Tangshan Sanyou opens facility to drive circular MMCF innovation

Tangshan Sanyou's new facility includes a pilot line with the capacity to process 10 tonnes (t), which will focus on testing a solvent-based method that transforms waste cotton textiles into viscose fibres. These fibres are intended for incorporation into the company's recycled MMCF product, ReVisco. The establishment of this test facility is the latest effort by Tangshan Sanyou to embed Next Generation (Next Gen) fibre technologies into its MMCF product range. Since 2018, the company has been experimenting with various recycled textile materials to facilitate a shift towards circular, more sustainable and lower-impact fibre production. Tangshan Sanyou became the first conventional MMCF producer to integrate Circulose recycled cotton pulp at a 30% blend into its ReVisco viscose staple fibre line. The initiative also encompasses the creation of black viscose and explorations into other colour options. The company also renewed its collaboration with Circulose following changes in ownership as the partner aims to restart operations at its Swedish mill. As part of its Next Gen work, Tangshan Sanyou used 20% of Södra's OnceMore recycled cotton pulp blend into ReVisco modal and viscose fibres. It also announced plans to expand ReVisco production capacity to 200,000t annually depending on market demand, developing ReVisco lyocell from recycled textile materials and successfully producing viscose fibre using alternative raw materials such as hemp and Juncao. Based in Hebei Province, China, Tangshan Sanyou has an annual production capacity of 808,000t. Since 2016, the company has been a partner of Canopy and received a Dark Green Shirt in Canopy's 2024 Hot Button Report and is recognised as posing no known risk of sourcing from ancient or endangered forests. Canopy founder and executive director Nicole Rycroft said: 'As one of the world's largest MMCF producers, Tangshan Sanyou's investments in circularity and reducing reliance on forest-based inputs are critically important. The company has demonstrated consistent leadership since the early days of Next Gen innovation, and this new testing line is a welcome addition to the sector's broader transition to commercial-scale Next Gen MMCF for global markets.' Last month, Tangshan Sanyou Chemical Fiber forged a strategic alliance with recycled pulp producer Circulose to support the advancement and widespread adoption of Circulose while also elevating Tangshan Sanyou's global presence. Yibin Grace launches first Next Gen textile dissolving pulp mill in China

This development is considered a key advancement as the fashion industry moves towards more sustainable and circular viscose supply chains. The facility will leverage both post-industrial and post-consumer textile waste collected from its supply chain affiliates to produce high-grade, low-carbon dissolving pulp suitable for various MMCF applications. With an initial production capability of 1,500 tonnes (t) annually, the plant by Yibin aims to fulfil the increasing demand for sustainable materials that can serve as alternatives to traditional high-carbon forest fibre within the fashion industry. This initiative is in line with China's national objectives to cut down textile waste by 30% by 2030. Building upon innovative efforts by entities like Circulose, Yibin plans to augment its Next Gen production to reach 60,000t by 2027, contingent on market support. Canopy founder and executive director Nicole Rycroft said: 'Canopy is thrilled with Yibin Grace's leadership with the launch of China's first Next Gen textile dissolving pulp mill. "Expanding circular production positions the sector to withstand supply volatility associated with increased forest fires and to capture markets looking for low-impact materials. We look forward to Yibin scaling this technology to commercial levels and being an early-solution provider to the textile sector. This is just the beginning!' Situated in Sichuan, China, Yibin Grace boasts a total production capacity of 450,000t per year across its range of products including viscose staple fibre, viscose filament yarn, and lyocell. The company operates three distinct facilities. It also holds a 30% ownership interest in Xinjiang Ya'ao, a fourth mill situated in the Xinjiang Province of China. Yibin Grace operates a single facility dedicated to producing viscose staple fibre, which has attained the aspirational level across three critical areas of chemical management: the recovery of chemicals, the discharge of wastewater, and the emission of air pollutants. The company is also an early adopter of Circulose recycled pulp in its product lines, marketed under the ReGracell brand. Since partnering with Canopy in 2018, the company has secured a Dark Green Shirt ranking in the Hot Button Report of 2024 in recognition for its commitment to environmental stewardship and maintains a record clear of sourcing from ancient and endangered forests. Circulose partners with Tangshan Sanyou to boost textile circularity

This collaboration will support the advancement and widespread adoption of Circulose while also elevating Tangshan Sanyou's global presence. Circulose is a branded dissolving pulp made entirely from textile waste rich in cellulose, such as discarded cotton jeans and production leftovers. Tangshan Sanyou manufactures ReVisco, a viscose staple fibre that incorporates 30% to 50% dissolving pulp sourced from post-consumer recycled content. Together, the companies will ensure that ReVisco fibres, produced with Circulose pulp, align with market expectations in terms of quality, availability, and affordability. This joint effort is poised to propel both entities forward in sustainable material innovation. Circulose CEO Jonatan Janmark said: "We are thrilled to establish a strong strategic partnership with Tangshan Sanyou. This represents a crucial step forward in our global expansion strategy, fostering closer, more in-depth collaborations with innovative fibre producers and like-minded brands. As the first major strategic partnership since the restructuring of Circulose, this collaboration will serve as a cornerstone of our success. 'Together with Tangshan Sanyou and our brand partners, we will ensure the scalable development of ReVisco fibres by using Circulose pulp in a predictable and controlled manner. We highly value our long-term partnership with Tangshan Sanyou and look forward to achieving mutual success as we shape the future of the industry." The alliance underscores both companies' dedication to scaling up the use of ReVisco circular materials and expediting China's textile sector's shift towards a circular and renewable model. Leveraging Circulose's textile recycling innovation alongside China's extensive supply chain capabilities, Tangshan Sanyou's ReVisco fibre is poised not only to satisfy the rising demand for eco-friendly textiles but also to catalyse a transformative textile-to-textile shift on an international level. Tangshan Sanyou Chemical Fiber executive vice president Zhang Dongbin said: "Tangshan Sanyou has always believed in the strong potential of recycling cotton textile waste, which is essential for fostering a green and sustainable industry. "We have unwavering confidence in the market potential of Circulose and its new strategic direction, and we are excited about our future collaboration. With the long-term investment support of Altor Capital and the market-driven, brand-focused strategies led by Helena and Jonatan, we believe Circulose will bridge the gap between brands and suppliers, pioneering a new era for the circular textile industry." Tangshan Sanyou is a manufacturer of cellulose fibre, offering over 100 varieties across three generations of cellulose fibres including conventional viscose staple fibre, modal fibre, and lyocell fibre, with an annual production capacity of 830,000 tonnes. Since Circulose's inception (formerly known as Renewcell), Sanyou has been a strategic partner and continues to be one of the primary users of Circulose pulp for its fibre production. In June last year, Swedish investment firm Altor acquired Renewcell out of bankruptcy and operated it under the name Circulose. Circulose partnered with US lifestyle fashion brand Faherty Brand in September 2024 on a new collection made entirely from textile waste.
