New boy Conor Coady on Wrexham's Premier League ambition
Phil Parkinson's men secured an historic third successive promotion last term to book their place in the second tier for the first time in 43 years. The Reds, backed by Hollywood stars Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, are making the biggest step-up since climbing through the divisions. But although the competition will be fierce when Wrexham come up against the likes of Southampton - Saturday's opponents at St Mary's Stadium on the opening day of the season - Coady says it is only natural for the club to want to keep the success story going and aim to seal a spot in the top-flight for the first time. "What I can say about this division is how tough it is," summer signing Coady told the club's YouTube channel. "A lot of the players have played in this division before, they know about it, but the big thing for me is that when you are in this division, I don't think people understand sometimes how close you are to getting to that next step if you do it right, and that is what I am here for. "I am here to do it right, I am here to try get to that next step and take this club to places where it wants to be. "I will give everything every single day to push the club as far as it can go." On facing Southampton - relegated from the Premier League last season - Coady added: "I can't wait. "I looked at the fixtures when I first heard of the interest and straight away I looked at who the first game was, who the second game was, and going through all the different bits and bobs." Centre-back Coady joined the Reds from Championship rivals Leicester City for an undisclosed fee. The ten-time England international played 43 times in all competitions for the Foxes, and adds vital experience to the squad with 485 professional appearances, 198 coming in the Premier League. After starting his career at boyhood club Liverpool where he made two senior appearances, Coady also played for Sheffield United, Huddersfield Town, Wolves and Everton. Coady has enjoyed a successful career but while Wrexham's ambitions appealed to him, he is delighted to move to a club close to home. "That is another thing that I am really thankful for," he added. "I spent a lot of years away from home, I spent a lot of years away from them (his family) so to get the opportunity to come home to them is a massive thing. "I live for them, I play football for them every single day so to have the opportunity to be back around them is fantastic. "To get the opportunity to play for this club first and foremost, I am massively excited about what is in front of us. "The club has got themselves into such a position that they are so close to doing something great. "If you can't do that something great, there is no point playing in this division. "We will go into it full of confidence. I'm sure they will after the amazing season the club has had and keep that spirit, keep that togetherness, and hopefully have a good season."

Inside Conor Coady's failed Rangers move as Leicester's reason for BLOCKING transfer to Ibrox revealed
Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) CONOR COADY was one of Rangers' main transfer targets this summer but he WON'T be heading to Ibrox. Now, some clarity has been offered regarding why the former England international's move to Glasgow failed to materialise. Sign up for the Rangers newsletter Sign up 2 Rangers missed out on Conor Coady Credit: Getty 2 Russell Martin wanted to bring Coady to the Light Blues Credit: PA Coady, 32, joined Wrexham from Leicester in a £2million deal last week. The transfer brought to an end weeks of speculation surrounding a switch to Rangers for the ex-Wolves captain. Coady had been with Leicester since 2023 and had been widely expected to move on this summer following the club's relegation back to the Championship. He emerged as a major transfer target for new Gers boss Russell Martin. The suggestion, too, was that Coady himself was keen on the move to Ibrox. But as the weeks went on, there was no agreement to be found despite it appearing close at one stage. Now, of course, a move for Coady is completely off the table with the centre-back having officially gone elsewhere. But why did the move to Rangers NOT happen? Well, a Sky Sports report has shed some light on Leicester's thinking. In short, reporter Rob Dorsett says that 'Leicester will sell no one on the cheap.' Billy Dodds on returning to Rangers under Barry Ferguson, defeating Mourinho & ending Celtic Park hoodoo Dorsett claims that Coady was under the impression he would be able to leave Leicester for FREE in order to get him off of the wage bill. The Sky report says that the Foxes then 'dug their heels in and said no to a free transfer to Rangers.' They were then able to get £2m for the defender. Rangers, meanwhile, have signed nine new players this summer. That includes two new centre-backs in Nasser Djiga and Emmanuel Fernandez. Wolves loanee Djiga has already proved himself a solid acquisition, earning several plaudits for his performance against Viktoria Plzen last night. The most recent signing, Oliver Antman, also impressed in the Champions League victory having made his debut from the start just a day after signing for the club. Have YOU got a point for Kris Boyd? Why Conor Coady didn't join Rangers ahead of Wrexham move
Russell Martin had already added Nasser Djiga on loan from Wolves and Emmanuel Fernandez permanently from Peterbrough as he strengthened his backline. But he wanted to add the experience of Coady to bolster it further. It was a transfer that was continually being reported as being close but the longer it went, the less chance you felt there was of it being completed. Eventually, he would sign on at Wrexham, joining former Rangers pair Ryan Hardie and Josh Windass. So, exactly why didn't the move to Rangers come off? Read more: According to a report in Sky Sports, both the Ibrox club and the player himself thought Leicester would allow him to leave for free in order to get him off the wage bill. But the Foxes refused to sanction an exit for nothing and instead got £2million from the Hollywood-backed Championship new boys. The report states: "Leicester will sell no one on the cheap. "Look at the £2m they got for 32-year-old Conor Coady, who only had one year left on his contract, from Wrexham. Coady thought he would be allowed to walk away for free, with Leicester saving his not-inconsiderable wages, but Leicester dug their heels in and said no to a free transfer to Rangers."

Jamie Vardy's feelings clear on Wrexham transfer as Premier League move eyed up
Jamie Vardy's feelings clear on Wrexham transfer as Premier League move eyed up Conor Coady has completed a move to Wrexham from Leicester City, with the defender's former Foxes team-mate Jamie Vardy among those to pay tribute to the 32-year-old Jamie Vardy with Conor Coady during their Leicester City days (Image: Catherine Ivill - AMA/Getty Images) Jamie Vardy has lauded Conor Coady following the defender's transfer from Leicester City to Wrexham. The Foxes pocketed a tidy £2million from the deal as the Welsh club gears up for the Championship, having secured promotion last season. Coady had a challenging stint at the King Power Stadium, with an injury sidelining him at the start of the 2023/24 promotion season. Jannik Vestergaard filled his shoes and never relinquished his spot. Despite featuring intermittently in the Premier League, the 32-year-old couldn't stave off a dismal season that culminated in relegation. However, it appears that Coady left a favourable impression on Vardy, who bid farewell to Leicester at the close of the 2024/25 season when his contract expired. "All the best brother. What a player and person," Vardy remarked on Coady's farewell message to Leicester supporters. In an Instagram post, Coady expressed his gratitude: "A massive thank you to everyone connected to Leicester City for giving me the opportunity to wear your shirt and share the dressing room with some fantastic people," reports the Mirror. "Even though last season was tough for us all, I wish nothing but the best for the whole football club this season and beyond." Article continues below Vardy's name has been bandied about in connection with Wrexham this summer, although it seems unlikely that the 38-year-old will be heading to the Racecourse Ground. The future of the former England international remains uncertain as Wrexham press ahead with their transfer dealings. Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney have sanctioned Phil Parkinson to recruit six fresh faces for the squad. Wrexham are also targeting Premier League talent and are reportedly keen on securing Pedro Lima on loan from Wolves. The Molineux outfit pipped Chelsea to land the 19-year-old Brazilian's signature. The transfer materialised after Lima seemed to indicate he would join Chelsea from Sport Recife, yet the teenager eventually penned a five-year contract with Wolves. Wrexham could now provide the youngster with crucial game-time as they seek to cement their position in the Championship. Ex-Crystal Palace manager Iain Dowie reckons Wrexham won't require long before mounting a Premier League promotion push. Article continues below Speaking to BoyleSports, Dowie said: "I think it's a matter of time before Wrexham are challenging. I think they really will be up there challenging. You look at the club and look at even some of the teams that are in the Championship, I think it's harder ever to get out of this league. "Having said that, Wrexham have the fan base, they have the backing, it takes a very clever management, but they've got a very clever manager. There's no doubt they will be challenging and there is every chance they can challenge this year, but Phil Parkinson would be very happy, I think with 10th and above."

Jamie Vardy shares feelings on Wrexham transfer as ambitious Premier League move eyed up
Wrexham have been busy in the transfer market ahead of their season in the Championship after achieving promotion last term and have completed a transfer for Conor Coady Jamie Vardy has paid tribute to Conor Coady after the defender completed a move to Wrexham from Leicester City. The Foxes earned a £2million fee from the move as the Welsh side look to equip themselves for the Championship after earning promotion last season. Coady struggled to impress during his time at the King Power Stadium after injury ruled him out of the start of the 2023/24 promotion season where Jannik Vestergaard stepped in and did not hand his spot back. The 32-year-old featured in rotation in the Premier League but could not prevent a dire season that ended in relegation. It nevertheless seems that Coady left a positive impression on Vardy, who departed Leicester at the end of 2024/25 following the expiry of his contract. 'All the best brother. What a player and person," Vardy commented on Coady's exit message to Leicester fans. Writing on Instagram, Coady said: "A massive thank you to everyone connected to Leicester City for giving me the opportunity to wear your shirt and share the dressing room with some fantastic people. "Even though last season was tough for us all, I wish nothing but the best for the whole football club this season and beyond." Vardy's name is one that has been linked to Wrexham this summer, though it does not appear the 38-year-old will be making the move to the Racecourse Ground. The former England international's future remains up in the air as Wrexham move on with their transfer business. Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney have given Phil Parkinson the go-ahead to bring in six new players. And in addition to Coady, the Dragons are said to have agreed a £2million fee for Wales international striker Kieffer Moore from Sheffield United. Wrexham are also eyeing Premier League talent are reported to have expressed an interest in signing Pedro Lima on loan from Wolves. The Molineux side beat Chelsea to the signature of the 19-year-old Brazilian. That deal arrived after Lima appeared to confirm he would sign for Chelsea from Sport Recife, but the teenager ultimately signed a five-year deal with Wolves. And now Wrexham could be set to offer the player minutes as they look to establish themselves in the Championship. Former Crystal Palace boss Iain Dowie believes Wrexham will not long to challenge for a place in the Premier League. Speaking to BoyleSports, Dowie said: "I think it's a matter of time before Wrexham are challenging. I think they really will be up there challenging. You look at the club and look at even some of the teams that are in the Championship, I think it's harder ever to get out of this league. "Having said that, Wrexham have the fan base, they have the backing, it takes a very clever management, but they've got a very clever manager. There's no doubt they will be challenging and there is every chance they can challenge this year, but Phil Parkinson would be very happy, I think with 10th and above.
