Colin Cowherd Shares Intriguing Take on Bill Belichick's Tar Heels

Colin Cowherd Shares Intriguing Take on Bill Belichick's Tar Heels originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Fox show host Colin Cowherd continues to be a fun listen, with one of his latest obsessions being Bill Belichick's North Carolina. Advertisement The former NFL coach, who won six Super Bowls while leading the New England Patriots, shocked the football universe when he accepted the Tar Heels' Job in December 2024, as many believed he wanted to return to a professional locker room. Now, he's coaching college students and is on the front lines of recruitment. Belichick recently helped flip four-star safety Jakob Weatherspoon's commitment from Ohio State to North Carolina, and Cowherd loves it. 'Ohio State lost like a four-star recruit to Bill Belichick and North Carolina. I'm fascinated with this story,' Cowherd said. He's a grumpy 73-year-old who never really showed any interest in college football.' Advertisement Despite being less experienced at the college level, Cowherd sees potential for a breakout season due to their competition being worse than that of other major conferences. 'I think if Belichick was in the SEC or Big 10, he'd get absolutely rolled, but the ACC is so God awful outside of Clemson. He may just coach his way to a lot of wins,' Cowherd said. 'If you look at the schedule, it's not exactly powerhouses. The oddsmakers, they've given them the ninth best odds to win the horrible ACC,' he added. With South Alabama transfer quarterback potentially emerging as a dual-threat talent, Belichick's tactical brilliance could shine. As the Tar Heels prepare for their season opener against TCU, the mixture of a manageable schedule and Belichick's football knowledge could make them a school to watch in 2025. Is the Big Ten on the Verge of Claiming Dominance in College Football?

For years, the dominant conference in college football has been the Southeastern Conference (SEC). Since the start of the College Football Playoff era in 2014, the SEC has won six of 11 national championships. However, the tide could be turning, as a new superior conference may emerge, according to FOX's Colin Cowherd. The past two national champions have come from the Big Ten: Michigan in 2023 and Ohio State last year. Could this indicate a power shift in college football? With an expanded conference, the Big Ten conference now includes Oregon, USC, UCLA and Washington. While UCLA isn't a significant player in terms of conference impact, the advantages of NIL and revenue sharing make being a college student in Los Angeles more appealing. However, UCLA will still have to compete with crosstown rival USC, which has more recent success and a bigger brand. In its first year in the Big Ten, Oregon won the conference championship, defeating Penn State 45-37 and capping off a perfect regular season. Oregon earned a first-round bye in the newly formatted CFP, while two other Big Ten teams prepared for their first-round games. Penn State easily handled SMU, 38-10. Ohio State, coming off an upset loss to unranked rival Michigan, faced Tennessee in a highly anticipated matchup. In the first Big Ten vs. SEC game of the new CFP era, this matchup served as a measurement of the two superior conferences. The Buckeyes routed Tennessee, 42-17. On their path to another national championship, the Buckeyes faced another SEC opponent, the Texas Longhorns. Ohio State and Texas met in the semifinals; while the Buckeyes didn't dominate the Longhorns as decisively as they did against Tennessee, they still won by two scores and held Texas to 14 points — the lowest scored against them since November 2022. Cowherd pointed out that with NIL, the Big Ten now has money to spend and isn't afraid to do so. Last year, Ohio State had the most expensive roster, spending over $20 million on its team. This year, they again rank among the top spenders in the sport, coming in at No. 3, with three other Big Ten schools close behind: No. 4 Oregon, and Michigan and USC tied for seventh. In 2023, on their route to a national championship, Michigan defeated Alabama in the CFP Semifinals at the Rose Bowl, 27-20. Last season, in a "down" year for both programs, they met again in the ReliaQuest Bowl and it was the same result. Michigan defeated Alabama 19-13. To kick off the 2025-26 season, some of the top teams in the Big Ten and SEC are set to meet in Week 1. Ohio State hosts Texas in a rematch of the Cotton Bowl Semifinal, and the Buckeyes are favored -2.5 in this highly anticipated Week 1 matchup. Want great stories delivered right to your inbox? Colin Cowherd Explains Why Dallas Cowboys Are 'Trapped' This Season

Colin Cowherd Explains Why Dallas Cowboys Are 'Trapped' This Season originally appeared on The Spun. T.J. Watt's record-breaking contract extension could spell doom for the Dallas Cowboys, according to Colin Cowherd. On Friday's episode of his FOX Sports radio show, the syndicated sports talk host broke down why he feels the Cowboys are now "trapped" because of the Steelers' new deal when it comes to All-Pro Micah Parsons. "The Cowboys tend to wait, and wait, and wait. So now Dallas is trapped. ... If I was Micah Parsons and I was Micah Parsons' agent I'd want 85% of T.J. Watt's [contract]. If T.J. Watt's getting $41 million, Micah's gotta $37.5 or $38 [million]. He's also four years younger," Cowherd argued. "The Cowboys are going to pay Dak [Prescott] top of the market, CeeDee Lamb top of the market— they already are — now they're going to have Micah top of the market. Do I think Micah Parsons is worth that? No I don't," the FS1 personality continued. "But Dallas is trapped because Jerry [Jones] has too much influence on the draft, they haven't drafted particularly well and the Cowboys roster is so top-heavy and so ordinary Dallas can't [move off stars]." The Cowboys have kicked the can down the road on many of their big contracts only to pay 120 cents on the dollar for what they could've had much cheaper if they locked up deals sooner. That seems to be the way Jerry Jones likes to do business these days and its likely part of why they haven't sniffed an NFC Championship Game or Super Bowl in three decades. Cowherd also floated the idea of Dallas hiring Nick Saban earlier this week — someone he believes could overcome the disfunction that's been at The Star in Frisco in recent Cowherd Explains Why Dallas Cowboys Are 'Trapped' This Season first appeared on The Spun on Jul 19, 2025 This story was originally reported by The Spun on Jul 19, 2025, where it first appeared.

Colin Cowherd Thinks Nick Saban Will Be The Next Dallas Cowboys Coach

Colin Cowherd Thinks Nick Saban Will Be The Next Dallas Cowboys Coach originally appeared on The Spun. Colin Cowherd has an idea about what former college football head coach Nick Saban has planned for the future. It involves taking over a certain NFL team situated in Dallas and craving new leadership. On the latest episode of The Herd, Cowherd asserted that he believes Saban will be the next head coach of the Dallas Cowboys if things go south with current head coach Brian Schottenheimer. He declared that he's "convinced" Saban will return to the NFL. "I am convinced Nick Saban is returning to coach in the NFL and it will be with the Dallas Cowboys… @AlbertBreer doesn't think it's the craziest idea he's ever heard," Cowherd wrote on X. NFL and college football fans quickly dismissed Cowherd's proclamation. Many have pointed out that Saban would never tolerate Cowboys owner Jerry Jones due to Jones' penchant for meddling with his coaches. Others pointed out that Cowherd has been wrong about too many big things to be trusted on this one. "With Jerry? C'mon - Saban couldn't and wouldn't tolerate the Jones boys meddling. Not a chance in Haiti is Nick in Dallas," one user remarked. "You were also convinced the Pittsburgh Steelers should trade Tj Watt George Pickens and three first rounders for Shedeur Sanders," another pointed out. "I'm convinced you are off your rocker," a third wrote. "He already did the NFL thing. He already walked away. And unless the man WAKES UP CRAVING STRESS and CHAOS - this AIN'T happening. I'm not sayin' it's impossible…but I'm tellin' you RIGHT NOW, don't bet your house on it. That's a fantasy, not a forecast." Saban infamously served as head coach of the Miami Dolphins from 2005 to 2006. After going a respectable 9-7 in his first year, he went 6-10 the next year and resigned in order to take the Alabama job. From there, he became one of the greatest coaches in college football history. Perhaps Cowherd thinks that Saban's ego will compel him to try and become one of the very few coaches to win both a national title and a Super Bowl like Jimmy Johnson and Pete Carroll have. But with seven national titles to his record, Saban doesn't need to risk a legacy bump for a shot at a legacy boost. Colin Cowherd names the top college football programs of today. Where is Ohio State?

College football has seen more changes than the price of gas these days, and there doesn't seem to be an end in sight. In order for the best programs to keep up, they have to embrace Name, Image and Likeness, the transfer portal, direct revenue sharing, and anything else that comes their way. Oh, and you still better have a good coaching staff and be able to recruit among the best. Ohio State showed that it can compete in that environment last season by taking home the College Football Playoff national championship in the inaugural 12-team playoff, but can it continue to do so in the future? There's a further expanded playoff most likely on the way, along with many other changes that are still to come, so it'll be important for the Buckeyes to get out ahead of everything to continue to be one of the very best in the country. Colin Cowherd recently discussed this very topic and tried to come up with the college football programs positioned the best moving forward. He used the same metrics and things that teams have to embrace and be creative with in the ever-changing environment we're in. With all of that in mind, Cowherd likes where Ohio State is, so much so that when rattling off the five best college football programs right now, he chose the Buckeyes as No. 1 with a close second-place going to Georgia. Beyond that, he likes Texas, Oregon, and Notre Dame to round out his top five, then threw in Alabama at No. 6, followed by Penn State and Michigan. Have a listen and watch yourself to hear Cowherd heap praise on Ohio State as the best program in college football today and in the near future. Even though we've seen Ohio State struggle landing some of its extreme priorities this year in the 2026 class, it is still recruiting at a high level with everything in place to continue to be one of the best college football programs nationally, just like it has been for years. And yes, for once, Cowherd agrees. Contact/Follow us @BuckeyesWire on X (formerly Twitter) and like our page on Facebook to follow ongoing coverage of Ohio State news, notes and opinion.
