What kept Kelly Clarkson going during ex-husband Brandon Blackstock's ‘devastating' cancer fight

'Workhorse' Kelly Clarkson kept going during her ex Brandon Blackstock's private three-year cancer battle because she had no other choice. The Grammy winner, 43, not only had a syndicated daily talk show to deliver, but she was also gearing up to launch her Las Vegas residency at Caesars Palace in July, just weeks before his shocking death. Blackstock passed away at age 48 on Thursday, August 7, after suffering from melanoma, a serious form of skin cancer. 14 Kelly Clarkson performing at the Citi Concert Series for the 'Today' Show in New York on May 6. Instagram/@kellyclarkson Clarkson held his diagnosis tight to her chest, with sources revealing she told her talk show staff the news in confidence and asked for confidentiality out of respect for the family. Insiders reveal it was those staff members who kept Clarkson going through the hardest time of her life. 'A big part of it was making her schedule available for transporting the children to visit Brandon, and all of the emotions that came with this difficult time,' the insider told Us Weekly, referring to her mysterious 'Kelly Clarkson Show' 10-episode absence earlier this year. 14 Kelly Clarkson returned to her talk show after a 10-episode absence in March. She hates disappointing people, truly. The thing that kept her going was knowing how many people depend on her, like her crews and employees,' they disclosed. Clarkson, who postponed the remaining August shows of her Las Vegas residency this week, is set to return to work next month. While her residency isn't scheduled to pick back up until November, sources said 'The Kelly Clarkson Show' is still scheduled to return for Season 7 in September. 14 Kelly Clarkson performing during the 'Kelly Clarkson: Studio Sessions' on July 11, 2025, at The Colosseum at Caesars Palace. 'She has family and friends, but at the end of the day, it's all on her,' the source explained. 'Thankfully, the Blackstocks have come really close together in this time, so they would be happy to be there for the kids.' Blackstock is survived by his three siblings and four children. Before marrying Clarkson, he welcomed daughter Savannah, 23, and son Seth, 18, with his first wife, Melissa Ashworth. 14 Brandon Blackstock died on August 7 after a three-year battle with cancer. Instagram/@kellyclarkson Just one month before his death, Savannah revealed she was expecting her second baby. Blackstock also leaves behind his famous talent manager father, Narvel Blackstock, who previously managed Clarkson and his ex-wife Reba McEntire's careers. 'When she found out that he was sick, she remained protective of him for their sake,' a source told People after Blackstock's death. 'Kelly has always tried to keep things classy. It became clear earlier this year that Brandon was not doing well. She's been devastated for the kids,' they added. Blackstock's family announced his passing in a statement obtained by The Post. 'It is with great sadness that we share the news that Brandon Blackstock has passed away. Brandon bravely battled cancer for more than three years,' his loved ones shared on Thursday. 'He passed away peacefully and was surrounded by family. We thank you for your thoughts and prayers and ask everyone to respect the family's privacy during this very difficult time,' they added.

Jessica Simpson rolls with wardrobe malfunction on 'Today' show

Jessica Simpson might have stepped away from music for more than a decade, but she's still a pro who keeps her cool on stage. The multi-hyphenate "A Public Affair" singer, 45, rolled with the punches when she experienced a minor wardrobe malfunction while performing on the "Today" show's Citi Concert Series Wednesday, July 23. While performing a medley of her '90s and 2000s hits "I Think I'm in Love with You" and "With You," her pale pink satin corset-style top appeared to slip down on the left side, showing a pink bra. "Of course, I have, like, a malfunction here and everywhere. But it's OK. I think my boob stayed in, so that's good," she told the "Today" hosts afterward. Simpson, whose last musical project was a Christmas album in 2010, released the first half of her two-part EP, "Nashville Canyon, Part 1," in March. Her set melded songs new and old, from "Fade" off her upcoming September EP release to 2005's "These Boots Are Made for Walkin'." "It was incredibly healing" to write new songs, Simpson told co-host Jenna Bush-Hager. "I was in Nashville; it was a crazy time for me. My life literally flipped upside down, and I really just had to focus on my purpose." She was "trying to inspire myself to get back up there, have the courage to do it in the face of heartbreak and the face of life completely changing," Simpson added. "Music saved my life. Nashville saved my life. All the songwriters, my band, everybody." In January, the singer and businesswoman revealed in a statement shared with USA TODAY that she and her husband of 10 years, Eric Johnson, were "living separately (and) navigating a painful situation in our marriage." They share three children: daughter Maxwell Drew, 13, son Ace Knute, 12, and daughter Birdie Mae, 6.

The singer, 45, released an EP, Nashville Canyon, Pt.1 in March, and dropped the single "Fade" on Tuesday. "I know that I was ready," she said of her new music. "I went to Nashville, I felt just a calling to just use my voice again, in a whole different way. Like, I was working on the collection for so long and still am, but I don't know there's just something inside of me that always has to sing and now I'm ready to be doing on stage in front of people again. But I just took a break, you know?" Simpson also discussed a new clothing collection she designed, which includes denim and accessories. In addition to her music, Simpson released her memoir Open Book in 2021. In January of this year, she and her husband, Eric Johnson announced their separation. They share three children -- Ace Knute, Maxwell and Birdie Mae.

And not to be mean, but she's being a flake,' they told the outlet. 'I'm sorry, but that's how it feels. She's being flaky. And that's very hard to be in business with.' The staffer added that while they 'love' the 'Breakaway' hitmaker, 'the whiplash' from her eleventh-hour cancelation 'is a lot.' 6 Kelly Clarkson canceled the Las Vegas residency due to vocal issues. Instagram/@kellyclarkson 'She's all in on the talk show, then she's not, then she is again. She's performing in Vegas, now she's not. It's her voice. It's personal issues. While crew members weren't in the know about the reason behind the cancelation, one worker told the outlet that the singer pulled the plug on her gig for voice-related reasons. 'Honestly I don't know if it's her voice or not,' they said.
