Swim king Kyle Chalmers opens up on devastating mental health toll of love triangle controversy as he prepares to become a first-time father

Australian swimming champion Kyle Chalmers has opened up about some of the mental health challenges he faced during the 'love triangle' drama. Chalmers, 27, went through a rollercoaster of emotions at the 2022 Commonwealth Games as claims of a 'love triangle' emerged between himself, ex-girlfriend Emma McKeon and Cody Simpson. The ordeal tested him emotionally and led to Chalmers seriously considering quitting the sport he loves. 'It definitely impacted my mental health and wellbeing, and it kind of made me be like, "Do I actually want to put myself through this," and, "This is not what I signed up for to be a swimmer",' Chalmers told Body+Soul. 'I love swimming. I love representing my country at the highest level. But I don't want to talk about my personal life and then have that criticised in front of the world. 'As a young person in sport, you get into it for the love of sport; you don't ever think you're going to have to deal with these things.' Chalmers, who has previously said he was considering giving everything up to play country footy, revealed Aussie athletes of all stripes reached out to him. 'I received a lot of love from amazing athletes around Australia, and the world,' he said. 'Sam Kerr and Patrick Dangerfield reaching out to me was crazy, and Michael Clarke also, someone I grew up idolising. 'There were a lot of athletes in my corner supporting how I was feeling.' Chalmers is now engaged to Norwegian swimmer fiancée Ingeborg Løyning and expecting his first child. He says his life has already changed in many ways. 'You're quite selfish as an athlete, because you've always got to put yourself first,' he said. 'It's always prioritising your sleep and your recovery, and what you're eating and your plan for the day, to get the best out of yourself in the pool. 'Whereas now, it's already no longer about me. I'm prioritising my fiancee, how she's feeling in the pregnancy and doing what I can to support her through this period. 'And then eventually, it's going to be prioritising the baby, and the athlete will come second.' After his swimming career is over, he plans to complete his trade qualifications and return to his childhood home of Port Lincoln. He and Ingeborg are also excited about the Chalmers Swim Academy they have started, which will also offer mental health support alongside first-class virtual coaching. 'I don't want the next generation of swimmers to have to go through what I've gone through with the media,' he said. 'I want them to feel comfortable, rather than feeling criticised and fearing what the media could say or do.' Chalmers is still passionate about swimming and will surely be lighting up the pool again soon. 'Brisbane 2032 could be an option if I'm still loving it and enjoying my sport,' he said.

Kyle Chalmers reveals mental challenge of ‘love triangle' drama

Olympic gold medallist and soon-to-be dad Kyle Chalmers admits he questioned his swimming career as he lifted the lid on his mental health battles amid the Australian team 'love triangle' saga. The Aussie swimmer who won gold at the 2016 Rio Olympics found himself at the centre of controversy in 2022 when reports surfaced fellow swimmer and former girlfriend Emma McKeon was dating singer-turned-swimmer Cody Simpson. 'It definitely impacted my mental health and wellbeing, and it kind of made me be like, 'Do I actually want to put myself through this,' and, 'This is not what I signed up for to be a swimmer',' Chalmers exclusively tells this Sunday's edition of Body+Soul. 'I love swimming. I love representing my country at the highest level. But I don't want to talk about my personal life and then have that criticised in front of the world. 'As a young person in sport, you get into it for the love of sport; you don't ever think you're going to have to deal with these things,' Chalmers, who has a total of nine medals across three Olympic Games in Rio, Tokyo and Paris, said. He revealed he received messages of support from some of the biggest names in Australian sport when he took such a public stand. 'I received a lot of love from amazing athletes around Australia, and the world,' he said. 'Sam Kerr and Patrick Dangerfield reaching out to me was crazy, and Michael Clark also, someone I grew up idolising. 'There were a lot of athletes in my corner supporting how I was feeling.' The 27-year-old's life looks very different these days; engaged to Norwegian Olympic swimmer Ingeborg Løyning, with the couple expecting their first baby this September. For an athlete who has spent nine sessions a week in the pool for the past 14 years – on top of gym, physio and rehab sessions – the soon-to-be dad said his perspective has certainly shifted. 'You're quite selfish as an athlete, because you've always got to put yourself first. It's always prioritising your sleep and your recovery, and what you're eating and your plan for the day, to get the best out of yourself in the pool,' Chalmers said. 'Whereas now, it's already no longer about me. I'm prioritising my fiancee, how she's feeling in the pregnancy and doing what I can to support her through this period. And then eventually, it's going to be prioritising the baby, and the athlete will come second.' But Chalmers is still just as committed to swimming, heading to Singapore for the Swimming World Championships in July after qualifying in the 50m freestyle, 100m freestyle and 50m butterfly. The veteran is also looking to turn his experiences into lessons to develop his Chalmers Swim Academy business started up with Løyning, which offers young swimmers virtual coaching and help around mental health. 'I don't want the next generation of swimmers to have to go through what I've gone through with the media. I want them to feel comfortable, rather than feeling criticised and fearing what the media could say or do,' Chalmers said. He's also set a possible retirement date, saying there's at least another seven years in the legs. 'Brisbane 2032 could be an option if I'm still loving it and enjoying my sport. I'll be 34, which is getting older for a swimmer, but it's definitely possible.' But he admitted: '[Swimming] is super important to me, but it's not the number-one thing in my life any more. My family and my friends, being a great fiancee and soon-to-be great dad are so much more important to me than being the very best athlete.'

Cody Simpson and Olympian girlfriend Emma McKeon look loved up as they reunite in Los Angeles - after discussing marriage plans

Cody Simpson and Emma McKeon recently spent a little time on separate continents. The Australian singer and the Olympic swimmer stepped out in Los Angeles this weekend and looked loved up and relaxed. In January, Cody stayed behind in LA, where he's based, while McKeon attended the Australian Open but the pair have since resumed spending time together. The 28-year-old pop star turned swimmer dressed casually in a graphic shirt and a pair of wide fit dark blue jeans. Emma, 30, also kept things dressed down in a black Prince Neptune hoodie and a pair of shirt shorts. Both had sunglasses on, with Emma choosing a fun heart shaped pair, and both wore sneakers. McKeon and Simpson, a pop star turned competitive swimmer, first met in the Australian swimming circuit. Their relationship reportedly began blossoming during training camps and competitions as part of the national team. The pair went public in July 2022, with Cody praising Emma's influence on his transition to professional swimming. Both have supported each other at major events, including the 2022 Commonwealth Games, where Emma achieved record-breaking success. They've also been spotted enjoying downtime together, from beach outings to attending social events and loved-up dates in romantic locations around the world. Simpson recently spoke about marriage potentially being on the cards. 'We have something that is beautiful and honest and pure,' Simpson said, adding that marriage was possible down the line. 'When something means enough to you and family does and will mean that much to me, it will always be a part of the picture,' he added. 'You owe yourself the honour of cultivating your talents with as much fervour and intensity as you can. 'The privilege of becoming what you're capable of becoming. 'I left nothing to the unknown these past 4 years and I can now rest knowing I put my pedal to the floor every day and covered every other little detail to take this as far it could go and it sure went a hell of a ways.'
