‘Unruly behaviour': Detroit-bound Delta Airlines flight diverted as passenger tries to open door mid-air; fights with attendant

Image: ClickOnDetroit A Delta Airlines flight bound for Detroit from Omaha was forced to make an emergency landing in eastern Iowa after a passenger reportedly fought with a flight attendant and tried to open an exit door mid-air, as per the pilot's communication with air traffic controllers, reported AP. Shortly after 6.00 pm on Thursday, the pilot of SkyWest Airlines Flight 3612 radioed the control tower at Eastern Iowa Airport in Cedar Rapids, requesting an emergency landing due to the disruptive passenger on board. Plane bound for Detroit Metro Airport diverted due to passenger trying to open exit door mid-flight 'He's in a fight with our flight attendant right now, trying to open the emergency exit,' the pilot said, according to a recording captured by LiveATC. Delta Connection Flight 3612, operated by SkyWest Airlines, was approximately one-third into its journey from Omaha to Detroit on Thursday when the incident occurred. Passengers and crew attempted to stop the man from opening the door of the flight. The passenger, identified as Mario Nikprelaj by the Cedar Rapids police, was immediately arrested after the flight landed in Iowa airport in Cedar Rapids. He is currently facing charges of disorderly conduct, assault, possession of prescription medication, and first-degree harassment, with additional charges still possible. The flight was able to continue on to Detroit later Thursday night, as per a statement issued by SkyWest Airlines, a Utah-based regional carrier that operates flights for major airlines including United, Delta, American, and Alaska Airlines. 'SkyWest has zero tolerance for unruly behaviour as safety for our customers and crew is our top priority,' the airlines said in a statement. Nikprelaj appeared in court on Friday, where a judge set his bond at $10,000, reported CNN.

Officials issue warning as dangerous insects reemerge in massive numbers — here's what you need to know

An invasive caterpillar species is chowing down on the trees of Michigan as part of its multiyear life cycle, and it needs to be managed sooner rather than later. Spongy moth caterpillars reemerged this spring in Michigan, where they cluster on oak trees and other deciduous species, eating their leaves and leaving them vulnerable to other pests and diseases, per ClickOnDetroit. Debris from their activities and droppings can create a nuisance for people, and their hairs are potential irritants to humans as well. They spread partly by the wind blowing small caterpillars to other trees or humans moving their egg clusters on firewood from place to place, as the Michigan State University website detailed. Spongy moth caterpillars feast on hundreds of species of trees, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, making ample opportunity for other pests to move in and cause damage, on top of other stress conditions that can leave numerous dead trees in their wake. The current generation is part of the outbreak that began in 2019, according to ClickOnDetroit. In 2021, they did 1.3 million acres of damage, declining to 386,000 in 2022, which is a significant drop, but populations will collapse from a variety of factors for 8 to 12 years before popping back up, so management is crucial. Invasive species like this caterpillar can reduce biodiversity by ousting native species for resources, or in this case, reducing the availability of resources and habitats by killing trees. The loss of trees also hurts the larger environment by lowering the ability of plants and forests to do things such as trapping carbon. There's also the negative impact on the economy. According to the National Invasive Species Information Center, invasive alien species cost the global economy at least $1.288 trillion over 50 years, leading up to a 2021 report. That's an ironic number to consider when the spongy moth caterpillar was brought to the U.S. in the 1860s by naturalists trying to breed a sturdier silkworm, according to the Connecticut Department of Energy & Environmental Protection. In a shipment with some French silkworms, the spongy moth caterpillar hitched a ride and has been in the U.S. ever since. According to ClickOnDetroit, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources first recommends non-pesticide means of control and management for the caterpillar. The department recommends keeping an eye out for egg clusters and scraping them into buckets of soapy water, as well as sweeping grown caterpillars into soapy water. You can also make a trunk trap by tying a burlap band around the trunk of trees you want to protect. Pesticide is a last-ditch option, and the DNR recommended seeking professional help for especially difficult infestations. Mom and Her Boyfriend Allegedly Killed 3-Year-Old to 'Make Room' For Baby of Their Own: Prosecutor

A Michigan man and woman arrested in connection with the 2018 death of the woman's toddler are accused of killing the boy to make way for the child they planned to have together. The boy, 3-year-old Matthew Maison, was killed on Feb. 18, 2018, the St. Clair County Sheriff's Office said in a statement announcing the arrests of his mother and the mom's ex-boyfriend. Amanda Maison, 33, and Maurice Houle, 28, were arrested on a first-degree murder charge on Friday, April 11, per the statement. Houle was Amanda's boyfriend at the time of the killing, per The Detroit News and ClickOnDetroit. The investigation began when the boy was found dead in his bed by babysitters in his Port Huron Township, Mich., home, per the Times Herald and the Sanilac Broadcasting Company. During the pair's arraignment on Monday, St. Clair County Assistant Prosecuting Attorney Joshua Sparling alleged the suspects abused Matthew for years, culminating in his eventual death, ClickOnDetroit and WPHM reported. The alleged abuse included locking up the child without food and water and suffocating the child with a pillow over his head, prosecutors said. Houle and Amanda allegedly admitted the abuse to police, ClickOnDetroit reported, citing Sparling's assertions in court. Amanda allegedly told police she would hit the child's head against the drywall so "forceful" that it would 'remove the backing of the drywall itself,' Sparling alleged in court. Sparling alleged in court that the suspects abused and killed Matthew in a bid to 'make room for a child that the two of them could have together,' per the outlet. Following Matthew's killing, Amanda's father and stepmother publicly advocated for an arrest in the case. Through a Facebook group 'Justice for Matthew,' they organized campaigns to raise awareness about the case. "The fight is far from over — this is just the beginning. We deeply appreciate each and every one of you in Matthew's Army. Words cannot fully express the enormous support we feel from all of you," his maternal step-grandmother wrote in a Facebook post on addition to the murder charge, Houle has also been charged with assaulting/resisting arrest injuring an officer, per online court records, which did not indicate attorney information. Court records for Amanda also did not show attorney information. Both are being held without bond. Both have entered not guilty pleas, per ClickOnDetroit. If you suspect child abuse, call the Childhelp National Child Abuse Hotline at 1-800-4-A-Child or 1-800-422-4453, or go to All calls are toll-free and confidential. The hotline is available 24/7 in more than 170 languages. Read the original article on People
