had already been the subject of findings by other coroners. "The general risk of spa pool use, particularly when alcohol has been consumed, has been brought to public attention by way of earlier findings and I do not consider it necessary to make any comments or recommendations in this case," she said.

East Moline Police pay respects to officer killed in the line of duty in 1969
On this day in 1969, East Moline Officer Richard Morton Jr. lost his life in the line of duty. Every year, the East Moline Police Department remembers the fallen officer and the tragedy that took his life May 25, 1969, according to a Facebook post. On that day, officers responded to a the 1300 block of 10th Avenue for a 'routine' trouble call. Neighbors called and told police that Daniel Hougas was outside with a rifle threatening to shoot neighbor children who reportedly were playing on his lawn. Morton and Officer Robert Butcher arrived and immediately seized the 'rifle,' which turned out to be a BB gun, from Hougas, the post says. According to the post, Senior Officer Morton directed Butcher to transport Hougas to the police department. At that time, Hougas pulled away from officers, took a few steps, and drew a .32 caliber revolver from his pocket. Hougas began firing at the officers, and reportedly fired five shots. A bullet struck Morton in the chest, the post says. 'Despite being injured, Officer Richard Morton Jr. was able to fire two rounds at the suspect. Officer Robert Butcher and Officer Richard Morton Jr. returned fire' and Hougas was killed, the Facebook post says. Morton died several hours later while undergoing surgery at Illini Hospital in Silvis. The Facebook post concludes: 'Every year at this time we pay our respects and memorialize Officer Richard Morton Jr. who paid the ultimate sacrifice while faithfully serving the community in East Moline. This year marks 56 years. Thank you for your service, Officer Richard Morton Jr. You will never be forgotten!' On December 19, 2007, retired East Moline Police Department Officer Bob Butcher was presented an award for his bravery that day, according to the City of East Moline website. The award was given to Butcher by the Quad City Council of Police Chiefs. In this photo Butcher is shown with Chief Moreno at the Annual East Moline Police Department Christmas Party on December 20, 2007, when Butcher was once again recognized for the award. BREAKING NEWS Bill Belichick's ex Linda Holliday angrily confronted Jordon Hudson and threatened her friend, shock report claims
Bill Belichick 's ex-girlfriend Linda Holliday angrily confronted Jordon Hudson and threatened her friend while they were at a Christmas party in Nantucket, TMZ has reported. According to an incident report filed by an employee at the party's venue, Dreamland, Holliday was enraged by Hudson's presence at the December 6 event. Holliday's twin daughters - Ashley and Kat Hess - were DJing at the party. Belichick, 73, and Holliday, 61, broke up in September 2023 after 16 years together. He met Hudson on a flight from Boston to Florida in 2021. The incident report says Holliday thought Hudson being there was 'inappropriate, since the event was widely advertised as a party headlined by her daughters.' The report claims that at 9:30pm, Holliday approached the member of staff and asked her to remove Hudson, 24, from the party. While on the phone with the venue's executive director to discuss removing Hudson, staff spotted Holliday and friend Elin Hilderbrand - believed to be the New York Times bestselling author - approach Hudson on the dance floor with 'threatening body language and escalating aggression'. But as the employee approached the dance floor, Holliday and her friends - which also included Heather Thorpe - decided to back away. 'I asked Ms. Hudson if she thought it was a good idea to be there considering the clear animosity the above individuals felt towards her,' the employee wrote in the report. 'She defended herself by saying she'd done nothing wrong, and it was her first time attending Christmas Stroll and wanted to attend the "big party" going on that night, which happened to be the one featuring the Hess Twins.' 'She said she was not looking to cause any problems, but just wanted to go out and have fun with her friend.' Hudson was attending the event with Melissa Sapini, last year's winner of the Miss Massachusetts beauty pageant. When realizing there were only a few minutes left of the party, Hudson is said to have agreed to leave if the employee accompanied them to the exit. As they waited by the exit, Hudson supposedly then told the employee that Holliday threatened Sapini during the clash on the dance floor. It was claimed Holliday told Hudson's friend that if she 'valued her current title, she should think twice about who her friends are' and that she 'had many powerful friends in the pageant organization.' The report says Sapini didn't speak but broke down in tears in the room and was 'wiping her eyes frequently'. After leaving Hudson and Sapini by the exit, the employee returned to find Holliday who said: 'If this didn't involve my girls, I don't think this would have bothered me as much, but because it did the "momma bear" in me came out.' Dreamland told TMZ that, despite the tense altercation, police and security were never involved. News of the tense encounter comes a day after Page Six reported that Hudson has been 'iced out' by the socialites of Nantucket, who are staying fiercely loyal to Holliday. Hudson has supposedly been trying to work her way into the social and charity scenes on the exclusive island that sits just off the coast in Massachusetts. Belichick's ex is a major player in those circles and, as a result, locals are shunning Hudson's attempts to muscle in. 'She's trying to claim her stake in the social circle. That is Linda's thing,' a source said. Another commented: 'People on Nantucket are pretty sophisticated. You could be sitting at Galley Beach restaurant and if [Hudson] walked in, 90 per cent of the place would roll their eyes. No one is going to be welcoming her with open arms. 'It's cliquey here. Very cliquey. You have the group that picks two or three charities, they're really into that and focused. 'They're not inviting people they don't think are going to be a good fit for them,' they continued. 'People are turned off by her. She's kind of young - who knows what happened when Linda was still [dating Belichick]. Did Jordan come into the picture?' The socialites of Nantucket are staying loyal to Holliday, Page Six reported on Monday Belichick pictured alongside Hudson leaving the Miss Maine pageant on Sunday Hudson has come under fire in recent weeks over her relationship with the legendary NFL coach, 73, who recently took over the UNC Tar Heels. There have been a string of damaging reports about her influence over Belichick, while a number of big names have lined up to slam the couple. The criticism has snowballed ever since Belichick's infamous interview with CBS, when Hudson - sitting off-camera - interrupted to shut down questions about how they met. It was recently claimed that the coach's loved ones are 'digging into' his girlfriend amid fears she could tear down 'everything he's built'.

EDEN CONFIDENTIAL: Celebrated actress reveals 'furious' row at palace party given by King Charles and Queen Camilla
Buckingham Palace has not seen anything like it since Lady Susan Hussey's unfortunate contretemps with campaigner Ngozi Fulani in 2022. I hear that Dame Sheila Hancock got involved in a heated argument during a reception at the palace. So furious did the confrontation become that a fellow party-goer had to intervene to calm down the Olivier Award-winning actress. The row is thought to have taken place at a party for guests who had attended the Christmas carol service at Westminster Abbey last December organised by the Princess of Wales. 'I was at a Christmas party given by the King and Queen when I inappropriately got into a furious political argument with someone important,' confirms Dame Sheila. The widow of late Inspector Morse star John Thaw does not disclose the identity of the 'important' fellow guest or the cause of their dispute. However, she confirms that a bystander intervened to defuse the situation. 'Trying to keep the peace was a good-looking gentleman who stayed with me when my angry antagonist stalked off,' she writes in Prospect magazine. Dame Sheila's mood then worsened when she spotted Justin Welby, who had resigned as Archbishop of Canterbury a few weeks earlier. 'To my horror, I could see that Justin Welby – who the day before had made an unforgivably light-hearted speech in the House of Lords about his crass inadequacy in dealing with abuse in the Church – was about to approach me,' she says. 'Fearful of irretrievably blotting my royal copy book with a second confrontation, I made my poor new friend block the way between me and the holy man.' The actress, 92, is no stranger to hostile encounters. In 2013, her co-star in a West End show, Keeley Hawes, dropped out of the production after reportedly clashing repeatedly with Dame Sheila. One source described it in The Mail on Sunday as a 'battle between two divas', with one particularly heated argument allegedly leading to an 'arm-grabbing' incident. Lady Susan Hussey, a loyal aide of the late Queen Elizabeth, was forced to step down from her royal duties after she inadvertently offended domestic abuse campaigner Ngozi Fulani at a Buckingham Palace reception.
