Law enforcement memorial held in Jackson
JACKSON, Mich. (WLNS) — Wednesday, police held their annual law enforcement memorial at Horace Blackman Park in Jackson, spotlighting the lives lost in the line of duty. 6 News spoke to officers about how important the event was for them and the families of those who made the ultimate sacrifice.
'We have a lot of things going on, the salute, the roll call of heroes,' says Jackson Police Chief Christopher Simpson. 'As you can see, the bagpiper, the memorial songs, the prayers, Taps, the gun salute, all of the law enforcement community, our governmental leaders out here. But, the roll call of heroes is the reason why we're here.'
It was a day of remembrance for fallen heroes who have shaped and protected the community. Simpson says the memorial was not to mourn, but to honor those who gave their lives for the safety of the community.
'Know that we still think about them,' says Simpson. 'We still honor them and we still, you know, are excited about Jackson honoring them more or less paying respect to their loved ones, who've given the ultimate sacrifice.'
Simpson says community support during times like these is paramount.
'We think that is very important. We saw the families during the roll call of heroes,' says Simpson. 'It is important that they come out and know that we still think about them. We still honor them, and we still, you know, are excited about Jackson honoring them.'
Simpson says Wednesday's event is a reflection of National Police Week, held next week, May 11–17.
