‘Lilo & Stitch' passes ‘Sinners' to become 2nd highest grossing film of 2025

'Lilo & Stich' and 'Mission: Impossible—The Final Reckoning' dominated the box office charts again after fueling a record-breaking Memorial Day weekend. Theaters in the U.S. and Canada had several new films to offer this weekend as well, including Sony's family friendly 'Karate Kid: Legends' and the A24 horror movie 'Bring Her Back. ' According to studio estimates Sunday, it added up to a robust $149 million post-holiday weekend that's up over 120% from the same timeframe last year. Disney's live-action hybrid 'Lilo & Stitch' took first place again with $63 million from 4,410 locations in North America. It was enough to pass 'Sinners' to become the second-highest grossing movie of the year with $280.1 million in domestic ticket sales. Globally, its running total is $610.8 million. 'Sinners,' meanwhile, is still going strong in its seventh weekend with another $5.2 million, bumping it to $267.1 million domestically and $350.1 million globally. The eighth 'Mission: Impossible' movie also repeated in second place, with $27.3 million from 3,861 locations. As with 'Lilo & Stitch,' that's down 57% from its opening. With $122.6 million in domestic tickets sold, it's performing in line with the two previous installments. But with a reported production budget of $400 million, profitability is a ways off. Internationally, it added $76.1 million (including $25.2 million from China where it just opened), bringing its global total to $353.8 million. 'This is the year of longterm playability,' said Paul Dergarabedian, Comscore's senior media analyst. 'The currency of word of mouth and the strong hold is more important than opening weekend dollars.' Leading the newcomers was Sony's 'Karate Kid: Legends,' with an estimated $21 million from 3,809 locations. The movie brings Jackie Chan and Ralph Macchio together to train a new kid, the kung fu prodigy Li Fong (Ben Wang). Chan starred in a 2010 reboot of the 1984 original, while Macchio has found a new generation of fans in the series 'Cobra Kai,' which just concluded a six-season run. Reviews might have been mixed, but opening weekend audiences gave the PG-13 rated film a strong A- CinemaScore and 4.5 stars on PostTrak. It also only cost a reported $45 million to produce and has several weeks until a new family-friendly film arrives. 'Karate Kid: Legends' opened earlier internationally and has a worldwide total of $47 million. Fourth place went 'Final Destination: Bloodlines,' which earned $10.8 million in its third weekend. The movie is the highest-grossing in the franchise, not accounting for inflation, with $229.3 million globally. The weekend's other big newcomer, 'Bring Her Back' rounded out the top five with $7.1 million from 2,449 screens. Starring Sally Hawkins as a foster mother with some disturbing plans, the film is the sophomore feature of twin filmmakers Danny and Michael Philippou, who made the 2023 horror breakout 'Talk to Me.' It earned a rare-for-horror B+ CinemaScore and is essentially the only new film in the genre until '28 Years Later' opens on June 20. A new Wes Anderson movie, 'The Phoenician Scheme,' also debuted in New York and Los Angeles this weekend, where it made $270,000. It expands nationwide next weekend. The summer box office forecast remains promising, though there's a long way to go to get to the $4 billion target (a pre-pandemic norm that only the 'Barbenheimer' summer has surpassed). The month of May is expected to close out with $973 million – up 75% from May 2024, according to data from Comscore. With final domestic figures being released Monday, this list factors in the estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Comscore: 1. 'Lilo & Stitch,' $63 million. 2. 'Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning,' $27.3 million. 3. 'Karate Kid: Legends,' 21 million. 4. 'Final Destination: Bloodlines,' $10.8 million. 5. 'Bring Her Back,' $7.1 million. 6. 'Sinners,' $5.2 million. 7. 'Thunderbolts,' $4.8 million. 8. 'Friendship,' $2.6 million. 9. 'The Last Rodeo,' $2.1 million. 10. 'j-hope Tour 'HOPE ON THE STAGE' in JAPAN: LIVE VIEWING,' $939,173.

Ryan Coogler's "Sinners" Gets Digital and Blu-ray Release Date

Yara Sameh Ryan Coogler's latest masterpiece, "Sinners", will hit streaming platforms and VOD on June 3. The vampire thriller, which premiered in theaters last month, features Michael B. Jordan as twin brothers Smoke and Stack, who return to their Mississippi hometown to start over. However, they soon learn that an even greater evil is waiting for them. Hailee Steinfeld and Wunmi Mosaku also feature. Since its release in theaters, "Sinners" has consistently dominated at the box office, alongside Marvel's "Thunderbolts*" and "Final Destination: Bloodlines". "Sinners" became an instant critical success. It opened to $48 million domestically, and has since raked in $246.4 million at the domestic box office and $76.4 million internationally. Now, as it approaches a nearly two-month run, the website When To Stream reports that Sinners will be out on. It's currently available for pre-order on Amazon's Prime Video, and is also expected to be available on AppleTV, Fandango at Home, and YouTube. It will be followed by Steelbook, 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, and DVD editions on July 8. Ahead of its release, it had already earned a rare Rotten Tomatoes critics score of 99 percent. It currently sits at a critics' score of 97 percent on Rotten Tomatoes , followed by a 96 percent audience score. Shortly after its debut, it made history as the first-ever horror film to receive an A rating on CinemaScore . For 47 years, CinemaScore has measured a film's appeal by polling early reactions, and never before has a horror film earned a rating higher than an A-. Rotten Tomatoes called it 'one of the best films of the year.' ScreenRant reports that it's only $31 million away from making it on the top 10 list of the highest-grossing R-rated films ever domestically. It's currently 12th on the list, just below "The Hangover Part II". 2009's "The Hangover" currently sits at the No. 10 spot, with an estimated $277 million at the domestic box office. read more New Tourism Route To Launch in Old Cairo Ahmed El Sakka-Led Play 'Sayidati Al Jamila' to Be Staged in KSA on Dec. 6 Mandy Moore Joins Season 2 of "Dr. Death" Anthology Series Don't Miss These Movies at 44th Cairo Int'l Film Festival Today Amr Diab to Headline KSA's MDLBEAST Soundstorm 2022 Festival Arts & Culture Mai Omar Stuns in Latest Instagram Photos Arts & Culture "The Flash" to End with Season 9 Arts & Culture Ministry of Culture Organizes four day Children's Film Festival Arts & Culture Canadian PM wishes Muslims Eid-al-Adha News Egypt confirms denial of airspace access to US B-52 bombers News Ayat Khaddoura's Final Video Captures Bombardment of Beit Lahia News Australia Fines Telegram $600,000 Over Terrorism, Child Abuse Content Arts & Culture Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban's $4.7M LA Home Burglarized Sports Former Al Zamalek Player Ibrahim Shika Passes away after Long Battle with Cancer Sports Neymar Announced for Brazil's Preliminary List for 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers News Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouly Inaugurates Two Indian Companies Arts & Culture New Archaeological Discovery from 26th Dynasty Uncovered in Karnak Temple Business Fear & Greed Index Plummets to Lowest Level Ever Recorded amid Global Trade War Arts & Culture Zahi Hawass: Claims of Columns Beneath the Pyramid of Khafre Are Lies

Marvel's 'Thunderbolt' storms box office with £60m debut – but but can the movie rescue a fading franchise?

Marvel's 'Thunderbolts' has tops box office but doubts linger over whether the movie has enough magic to inject new life into the franchise Marvel Studios' latest superhero entry 'Thunderbolts' has powered to the top of the US box office with a £60 million ($76 million) opening weekend – a solid start, but still short of the fireworks once expected from the comic book giant. The antihero team-up film, led by Florence Pugh, David Harbour and Sebastian Stan, kicked off the summer movie season by hitting No.1, studio estimates confirmed Sunday. But the numbers fall just shy of Marvel's blockbuster glory days. ‌ Fans and insiders alike had hoped 'Thunderbolts' would help return Marvel to form following a string of underwhelming releases. ‌ But its debut performance echoes 2021's 'Eternals' ($71 million) and 2018's 'Ant-Man and the Wasp' ($75 million), rather than mega-hits like 'Avengers: Endgame.' That said, the film has earned praise. Unlike recent Marvel outings, 'Thunderbolts' scored a strong 88% 'fresh' rating on Rotten Tomatoes and earned an impressive 'A-' from CinemaScore, indicating audiences are enjoying it. 'This is a great reset,' said Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst for Comscore. 'They're hitting the reset with 'Thunderbolts.' The great reviews and the word-of-mouth should hold it (in) good stead.' Directed by Jake Schreier, the movie teases Marvel's next chapter with a nod to the upcoming 'The Fantastic Four: First Steps,' due out July 25. Marvel shelled out about $180 million to produce the film, which added another $86.1 million in overseas ticket sales. ‌ Still, competition at the box office proved tough. Ryan Coogler's vampire drama 'Sinners,' which had ruled cinemas for the past two weeks, pulled in another $33 million in its third weekend – just a 28% drop. The 1932-set thriller, starring Michael B. Jordan in a dual role as bootlegging brothers, has now grossed nearly $180 million domestically and over $236 million globally. Meanwhile, Warner Bros. claimed third spot with its hit 'A Minecraft Movie.' The video game adaptation brought in $13.7 million over the weekend and has now racked up £698 million ($873.4 million) worldwide. The studio even added 'Block Party Edition' screenings to keep the hype alive, complete with sing-alongs and 'meme-along' sessions for TikTok-hungry fans. ‌ One of the most talked-about releases was 'Rust,' which finally arrived in theatres more than three years after cinematographer Halyna Hutchins was tragically killed on set. The Alec Baldwin western grossed around $25,000 across 115 cinemas, according to estimates, though no official box office figures were released. The film's release follows a legal saga: Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, the armorer, was sentenced to prison for involuntary manslaughter, while first assistant director David Halls received probation after a no-contest plea. ‌ Charges against Baldwin were dismissed twice, in 2023 and again in 2024. As part of a wrongful death settlement, Hutchins' husband Matt Hutchins became an executive producer on the film. Elsewhere, 'The Surfer,' starring Nicolas Cage, made a modest splash with £540,000 ($674,560) from 884 cinemas. Here's the full rundown of the weekend's Top 10 films at the North American box office: 'Thunderbolts' – $76 million 'Sinners' – $33 million 'A Minecraft Movie' – $13.7 million 'The Accountant 2' – $9.5 million 'Until Dawn' – $3.8 million 'The Amateur' – $1.8 million 'The King of Kings' – $1.7 million 'Warfare' – $1.3 million 'Hit: The Third Case' – $869,667 'The Surfer' – $674,560

Ryan Coogler and Michael B. Jordan are the moviemaking duo we didn't know we needed

After more than a decade directing films, Ryan Coogler's projects have one thing in common - actor Michael B. Jordan. From his writing/directorial debut 'Fruitvale Station' in 2013 to the recently released 'Sinners,' Coogler has had Jordan starring in all his films. It's a professional partnership reminiscent of other directors and artists, like Martin Scorsese and Robert De Niro or David Lynch and Kyle MacLachlan. Coogler and Jordan recently talked about their longstanding work-relationship during a recent appearance on 'The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.' 'He's an incredible performer and a consummate professional and when you're filmmaking, bro, chemistry is important,' Coogler said of Jordan. 'I'm sure you've worked with a lot of your crew for a long time. I see my army from Philly, [band ]The Roots [who serve as the house band on Fallon's late night show] here, if you find a connection, you gotta keep that in an industry like ours.' 'If it ain't broke, don't fix it,' Jordan added. 'Sometimes we don't even really need to talk too much because I kind of know exactly what he's looking for, or what he needs.' According to Coogler, he and Jordan 'both feel it.' 'I'm always observing him and seeing what is he anticipating, how can I make his job, make his day easier?' Jordan said. 'We've got a crazy shorthand.' In addition to the two aforementioned films, Coogler wrote for and directed Jordan in 'Creed' (2015), 'Black Panther' (2018) and 'Black Panther: Wakanda Forever' (2022). 'Sinners' has been winning raves from audiences and critics. Warner Bros., the studio behind 'Sinners,' announced on Sunday that the horror film was the first in the genre to earn an A CinemaScore in more than 35 years. According to its site, the marketing research company CinemaScore's movie grades are based on polling of a 'robust sampling of opening night moviegoers.' Warner Bros. and CNN are both part of Warner Bros. Discovery. The film also raked it in at the box office. It had a global opening weekend of $61 million, surpassing initial estimates and topping 'A Minecraft Movie,' which grossed $41.3 million domestically in its third weekend in theaters. 'Sinners' is also attracting loyalty. After Variety posted on X that 'profitability remains a ways away' for 'Sinners,' along with a link to an article about it, there was some backlash. 'In what universe does a 60 million dollar opening for an original studio movie warrant this headline?' actor and director Ben Stiller wrote on X. After one of his followers responded that '60 mill seems like a killer opening weekend,' Stiller responded, 'It is.'
