Clemson baseball roasted by social media for embarrassing season-ending loss to Kentucky
Clemson baseball roasted by social media for embarrassing season-ending loss to Kentucky Clemson baseball's 2025 season ended with an ugly 16-4 loss to the Kentucky Wildcats Sunday at the Clemson Regional of the NCAA Tournament at Doug Kingsmore Stadium. From No. 2 in the Coaches Poll and top 25 rankings just six weeks earlier to being one of the first host seeds to be eliminated on its home field in the 64-team tournament in regional play, the Tigers' once-promising season ended in colossal disappointment. The Tigers, who close the year at 45-18 overall, committed four errors in the first four innings and would finish with seven for the day. The offense never got a big rally going after grabbing a quick 2-0 lead in the first inning against a Kentucky (31-25) team that entered the tournament just five games over .500 for the year and finished 13th out of 16th in the SEC. RELATED: Live updates from Clemson vs. Kentucky Jarren Purify totaled four of the Tigers' nine hits in the loss, and Cam Cannarella got a nice ovation from the home crowd in what's expected to be his final at-bat in a Clemson uniform. If so, the junior outfielder ends his college career with a 22-game hitting streak. But it was the Tigers' pitching staff and defense (lack thereof) that was the big story. Clemson pitching allowed 16 runs on 13 hits, and the Tigers' College World Series drought will now reach 15 years after another disappointing NCAA tournament exit. Here's how Clemson fans and media reacted to the Tigers' demise on social media. Auburn baseball remains No. 10 in latest USA TODAY Coaches Poll
Auburn baseball remains No. 10 in latest USA TODAY Coaches Poll Auburn remains a top 10 team ahead of this weekend's regional play In the latest USA TODAY Baseball Coaches Poll, the Auburn Tigers remained at No. 10 in the rankings despite failing to win a game in the SEC Baseball Tournament last week in Hoover, Alabama. Auburn lost 3-2 to the Texas A&M Aggies in the second round last Thursday. However, the Tigers did receive good news. They were rewarded as the host of the regional round for the third time in four seasons. Joining the Tigers for the Auburn Regional are NC State, Stetson, and Central Connecticut State. The new rankings saw some movement at the top. The North Carolina Tar Heels jumped to No. 1 from No. 3 the week prior. After winning the SEC Tournament Championship over Ole Miss, Vanderbilt jumped five spots from No. 9 to No. 4. Ole Miss saw a big jump going up five spots with a ranking of No. 15. LSU dropped from the No. 1 ranking to No. 3 after their semifinal exit to Ole Miss in a 2-0 loss. The remaining SEC teams in the rankings were Texas (No.2), Arkansas (No. 5), Georgia (No. 6), Tennessee (No.16), Florida (No. 18), and Alabama (No. 20). The Tigers struggled with the bats in their 3-2 loss to Texas A&M. Auburn only had six hits and did not score a run until the fifth inning. Lucas Steele and Eric Snow did hit two home runs in the game. Auburn will enter their regional game against Central Connecticut on Friday losing three of four games. As for the matter of top 25 rankings, there's a new No. 1 team atop the USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll heading into the NCAA Tournament, and it's an ACC team. The North Carolina Tar Heels (42-12 overall) claimed the top spot in the Coaches Poll for the first time all season after winning the ACC Tournament on Sunday in a 14-4 beatdown of Clemson. Erik Bakich's Tigers (44-16 overall) were ranked No. 12 in Monday's poll, the last to be released until after a national champion is crowned in the College World Series in Omaha. Clemson remained in the same spot as last week, despite going 3-0 at the ACC Tournament to get into the conference title game against UNC on Sunday. The Tigers took down Virginia Tech, No. 4 seed NC State, and No. 1 overall seed Georgia Tech in Durham to secure a top-16 national seed. Clemson will host a regional in the 2025 NCAA Tournament beginning Friday. Clemson was ranked one spot below No. 11 Coastal Carolina (48-11) and one spot ahead of No. 13 UCLA (42-16). Is Clemson baseball now a top eight seed? Latest NCAA Tournament projections
Is Clemson baseball now a top eight seed? Latest NCAA Tournament projections The latest expert projections for the 2025 NCAA Division I baseball tournament are in, and things are looking good for the Clemson Tigers. Clemson (44-15 overall) won its third game in four days at the 2025 ACC Baseball Championship in Durham on Saturday by taking down No. 1 seed Georgia Tech in the tournament semifinals. The Tigers will face No. 3 seed North Carolina in the championship game today at noon ET. The surge by Erik Bakich's team is all but certain to have made Clemson a lock as a top-16 national seed and a regional host for the NCAA Tournament. Is a top eight seed still in play? Clemson would need to beat UNC in today's ACC title game to secure it, but if they do, those cards are very much on the table -- at least according to the latest expert projections. Securing a top eight seed would ensure the Tigers of hosting a super regional, if they win their four-team, double-elimination on-site regional. Here are the latest postseason projections for Clemson as of Sunday morning. NCAA Baseball Tournament 2025: Clemson rising in latest projections Baseball America projection: Clemson is No. 8 overall seed, hosting Dallas Baptist (40-16), Cincinnati Bearcats (32-24), and Fairfield Stags (38-17) in Clemson Regional at Doug Kingsmore Stadium. Dallas Baptist, ranked No. 19 in the Coaches Poll, was eliminated from the CUSA tournament by Jacksonville State on Saturday. Cincinnati was eliminated by West Virginia in the Big 12 tournament on Thursday, while Fairfield will play Rider for the MAAC championship and automatic bid today. D1 Baseball projection: Clemson is No. 11 overall seed, hosting UCLA Bruins (42-15), Kentucky Wildcats (29-24), and Bryant Bulldogs (38-15-1) in Clemson Regional. UCLA is playing for the Big Ten championship against Nebraska today. In the Bruins' case, a host site regional is likely at stake for the regular season co-champions. Kentucky bowed out on the first day at the SEC Tournament but is No. 36 in RPI with a strength of schedule ranked ninth. Bryant will face Binghamton for the American East conference's automatic bid. On3 projection: Clemson is No. 9 overall seed, hosting Alabama Crimson Tide (41-16), Rhode Island Rams (38-20) and Wright State (38-19) in Clemson Regional. Alabama will enter the NCAA tournament after notching 40 victories in the regular season. The Crimson Tide are ranked 21st in the Coaches Poll and were eliminated in their second game at the SEC Tournament by Tennessee. Rhode Island defeated George Mason, 4-1, in the Atlantic 10 conference championship game on Saturday to lock up an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament. Wright State, the Horizon League champion, did the same after taking down Milwaukee in its conference title game Saturday. On3's Jonathan Wagner said of Clemson: "All of a sudden, top eight is back in play for Clemson. The Tigers are 10-9 in Q1 games, went 18-12 in ACC play and can add ACC Tournament champions to their resume with a win over North Carolina on Sunday. If they do that, it wouldn't be surprising at all if they slide in." Clemson baseball RPI Heading into Sunday, Clemson was No. 7 in the college baseball RPI with a 44-15 overall record. The Tigers are No. 20 in strength of schedule rankings and are 10-9 against Quad 1 opponents, 14-5 against Quad 2 teams, 9-1 against Quad 3 teams, and 11-0 against Quad 4 opponents. North Carolina is one spot below Clemson at No. 8 in RPI. When is NCAA baseball tournament selection show? Clemson will learn its postseason regional in the NCAA Tournament on Monday, May 26 beginning at noon ET. The selection show will be televised on ESPN2. Regionals will begin Friday, May 30 and run through June 2, with Super Regionals Friday-Monday, June 6-9. The Men's College World Series in Omaha begins June 13.
