‘Greatest spoof of all time': When ‘The Golden Girls' took aim at ‘Clueless' at the MTV Movie Awards
By any measure, Clueless is a pop-culture classic. Amy Heckerling's zeitgesty film — which celebrates its 30th anniversary this weekend, launched its cast (Alicia Silverstone! Paul Rudd! Brittany Murphy!) as stars, established style trends, and recalibrated the vernacular ("as if," "she's a full-on Monet"), all while making bank at the box office. And while it didn't compete for an Oscar, the film earned its share of accolades: Heckerling won Best Screenplay from the National Society of Film Critics and her script was nominated for a WGA Award; and Silverstone received awards for Breakthrough Performance from the National Board of Review and Funniest Actress at the American Comedy Awards. The film was up for four awards, including Best Movie (it lost to Seven), with Silverstone winning for Best Female Performance and the pre-#MeToo prize of Most Desirable Female. And yet, the movie's golden moment was upstaged by The Golden Girls. Four years after wrapping their Emmy-winning run on the NBC sitcom, Estelle Getty, Betty White, and Rue McClanahan reunited for a gut-busting, culture-clashing parody of Clueless. Getty riffed on Silverstone's Cher, with White and McClahanan playing her besties. (The fourth Golden Girl, Bea Arthur, was MIA for the spoof.) How ‘Clueless' bucked the trope of the rich mean girl
A girl who appears to have everything must at least be in want of sympathy. That's what Jane Austen assumed about her fictional heroine Emma Woodhouse, whom, the author reportedly declared, 'no one but myself will much like.' How many people could fall for a heroine who's not only handsome and clever but 'rich, with a comfortable home' and who has 'very little to distress or vex her?' Legions, it turns out. Including after the character's transplant to 1995 Beverly Hills, where the high-gloss perfection of her everyday life raises the opening question, 'Is this, like, a Noxzema commercial or what?' 'Clueless,' which turns 30 this week, remains an exception among teen movies the same way its literary inspiration, 'Emma,' marked a radical turn in the tradition of the European novel when it was published in 1815. Then as now, young, wealthy female characters were, if not altogether mean, at least not often rendered as deserving of our affection. Subscribe to The Post Most newsletter for the most important and interesting stories from The Washington Post. From Heather Chandler to Regina George, moneyed girls in high school movies tend to be deliciously coiffed villains, while those of humbler means and countenance, such as Andie Walsh ('Pretty in Pink') and Laney Boggs ('She's All That'), harbor innate goodness. But the movie's Cher Horowitz is a radiant anomaly, decked in head-to-toe designer duds and played by Alicia Silverstone, fresh off her breakthrough stint writhing around in convertibles in Aerosmith music videos. Plenty of teen movie heroines have been comfortably middle class, but the fabulously affluent kind are rare and briefly became something of a microtrend: There would be no Elle Woods marching off to Harvard Law in pink leather (in 2001's 'Legally Blonde') without a plaid-clad Cher arguing away her lowball grades. Pop culture lately has an appetite for eating the rich. But writer-director Amy Heckerling makes a clear distinction in 'Clueless' that seems nearly impossible today: The wealthy world Cher inhabits is the subject of the film's playful satire - not the ingenue herself. Cher is beautiful, popular and maybe not quite as clever as Emma, though she has her moments. But like Emma, Cher isn't overly conceited about her outward advantages. As Mr. Knightley (the model for Paul Rudd's Josh) observes of his future wife early in Austen's novel, 'considering how very handsome she is, she appears to be little occupied with it; her vanity lies another way.' Emma is vain in assuming she knows what's best for others when she acts on their behalf - out of a caring instinct that leads, time and again, to misunderstanding and folly. She has leisure to meddle in the romantic affairs of her friends because, unlike Elizabeth Bennet (of 'Pride and Prejudice') or Fanny Price (of 'Mansfield Park') before her, Emma doesn't need to marry to secure her fortune. Freed from the economic constraints of the conventional marriage plot, Emma has room to make mistakes, delude herself (and poor Harriet Smith, the primary casualty of her misguided matchmaking) and come around to love without the burden of necessity. 'Single women have a dreadful propensity for being poor,' Austen wrote in a letter to her niece, Fanny Knight, 'which is one very strong argument in favor of matrimony.' That same Fanny K., on encountering her aunt's sole protagonist of independent means, confessed that she 'could not bear Emma herself,' an opinion hand-noted by Austen on a page currently displayed at the Morgan Library and Museum, where the exhibit 'A Lively Mind: Jane Austen at 250,' commemorating the anniversary of the author's birth, runs through Sept. 14. Like most of Austen's intimates, Fanny rated 'Emma' 'not so well as either P&P or MP,' referring by initials to the novel's immediate predecessors, though she found Mr. Knightly 'delightful.' Austen's frequent confidante, Anne Sharp, gave perhaps the best praise of all, being 'pleased with the Heroine for her Originality.' W.H. Auden, reflecting on Austen's work in 'Letter to Lord Byron,' shuddered at her clear-eyed treatment of matrimony's financial incentives: 'It makes me most uncomfortable to see/ An English spinster of the middle-class/ Describe the amorous effects of 'brass'/ Reveal so frankly and with such sobriety/ The economic basis of society.' The young women of '90s Los Angeles aren't mating under pressure for survival, as so many of Austen's characters did in Regency England. But Heckerling's delightful skewering of social hierarchies and material excess - which includes everyone palming a cellphone the size of a stapler - is part of what makes 'Clueless' such a brilliant and enduring adaptation. (The 2022 film 'Fire Island' approaches similar sophistication, drawing from 'Pride and Prejudice' to illustrate status-obsession among queer men.) Ceilings soar, nose-job bandages are everywhere and the fashion, by costume designer Mona May, holds up a fun house mirror to Rodeo Drive. Such flourishes are still funny today because they're so deliriously over the top. But at the start of the first dot-com boom, all that ostentation was aspirational, too. Crucially, how anyone comes upon money in 'Clueless' is less important than having gobs of it to spend. But Cher's peculiar likability - how she manages, like Emma in Knightley's estimation, to be 'faultless in spite of all her faults' - is what makes her so difficult to replicate. Partly, that's because of Silverstone's high-pitched, puppy-dog performance, which included serendipities (such as the 18-year-old's unscripted mispronouncing of 'Haitians') that make the character's naivete indelible. Cher's limits of perception are guileless. There's an innocence about her - she's a virgin with a good heart who can't drive - that makes viewers as protective of Cher as her guard-dog father (Dan Hedaya) and do-gooder stepbrother-turned-love interest (Rudd). Could we love a character like Cher today, when the only quality less endearing than an abundance of privilege is being ignorant of it? Consider Olivia Mossbacher, Sydney Sweeney's deadpan manipulator in Season 1 of 'The White Lotus,' whose awareness of her family's advantages drips from every blank stare over her copy of 'The Portable Nietzsche.' (Incidentally, Josh also reads Nietzsche by the pool.) There's still an aspirational allure - call it privilege porn - to the HBO series and other recent satires of extreme wealth. But there's a reason so many of them ('Saltburn,' 'Triangle of Sadness,' 'Bodies Bodies Bodies') also involve murder: We're past the point when laughter alone expresses our distaste for disparity. Still, Cher Horowitz aspires to live on in the present. A stage musical adaptation, a passion project of Heckerling's, played off Broadway in 2018, and a revised version (with music by KT Tunstall) is running in London through Aug. 23 following its premiere last summer. And Silverstone herself is slated to reprise her role in a sequel series reportedly in development at Peacock, from the co-creators of 'Gossip Girl,' a far more ironic take on the genre. Can the heroine who already has everything enjoy yet another comeback? That depends how clueless she could possibly remain about having the one advantage that still matters most. Here's What The Cast Of "Clueless" Looks Like 30 Years After Its Premiere, And I Swear They Haven't Aged A Day
Brace yourselves — Clueless, which is arguably the best teen movie of all time, turns 30 this month. Yes, 30. The big 3-0. It is THIRTY YEARS OLD. Now that we all feel like our bones are crumbling to dust, let's check in with the cast and where they're at now... Alicia Silverstone as Cher: Archive Photos / Getty Images, Dia Dipasupil / WireImage, Clueless was one of Alicia's first film roles, and she went on to star in other '90s icons like Excess Baggage, Batman and Robin, and Blast From the Past. She's continued acting steadily over the years, recently in Netflix's The Baby-Sitters Club series. She's also a passionate animal rights activist and vegan. Paul Rudd as Josh: CBS Photo Archive / CBS via Getty Images, Stephanie Augello / Variety via Getty Images Although he had appeared in some TV series before Clueless, Josh was actually Paul's first big screen role. Since then, he's had a prolific and varied career, with roles in Romeo + Juliet, Friends, Parks and Recreation, Anchorman, The 40-Year Old Virgin, and, of course, the Marvel Cinematic Universe (and a whole bunch more). Most recently, he starred in Death of a Unicorn with Jenna Ortega. Stacey Dash as Dionne: CBS Photo Archive / CBS via Getty Images, Astrida Valigorsky / Getty Images Stacey had steady roles both before and after Clueless, although none that reached quite the same level of icon status. She was one of the film's few cast members to reprise their role in the Clueless spin-off TV series, which lasted three seasons. These days, she's perhaps more associated with her outspoken, conservative political views. Brittany Murphy as Tai: CBS Photo Archive / CBS via Getty Images, Michael Tullberg / Getty Images Before Clueless, Brittany had a fair amount of experience in TV roles, and went on to a successful big screen career, with notable roles in movies like Drop Dead Gorgeous, Girl Interrupted, Riding in Cars with Boys, 8 Mile, Just Married, and Uptown Girls. She also voiced Luanne in King of the Hill. Sadly, she died in December 2009 from pneumonia. She's pictured above right in 2009, just weeks before her death. Elisa Donovan as Amber: CBS Photo Archive / CBS via Getty Images, Rodin Eckenroth / WireImage Elisa had some small parts in the lead up to Clueless, but her role as Cher's frenemy Amber became what she's most known for — especially since she also reprised the role in the TV spin-off. She also had a notable role in the later seasons of Sabrina, The Teenage Witch, and continued acting over the years, with her most recent onscreen role in 2017's MDMA. Donald Faison as Murray: CBS Photo Archive / CBS via Getty Images, Mark Von Holden/NBC / NBC via Getty Images Clueless was Donald's first major role, and he went on to star in the Clueless TV series as well as movies like Can't Hardly Wait and Remember the Titans. He's now most known for his leading role as Turk alongside Zach Braff in the TV show Scrubs. Breckin Meyer as Travis: CBS Photo Archive / CBS via Getty Images, Alberto E. Rodriguez / Getty Images Breckin was a child actor prior to Clueless, and afterwards he starred in movies like The Craft, Can't Hardly Wait, Josie and the Pussycats, and Garfield. He also did voice work for King of the Hill alongside fellow Clueless alumni Brittany Murphy, and performed in, wrote, and produced Robot Chicken, which Donald Faison also did voice work for. Jeremy Sisto as Elton: CBS Photo Archive / CBS via Getty Images Jeremy had a few roles before Clueless, and has continued acting since, most notably in TV series like Six Feet Under, Law & Order, Suburgatory, The Returned, and most recently, FBI: International. Dan Hedaya as Mel: CBS Photo Archive / CBS via Getty Images, Jamie McCarthy / Getty Images for Tribeca Festival As one of the "adult" cast, Dan Hedaya had acted extensively before his role as Cher's father, Mel, in Clueless, including in movies like The Hunger, Joe Versus the Volcano, and The Addams Family, and TV shows like Cheers, The Tortellis, and Family Ties. He continued acting until recently — his last onscreen role was in 2021's The God Committee. Wallace Shawn as Mr. Hall: CBS Photo Archive / CBS via Getty Images, John Lamparski / Getty Images Wallace Shawn was perhaps the most well-known cast member prior to Clueless, having starred in one of the greatest movies of all time, The Princess Bride, as well as co-written and starred in the classic My Dinner with Andre, amongst many other roles. In the same year as Clueless, he also voiced Rex in Toy Story and Principal Mazur in A Goofy Movie. He continues to act and do voice work. In recent years, he's perhaps best known for his roles in Young Sheldon and Gossip Girl. In addition to acting and screenwriting, he's also a playwright and has published multiple books of essays. Twink Caplan as Ms. Geist: CBS Photo Archive / CBS via Getty Images, Rodrigo Vaz / FilmMagic Twink Caplan (pictured above right in 2013) was known for her role in Look Who's Talking before Clueless. In the years since, she's worked as a producer and actor, most recently with small parts in the TV shows All That and Royalties. Justin Walker as Christian: Clueless was Justin's very first role, and while he did take on a few roles afterwards, he seemingly left the entertainment industry by 2005, when he had his last onscreen role in the movie Takeout. He now appears to be extremely private. Solve the daily Crossword

Clueless cast members look very different as movie celebrates 30th anniversary
The wildly popular '90s romantic comedy Clueless is celebrating its 30th anniversary on July 19... but do you recognize the cast today? The original 1995 movie, which is loosely based on Jane Austen's novel Emma, starred Alicia Silverstone, Paul Rudd, the late Brittany Murphy, Stacey Dash, Breckin Meyer, and Donald Faison. The Amy Heckerling-directed movie was a surprise box office smash and made $88million with a budget of $12million. Three decades later the rom-com has maintained such a devoted following that it sparked a teen sitcom, an off-Broadway musical, and a forthcoming TV series. Fans were left divided by the announcement of a Clueless television series at Peacock, with Alicia set to reprise her iconic role. However, the upcoming series will be written by Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage who worked on Gossip Girl and The O.C. which gave millennial Clueless lovers hope for the eventual reboot - plus, Silverstone is returning to the small screen. Despite the movie's popularity and the cast skyrocketing to superstardom from relative obscurity, plenty of drama followed them after the film's premiere. Now, Daily Mail is revealing how the surprising blockbuster transformed the lives of the cast, who were plagued by addiction issues, multiple divorces, and a whole range of controversies. These days, Silverstone, 48, looks nothing like the plaid-wearing, preppy fashionista she shot to fame playing when she was only 18. She often dresses down in neutral tones and has lived a much more granola life than her bougie Beverly Hills counterpart. The vegan lifestyle blogger has found herself in hot water many times over the years for her parenting beliefs, including saying her son Bear has never needed medicine thanks to being vegan and taking baths with her son during quarantine. The star also posted a video in which she fed her infant by chewing food and then transferring it from her mouth straight to his, which proved to be quite controversial as a parenting technique. Alicia shares Bear with ex-husband Christopher Jarecki, who she was married to from 2005 to 2018. They share joint legal and physical custody and she pays him spousal support. While she might seem as far removed as possible from glamorous Cher, Alicia has revisited the character who made her famous over the years. Most recently she reprised the role during a Super Bowl commercial for Rakuten, stepping back into her famous yellow plaid ensemble. Stacey Dash, 58, played Cher's best friend Dionne, a fellow Beverly Hills preppy party girl. Unlike Silverstone, Dash reprised her role for the Clueless TV series in 1996. Since her time on Clueless she has proven to be quite the controversial figure, with multiple divorces, a Fox firing, and a mugshot to her name. Over the years, Dash has opened up about her abusive upbringing and her struggles with drugs, admitting that she was taking 18 to 20 Vicodin pills a day at the height of her addiction. The right wing anchorwoman has also proven quite controversial. The former commentator was fired by Fox News in 2016 after she claimed Barack Obama 'didn't give a s***' about terrorism. Dash drew intense criticism for backing Donald Trump's statement after the 2017 Charlottesville neo-Nazi rally in Virginia when he said there were 'very fine people on both sides,' as well as for defending Trump's claim that Mexican immigrants were drug traffickers, rapists and criminals and calling for an end to celebrating Black History Month. In a DailyMailTV interview in March 2021, Dash apologized for any hurt she had caused, blaming her 'arrogant pride and anger' and vowed to withdraw from politics. Dash has also dealt with a myriad of serious issues in her personal life. The star has been married and divorced four times and has two children. In September 2019, Dash was arrested for alleged domestic assault towards then-husband Jeffrey Marty, after she called 911 to report he 'put her in a chokehold.' Marty later bailed her out and case was dropped on his request. Heartthrob Justin Walker, 55, played potential love interest Christian Stovitz, who was Cher's crush until she realized he wasn't interested in women after her failed seduction. Walker disappeared from the spotlight and now looks quite different, sporting salt and pepper locks instead of '90s heartthrob hair. Walker went on to appear in an episode of Pamela Anderson's V.I.P and a Pizza Hut ad and later ran California restaurant Teddy Teadle's Grill before launching a fantasy sport wagering website. Of course, Brittany Murphy, who played outsider Tai Frasier who gets the ultimate cool girl makeover, met the most tragic end of all. After her breakout role in Clueless, Brittany went on to star in hit films like Girl Interrupted, Uptown Girl,s and Riding In Cars With Boys. She then married English filmmaker Simon Monjack in 2007. However, their life together was cut short when in December 2009, the actress suddenly passed away at just 32 from pneumonia, which was said to be exacerbated by iron-deficiency anemia and an overdose of legal drugs. For some luckier actors, Clueless proved to be a star making moment that didn't lead to behind-the-scenes issues. Jeremy Sisto, who played popular high schooler Elton in Clueless, went on to star in more than 20 movies, including Thirteen and Waitress. Sisto also appeared in Six Feet Under, Suburgatory (which Silverstone played his love interest), Law & Order and FBI. Donald Faison, 51, who played Dash's popular boyfriend Murray, went on to reprise his role in the TV series and take off from there. The dad of six starred in Scrubs alongside pal Zach Braff. Breckin Meyer, 51, who appeared as Tai's love interest, the stoner skateboarder Travis, went on to star in Road Trip, Rat Race, Garfield, and Robot Chicken. Paul Rudd, who starred as Cher's handsome college step-brother Josh Lucas, has had a massive Hollywood career ever since his debut film and managed to avoid any drama in his personal life. Rudd, 55, starred as Marvel's Ant-Man and appeared in classic comedy movies like Anchorman and Ghostbusters.

Jane Austen fans urged to watch 'brilliant' and 'refreshing' movie adaptation
Jane Austen fans may have missed this adaptation of her works As Jane Austen marks her 250th birthday this year, fans are revisiting the celebrated author's works. Over the years, numerous adaptations of her novels have been created, along with fresh interpretations that draw inspiration from her books, reports the Express. Some notable examples include Bridget Jones's Diary, which reimagines Pride and Prejudice in a modern setting, and Clueless, which transposes Emma from Regency England to the complex social hierarchy of a 1990s Beverly Hills high school. Additionally, there are productions like ITV's Lost in Austen, where a contemporary woman finds herself in the world of Pride and Prejudice, and Austenland, which follows a romantic as she visits a Jane Austen-themed park in pursuit of her Regency dreams. However, one lesser-known adaptation, featuring two Virgin River stars, is also worth watching. On IMDb, one viewer praised the film as "brilliant", saying: "Vibrant, colorful [sic], hilarious and lively, this movie was a sheer joy to watch. A refreshing take on an old classic." Another reviewer commented: "Well, it's pretty hard, isn't it, to write a spoiler for a film which is based on such a well-known, well-loved novel! I will show my hand here and say that I am a Janeite. "However, I am not a purist and I like many Jane Austen adaptations that many Janeites don't (for example I like 'Mansfield Park')." One viewer noted: "The script did a pretty good job of capturing the essence of the story whilst playing around with some of the details eg cutting out the fifth daughter whose role in the story is pretty minimal, and making the 'tyrant' in Darcy's life his mother not his aunt (a more realistic situation in its modern setting)." Another fan chimed in: "Gurinder Chadha has transported Jane Austen's great novel to India. What a charmer this film turns out to be! The adaptation of the novel is excellent as the new locale is incorporated to the story." They continued: "The incredible Indian colors explode in front of our eyes giving the Western viewers such an opportunity to experience a little taste of India [sic]." Bride and Prejudice, released in 2004, masterfully blended Bollywood and Hollywood through the lens of Jane Austen. Directed by Gurinder Chadha of Bend It Like Beckham fame, the film offered a refreshing spin on Austen's classic tale of Pride and Prejudice. Bollywood icon Aishwarya Rai Bachchan took centre stage as Lalita Bakshi, who initially butts heads with the suave American businessman Will Darcy, played by Martin Henderson, before they inevitably fall for each other. Joining Henderson was Daniel Gillies, known for his roles in Virgin River and The Originals, who portrayed his rival George Wickham - a role that amusingly mirrors their respective characters in Netflix's romantic drama series. The cast also boasts acclaimed Indian actor Anupam Kher, known for his roles in Bend It Like Beckham and Hotel Mumbai, Naveen Andrews of Lost and The English Patient fame, Namrata Shirodkar from Hera Pheri and Major, Indira Varma who starred in Game of Thrones and Luther, and EastEnders ' Nitin Ganatra.
