Schumer warns of rise in antisemitism
WASHINGTON (NEXSTAR) – The highest-ranking Jewish lawmaker in America issued a stark warning about antisemitism after the attack on pro-Israeli demonstrators over the weekend. Senator Chuck Schumer warned people are blaming Jews for the actions of the Israeli government and that could lead to further violence. Investigators say Mohamed Soliman spent a year planning his attack using an improvised flamethrower and throwing Molotov cocktails at a pro-Israeli group over the weekend. 'He will be held accountable to the fullest extent of the law,' said White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt. Soliman faces attempted murder and hate crime charges in federal and state courts. Police identified 12 people wounded between 52-88 years old, including a Holocaust survivor. 'The president has made it very clear, as he said in his statement yesterday, that yes these antisemitic acts of violence do qualify as terrorism,' said Leavitt. A week before the attack in Boulder a pro-Palestinian attacker shot and killed two Israeli embassy staffers outside a Jewish museum in Washington, D.C. Lawmakers say they've seen more antisemitism leading to more violence against Jewish people. 'We are witnessing, in real time, the resurgence of blame against the Jewish people,' said Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.). Schumer, the highest ranking Jewish elected official, says people are blaming all Jewish people for the actions of the Israeli government during its war in Gaza. The Anti-Defamation League says antisemitic attacks in 2024 were up 344% from five years ago. 'I fear history is beginning to whisper its warnings once again,' said Schumer. Schumer says all Americans should stand up against antisemitism because he fears continued violence against Jewish people. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Steve Witkoff must testify about 'secret side deal' with Iran, top Democrat says
A leading US senator on Tuesday said special Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff must appear before Congress to face questions about whether the Trump administration is trying to cut a 'secret side deal' with Iran. Mr Witkoff, Secretary of State Marco Rubio and President Donald Trump have repeatedly said Iran will not be allowed to enrich any uranium as part of continuing nuclear talks, including for civilian purposes. But reports by The New York Times and Axios contradict this. They say Washington and Tehran are working on a solution in which Iran could enrich uranium at low levels for civilian use until the US and other nations formulate a larger plan that stops its progress towards a nuclear bomb. 'Steve Witkoff must testify before Congress,' Senator Chuck Schumer, the top Democrat in the Senate, said on X. 'Is there a secret side deal that will allow Iran to continue enriching uranium and empowers Iran's nefarious activity or not?' Whether Mr Witkoff testifies is up to Republicans, who control the US Senate and House of Representatives. The reports also say the proposal suggests the formation of a regional consortium to produce nuclear power, which could include Saudi Arabia and other nations. In a separate video message, Mr Schumer accused Mr Trump of 'folding' to Iran's demands. 'What kind of bull is this? You're going to sound tough in public and then have a secret side eal that let's Iran get away with everything. That's outrageous.' The purported agreement would allow for Iran and the US to find a way past red lines both countries have drawn. Mr Trump has said Iran will not be allowed to enrich 'any' uranium, while Iran has said that its ability to enrich uranium is non-negotiable. When asked about a side deal, State Department spokeswoman Tammy Bruce declined to comment on any negotiations. 'What I can say, though, of course, is that the maximum-pressure campaign on Iran remains in full force,' she told reporters. The Wall Street Journal reported on Sunday that a directive came down last week from White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt to pause all new sanctions activity towards Iran.

Alstom opens new passenger rail car manufacturing plant in New York
This story was originally published on Smart Cities Dive. To receive daily news and insights, subscribe to our free daily Smart Cities Dive newsletter. Alstom, a global supplier of rail vehicles, locomotives and related infrastructure, opened a $75 million manufacturing facility Monday in Hornell, New York, adding to its existing production site. The 135,000 square foot plant will begin producing 200 multilevel commuter rail cars for Metra, Chicago's commuter rail system. The fourth plant on the site will manufacture stainless steel car body shells for passenger rail vehicles, bringing production back from Brazil. Buoyed by growth in its Americas region, Alstom's plant expansion enables it to reshore production of car body shells to the U.S. That could be essential for the company to win contracts that must comply with the Buy America Act, which requires that at least 70% of each rail car be made in the U.S. and that final assembly must take place in the U.S. Some of Alstom's current projects include multilevel rail cars for New Jersey Transit, an automated people mover system at Los Angeles International Airport and Amtrak's new Acela train sets for the Northeast Corridor. The new facility will create 258 jobs and retain 390 existing jobs, Alstom said in a news release. 'These are generational, family-sustaining union careers that benefit the entire community,' International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers President Brian Bryant said in a statement. Alstom benefitted from federal, state and local grants, job and tax credit programs toward the new plant. 'I was proud to secure $3.4 million in federal funding to put Alstom on the fast track to expand and house this new manufacturing facility,' Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., said in a statement. The high-tech facility includes automated welding robots to make precision welds for assemblies up to 80 feet long. Alstom says that will improve quality and lower costs for transit authority customers. 'When we invest in American manufacturing, we create good jobs that have a ripple effect across the entire region,' Michael Keroullé, president of Alstom Americas, said in a statement. 'Plant 4 upholds our long-standing commitment to making trains in America.' Jesse Watters Boasts He Saw ‘Jacked' GOP Senator Lifting in the Gym
Fox News host Jesse Watters dished out some odd advice Monday for Democratic men like Sen. Chuck Schumer: don't have a woman's physique. How he knows this: he's seen a top Republican somewhat disrobed. On The Five, where Watters has been known to discuss what he thinks is masculine and what isn't, he claimed that an answer to Democratic woes at the ballot box lies at the gym. 'I was at a resort a little while back and I saw [Senate Majority Leader John] Thune at the gym. The man is jacked and the guy's in great shape, and he lifts hard, too,' he admired of the 64-year-old. 'You look at Schumer—and he's built like a woman. Men do not want to be led by the party of women. Men want to be led by other men,' said Watters, who last summer knocked Kamala Harris as a 'frightened woman.' 'Working out actually makes you more masculine. It increases your testosterone... It makes you more competitive, happier, healthier, all that stuff. Being around other guys is also good for you,' Watters went on. 'And women are more attracted to guys that lift, and that's just scientifically proven.' In response to a column arguing that joining gyms can bring about favorable political outcomes for Democrats, Watters said, 'You can't campaign at the gym; Democrats have to go into the gym. They have to work out." 'So,' he continued, 'Democrats need to become men, and then they can persuade men. But they have to lift first. I'm serious.' Watters then incorporated into his pitch a quotation from, of all people, poet Maya Angelou. 'People will forget what you said. People will forget what you did. But people will never forget how you made them feel,' he said. 'People don't like how they feel around Democrats because Democrats don't like the way they feel,' Watters concluded. 'And if they lifted, they would feel better, and then everyone around them would feel better.' In his eponymous primetime show later Wednesday night, Watters reiterated his point. 'Don't hand out fliers outside of Equinox,' he told Democrats. 'Go inside and lift.' One way Democratic donors and strategists have been working to improve their lot with young men—mainly online—is though a $20 million effort called 'Speaking with American Men: A Strategic Plan,' which aims to 'study the syntax, language and content that gains attention and virality in these spaces.' 'Above all,' it says, 'we must shift from a moralizing tone.'

FEMA Head Reportedly Didn't Know US Has A Hurricane Season
David Richardson, the acting head of the Federal Emergency Management Agency, told staffers he was unaware that the U.S. had a hurricane season, according to multiple reports, comments which could further raise concerns about the agency's preparedness in tackling natural disasters after the Trump administration's removal of its previous head. According to Reuters, which first reported the matter, the remarks caused confusion among FEMA staffers on whether Richardson was joking or was being serious. Citing three unnamed sources, the report added Richardson's comments reignited concerns about the Trump administration appointee's lack of experience with disaster responses. A spokesperson for the agency told various outlets that the comments were made as a joke and 'FEMA is laser focused on disaster response and protecting the American people.' Richardson held an all-hands meeting at the agency on Monday, where he said he would not be issuing a new disaster management plan for this year to avoid getting ahead of the Trump administration's FEMA Review Council. According to the New York Times, staffers have been advised to respond to hurricanes this year the same way they did in 2024's hurricane season, but this has raised concerns within the agency as it will be working with reduced staff. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., tweeted a screenshot of the Reuters report on his X account and wrote: 'And I'm unaware of why he hasn't been fired yet.' Rep. Bennie Thompson, D-Miss., the seniormost Democrat on the House Homeland Security Committee, told Reuters: 'Suffice to say, disaster response is no joke. If you don't know what or when hurricane season is, you're not qualified to run FEMA. Get someone knowledgeable in there.'
