Friday the 13th curse? Why this infamous day still terrifies millions across the globe

If you're feeling a strange tingle of doom this month, check your calendar; there's a Friday the 13th approaching. Some laugh it off, while others actually hide indoors. But fear of this day is more than just bad luck; it's rooted in history, myth, and some truly bizarre facts. Since the Middle Ages, when there were mass murders, people have believed in superstitions about this date. Whether rooted in fear or folklore, it continues to unsettle many around the world. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Classic Solitaire , Built for Desktop Play Solitaire Install Now Undo Why is Friday the 13th considered unlucky? "People begin referring to it as unfortunate without providing an explanation. According to Stephen Winick, a folklore specialist at the American Folklife Center at The Library of Congress, "you get all kinds of weird theories about why Friday the 13th is unlucky." Here are the reasons why Friday the 13th is a terrible day, as per reports by NPR and Reading Eagle. Live Events Some people believe that Friday the 13th is unlucky because Judas was the thirteenth guest at the Last Supper or because the Knights Templar were condemned on that day. However, experts are uncertain about the truth of those claims, according to a report. ALSO READ: iOS update sparks outrage: iPhone users call new interface a total eyesore and Apple's worst look yet Stephen Winick first encountered references to Friday the 13th being unlucky in French plays and literature. In the 1834 play Les Finesses des Gribouilles, a character states, "I was born on a Friday, December 13th, 1813 from which come all of my misfortunes." Marquis de Salvo discussed a father who killed his daughter on Friday the 13th in the French literary journal Revue de Paris, writing, "It is always Fridays and the number thirteen that bring bad luck ." Due to the fact that Friday was the day of crucifixion, Fridays have historically been regarded as unlucky days in the English-speaking world and most likely throughout Europe since the Middle Ages. Although the Bible doesn't say if the crucifixion happened on a Friday the 13th. Every Friday was a day of penance in the old Catholic tradition. Where did this superstition even come from? Since 13 was regarded as a lucky number because of its association with the 13 people at the Last Supper, the notion that it is an unlucky number only emerged in the 17th century. Such notions were outlawed as superstitious after the Reformation, and what was once regarded as a good number was now viewed as a bad one. Many people experience anxiety and fear on Friday the 13th, as some people think it's an axis of evil. As the evil Judas joined the twelve demigods of mythology, the Scandinavians considered 13 to be unlucky. It has been mentioned that the Last Supper had thirteen guests and that Christ was crucified on a Friday. Judas, one of the greatest villains in history, was the thirteenth guest. As there are 12 tribes in Israel, the number 12 is lucky, while the number 13 is unlucky. In Roman culture, witches were thought to congregate in groups of twelve, with a thirteenth witch being regarded as the devil. During the Middle Ages, when King Philip IV of France tortured thousands of Knights Templars as heretics, Friday the 13th became a day of superstition and terror. The date of this one-day torture was October 13, 1307. Chaucer alludes to Friday the 13th as a day of writer's block, and literature describes it as a day of spine-tingling bad luck. Since many public hangings occurred on Fridays, Friday is known as the Day of the Hangman and 13 is linked to the death penalty in British culture. It was bad luck for the person who had to make the last step of the gallows to meet the hangman. What are some real events tied to Friday the 13th? During World War I, avalanches brought on by heavy snowfall and an abrupt thaw killed thousands of soldiers in the Dolomites on Dec. 13, 1916, also known as White Friday. On October 13, 1972, a Russian airliner crashed close to Moscow, killing 174 people. Twelve people died instantly in an Andean plane crash, and survivors turned to cannibalism. On July 13, 1979, after a string of bad incidents, which included falling through a glass door, losing his job, and hurting his wife by accident, Bob Renphrey decided to stay in bed on Fridays the 13th going forward. A 13-year-old boy in Suffolk, England, was struck by lightning at 1:13 p.m. on August 13, 2010, but he miraculously survived unharmed. Due to their long-standing negative connotations, Friday and the number 13 can cause phobias in those who suffer from anxiety disorders. Ritualistic behaviours like eating garlic, hanging shoes outside windows, and going around a room thirteen times on Friday the 13th are examples of how this fear shows up. Due to these cultural and historical connotations, Friday and the number 13 are associated with fear and hatred. FAQs Was Friday the 13th always considered unlucky? No, superstition only became popular in the twentieth century. Previously, Fridays and the number 13 were considered unlucky individually, but not together. Has anything really bad happened on Friday the 13th? Yes, from tragic plane crashes to avalanche deaths during World War I, history has some chilling coincidences associated with the date.

‘From nobody to the White House': Who is Dominick McGee? MAGA influencer stirring up outrage on X

(Photo: NYT) Dominick McGee was once just another online voice shouting into the void. But this April, the 31-year-old walked into the White House for a Trump press briefing — a moment of validation he proudly recorded for his 1.5 million X followers. 'I was a nobody,' he was quoted as saying by the New York Times. 'No clout, no followers, no nothing, no money. And look what's able to be created in the land of the free.' McGee's journey from a one-bedroom flat in Miami to the White House has been anything but usual. He started out posting conspiracy theories from his couch. Today, he's one of the most well-known far-right voices on X. At one point, he was ranked the third most influential user on the platform — just behind Elon Musk and Andrew Tate. But while he gained a lot of attention, the money didn't always follow. His rise came from a familiar formula: post all day, stir controversy, and grab attention. McGee starts his online work at 9 a.m. and continues until 8 p.m., hoping to catch the platform's algorithm. One post about WNBA star Brittney Griner went viral with over 11 million views after he encouraged users to misgender her. 'I know for a fact that Brittney Griner will go viral,' he said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Classic Solitaire , Built for Desktop Play Solitaire Download Undo 'It's a great post to start the day.' McGee grew up in South Carolina, where he once thought selling drugs or joining a gang might be his only way forward. Instead, he joined the Army, later studied at Penn State through a veterans' programme, and tried his hand at music and fashion. But it was Trump's 'Stop the Steal' campaign that brought him an online following. A Facebook group he ran was banned for sharing false election information. He then switched to X, where Elon Musk's platform rewarded posts that got attention — though the pay was unpredictable. Since 2023, McGee has made about $157,000 from X's revenue-sharing programme. He earned $67,000 in the first year, but after being kicked out of the programme in 2024, his payments dropped to just $12,000. He complained to Musk and got a 'Will fix' reply — but not much happened. He only got another $16,000 after that. McGee also earned about $62,000 from followers who pay $10 a month for his exclusive posts. He once landed a $150,000 deal to promote a MAGA-themed cryptocurrency. But that coin lost over 90% of its value, and McGee was left using what was left to pay for rent, food, and his dog's meals. At one point, he had only $7 in his bank account. Even though he talks about investing in real estate and buying a Lamborghini, McGee admitted he made less than $55,000 last year. 'Honestly, $150,000 is a lot compared to my broke a** in the past,' he said. 'But I'm actually pretty poor. I'm one of the poor creators.' One of his biggest complaints is that X doesn't tell creators how much they'll earn from each post, making it hard to plan. 'That's insane for any adult to have to live their life that way,' he said. Now, McGee is shifting again — this time to podcasting and short viral videos. He's started a new show recorded in a Miami apartment. The idea isn't just to talk, but to create 30-second clips that go viral. The topics are lighter — celebrity news and pop culture — meant to attract a wider audience before sharing his political views. It's a method used by others like Candace Owens. 'It's not what I started off as originally,' he said. 'It's a survival mechanism. That's what it takes.' But controversy keeps following him. In 2023, McGee was suspended from X for posting a disturbing news image about child sexual abuse. He later said he was misunderstood and upset that no one asked about his side of the story. On a recent podcast, a guest used a homophobic slur and shared white nationalist views. McGee seemed uncomfortable and later said, 'Social media has radicalised him a little bit.' 'The first goal is to be seen,' he said. 'And they give you that.'

Commuters celebrate ease of travelling on new double-decker flyover on Ashok Rajpath

Patna: City's long-snarled Ashok Rajpath is finally breathing easy. With the inauguration of the much-awaited double-decker flyover, one of the city's busiest and most congested stretches has witnessed a dramatic transformation. Once synonymous with bumper-to-bumper traffic and blaring horns, the arterial road — connecting key educational institutions, hospitals, markets, and residential pockets — is now seeing smoother rides, shorter travel times, and happier commuters. From e-rickshaw drivers and fruit sellers to students and shopkeepers, the city's residents are hailing the new flyover as a game changer in the city's daily life and mobility. Pintu Yadav, an e-rickshaw driver, said, "I have been driving an e-rickshaw for more than three years, apart from Sundays, there was not a single day that I travelled without facing any congestion. For a single trip from Kargil Chowk to Mahendru, it took more than 45 minutes, and so I used to make only three round trips throughout the day. Besides, the vehicle got discharged. But today, I covered the stretch in only 15 minutes. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Classic Solitaire , Built for Desktop Play Solitaire Download Undo I can take more trips, get more passengers, and earn more money." An owner of a general store, Mohd Raju, said the goods vehicle reached on time and left after delivering the items without causing any congestion or problems for commuters. "There is enough space under the flyover for parking. The new structure is good from a business perspective," he said. Moh Islam, a fruit seller at Sabzibagh, said, "When people used to stop their cars to buy fruits, it would cause a traffic jam, but now that's not the case. People can now shop comfortably without facing any traffic jams and the noise of horns." Youths, especially students, are more elated by the opening of the flyover as several colleges of Patna University, NIT-Patna, many reputed schools, libraries, and hostels and lodges are on this route. Akansha, a student of BN College, said she lives in Patna City and now travelling has become easier for her after the opening of tier-1, which is between Patna College and BN College. "From PMCH to Bishop House, there is often a traffic jam. Now, I can avoid this and reach the college on time. Earlier, I had to leave the house early, but now 20 minutes are enough to reach the college," she said. "I am a student of Patna College and have lived near Khazanchi Road for two years. Every day I faced traffic snarls. The situation today was completely different. There was no unnecessary honking and congestion. I have seen that people are easily reaching PMCH without any trouble," said Raman Agarwal, a student.

Mango prices plunge! 'King of fruits' now available at just Rs 40-45 per kg; rates unlikely to go up soon

The decline in mango prices can be attributed to increased production and early harvesting. (AI image) Mango prices in Uttar Pradesh, India's largest producer of the fruit, have decreased by approximately one-third compared to last year due to increased availability, according to growers and traders. The well-known Dasehri variety now sells for Rs 40-45 per kg, down from Rs 60 per kg in the previous year. The decline in prices can be attributed to increased production and early harvesting by farmers who sought to protect their crop from anticipated early monsoon rains. This decision was influenced by the Indian Meteorological Department's forecast of above-normal rainfall during the June-September period. "This year the mango production in Uttar Pradesh is estimated to be around 35 lakh metric tonnes, as compared to 25 lakh metric tonnes last year. There was 100% flowering of the mango trees, which indicates that the production will be good," said S Insram Ali, president of the Mango Growers Association of India, according to an ET report. "It is unlikely that prices will go up in the coming weeks," Ali said. Global mango production reached 25 million metric tonnes (MT) in 2024, with India contributing approximately half of the worldwide output. China and Indonesia followed with 3.8 million MT and 3.6 million MT respectively. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Classic Solitaire , Built for Desktop Play Solitaire Download Undo UP contributes roughly 20% to India's total mango production. Also Read | Forced to destroy! US rejects 15 mango shipments from India, exporters estimate losses of $500,000 In Andhra Pradesh's Tirupati and Chittoor regions, Totapuri mango prices have plummeted as pulp manufacturers have halted purchases from local farmers. The situation worsened when farmers harvested their crop earlier than usual, anticipating the arrival of monsoon rains. The current season has brought significant losses to Totapuri mango cultivators due to reduced market rates and pulp factories' delayed buying in the primary growing areas of Chittoor and Tirupati. According to Sudhir Reddy, a Tirupati-based mango trader, industry officials attribute this to unsold pulp stocks from the previous year. The mango market in West Bengal, a major producer state, has also experienced a sharp decline in prices, with premium quality mangoes now selling at Rs 45-50 per kg, down from Rs 80 per kg. "Production is good this year. Early plucking by the farmers has also resulted in prices falling," said Prasanta Pal, a mango trader from Kolkata.
