Luis Diaz has no doubt what he wants now after ‘winning everything' at Liverpool

Luis Diaz played a huge part in helping to deliver Liverpool's 20th top-flight league title, but the Colombian star has insisted that the hard work is just beginning After a stellar season at Liverpool, Luis Diaz is now aiming to achieve success with the Colombian national team. The 28-year-old was a key figure in Arne Slot 's debut season, wrapping it up with an impressive tally of 17 goals and eight assists across all competitions. 'Lucho' also made history as the second Colombian to win the Premier League following Juan Cuadrado's title win with Chelsea back in 2014/2015. Unlike Cuadrado, however, Diaz's contributions were vital for Liverpool in clinching their record-equalling 20th league crown. ‌ He made the left flank his own during the second half of the season, also filling in when needed at centre-forward. Despite his domestic success, the Barrancas-born star is not resting on his laurels and is eager to replicate such achievements on the international stage. ‌ 'Right now, I'm coming to terms with what I've achieved," he told TNT Sports Mexico in the aftermath of Liverpool's title celebrations. "It's not easy to get here, there were difficulties, but here we are, enjoying the moment. We won the Premier League, which was the dream I was missing." Colombia currently sit sixth in the CONMEBOL World Cup qualifying group. They have huge games against Peru and Argentina on the horizon, and Diaz has his eye firmly on realising another dream. He added: 'I'm obviously happy for winning everything with Liverpool. And well, with the national team, winning a World Cup or a Copa América would be a dream for me. So we'll work towards that." ‌ Diaz, who is often serenaded by the Kop with one of their most memorable songs in recent years, has quickly become a fan favourite. While he hasn't won "everything" with the Reds, he can add his Premier League medal to the two League Cups and FA Cup he's won on Merseyside since joining from Porto in January 2022. He also made an appearance in the 2022 Champions League final, yet lost out as the Reds were beaten 1-0 by Real Madrid. Despite his growing importance to Slot's team, it's rumoured that the forward is attracting interest from Saudi Arabia, with Al-Nassr reportedly considering a move. ‌ Barcelona are also believed to be keeping an eye on the winger, reports the Liverpool Echo. While no official approach has been made to Liverpool yet, interest from Saudi Arabia is thought to be longstanding. However, earlier this month, Diaz openly expressed his wish to stay at Anfield. He even hinted at extending his contract, which currently has two years left on it. ‌ "Yes, happy," he told Telemundo. "From the first day I arrived, I've always been happy, calm, enjoying the football played at this great team. We'll be talking about it, we'll talk about it (the renewal). "For me, I would stay however many years it takes, [but] it also depends on the club, everything. These are details that are sorted out separately. Very calm, I'm happy and enjoying the Premier League." Join our new WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Mirror Football content. "Disappointed in the reaction of Colombia," All-Party Delegation Leader Tharoor says

Bogota [Colombia], May 30 (ANI): All-Party Delegation Leader and Congress MP Shashi Tharoor said that he was disappointed with the Colombian government, as they condoled the deaths of Pakistanis in Indian strikes, instead of sympathising with the victims of the terror attack in India. Tharoor said that there can be no equivalence between perpetrators of terrorism and those who resist it. 'I have to say that we were a little disappointed in the reaction of the Colombian government, which apparently expressed heartfelt condolences on the loss of lives in Pakistan after the Indian strikes, rather than sympathising with the victims of terrorism,' he said. Tharoor added that his delegation is here to clear the air and explain India's stance to Colombia- how India exercised its right to self-defence. 'We will say to our friends in Colombia, there can be no equivalence between those who dispatch terrorists and those who resist them. There can be no equivalence between those who attack and those who defend. We are only exercising our right of self-defence, and if there is any misunderstanding here on this call, we are here to dispel any such misunderstanding. We're very happy to talk to Colombia in some detail about the circumstances,' he said. Tharoor explained how Pakistan-based 'The Resistance Front', a unit of Lashkar-e-Taiba, claimed responsibility for the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack twice. 'We have, as I said, very concrete proof. When this terrorist attack occurred, it was immediately claimed by an organisation called The Resistance Front, which is a unit of the Lashkar-e-Taiba based in Muridke, Pakistan. There is no doubt that they reiterated this credit the next day. It is only after their handlers realised the damage this could do that they then deleted the claim two days later, but the claim has been made,' he said. Tharoor said that just like India, Colombia too has endured several terror attacks and India has the right to self-defence. He said that it is a well-known fact that Pakistan has been a breeding ground for terrorism. 'There is no doubt as to where this came from, and we will reserve the right to hit back. Just as Colombia has endured many terror attacks, so have we in India. We have endured a very large number of attacks for almost four decades. Frankly, it is now very well established that Pakistan has been breeding the monsters of terrorism for a very long time for their purposes,' he said. In a post on X, Tharoor said, 'Our Colombia visit got underway today with a briefing to the delegation from our Ambassador, Vanlalhuma, followed by a well-attended press interaction with more than a dozen local media outlets. I then did an interview with Colombian journalist Juan Camillo Ramirez. Getting the message out where it needs to be heard!' The Tharoor-led multiparty delegation includes Shambhavi Chaudhary (Lok Janshakti Party), Sarfaraz Ahmed (Jharkhand Mukti Morcha), G M Harish Balayogi (Telugu Desam Party), Shashank Mani Tripathi, Tejaswi Surya, Bhubaneswar Kalita (all from BJP), Mallikarjun Devda (Shiv Sena), former Indian Ambassador to the US Taranjit Singh Sandhu, and Shiv Sena MP Milind Deora. The all-party delegation, consisting of representatives from seven national political groups, was initiated to counter Pakistan's misinformation and underscore India's zero-tolerance policy on terrorism. 'Little disappointed': Tharoor to Colombia over its stand on Operation Sindoor

NEW DELHI: Congress MP Shashi Tharoor has expressed disappointment over Colombia's recent statement on India's military strikes under Operation Sindoor. 'We were a little disappointed in the reaction of the Colombian government, which apparently expressed heartfelt condolences on the loss of lives in Pakistan after the Indian strikes, rather than sympathising with the victims of terrorism, he said. Tharoor is currently in Bogotá as part of an Indian foreign outreach delegation following Operation Sindoor, launched in response to the Pahalgam terror attack that killed 26 people. Speaking to reporters in Bogota, Tharoor said, 'We are here looking for understanding. We have the impression that perhaps the situation was not fully understood when that one statement was made. Understanding is extremely important for us. We are a country which has really been a force for constructive progress in the world,' he said. Tharoor further said that India's response was a matter of self-defence and not aggression. 'We certainly hope that other governments will tell those who give safe haven and protection to terrorists to stop doing so. That would be very helpful indeed, as well in the Security Council or outside it,' he stated.

‘No equivalence between those who dispatch terrorists and those who resist': Tharoor expresses disappointment over Colombia's reaction to Op Sindoor

Amid the global outreach on Operation Sindoor to rally support for India's war against terror, Congress MP Shashi Tharoor Friday expressed disappointment over the Colombian government's 'heartfelt condolences over the loss of lives in Pakistan, rather than sympathising with the victims of terror'. 'Colombian government, which apparently expressed heartfelt condolences on the loss of lives in Pakistan after the Indian strikes, rather than sympathising with the victims of terrorism. We will say to our friends in Colombia, there can be no equivalance between those who dispatch terrorists and those who resist them,' Tharoor, who is leading an all-party delegation, said in Bogotá. 'There can be no equivalence between those who attack and those who defend. We're only exercising our right of self-defence, and if there is any misunderstanding here on this core, we are here to dispel any such misunderstanding,' he added. Shashi Tharoor-led delegation includes Shambhavi Chaudhary (Lok Janshakti Party), Sarfaraz Ahmed (Jharkhand Mukti Morcha), G M Harish Balayagi (Telugu Desam Party), Shashank Mani Tripathi, Tejaswi Surya, Bhubaneswar Kalita (BJP), Mallikarjun Devda (Shiv Sena), former Indian Ambassador to the US, Taranjit Singh Sandhu, and Shiv Sena MP Milind Deora. During the conference, when asked about Pakistan's defence equipment, he said: 'We are quite conscious that China supplies 81 per cent of all Pakistani defence equipment. Defence is a polite word, Pakistani military equipment. Much of it is not for defence but for attack. Every sovereign country has the right to do that.' 'The single largest project in China's Belt and Road Initiative is in Pakistan, the so-called China-Pakistan Economic Corridor, which is a highway corridor connecting China to a port in southwestern Pakistan that permits goods to be transported relatively quickly and economically to western China. We are aware of that, and our concern is not with the rights of the Pakistani people to pursue development. Of course, they may do so, including with the partnership with China,' he added further. Tharoor also asserted that the fight is only against the perpetration of terror against India. Over the last few days, the Congress MP has been receiving flak from his own party after he praised India's response to terrorism in the past few years. Tharoor said that the first time India breached the Line of Control to attack a terror base in Pakistan was during the Uri surgical strikes. The Indian Army went one step beyond the LoC during Operation Sindoor, hitting terror bases, training centres, terror headquarters in nine locations. The remarks drew considerable flak from his own party leader Udit Raj, who accused Tharoor of being 'dishonest' with his own party. Posting on X, Raj said, 'I could prevail upon PM Modi to declare you as super spokesperson of BJP, even declaring as foreign minister before landing in India . How could you denigrate the golden history of Congress by saying that before PM Modi , India never crossed LOC and International border.'

Puerta, Mier earn Colombia call-up for World Cup qualifiers

Xinhua 30 May 2025, 08:15 GMT+10 BOGOTA, May 29 (Xinhua) -- Colombia manager Nestor Lorenzo has called up uncapped pair Gustavo Puerta and Kevin Mier for World Cup qualifiers against Peru and Argentina, the Colombian football federation said on Thursday. Midfielder Puerta has impressed during his loan spell with Hull City from Bayer Leverkusen, while goalkeeper Mier has been instrumental in Cruz Azul's run to the CONCACAF Champions Cup final. Lorenzo also recalled Andres Roman, Deiver Machado, Willer Ditta, Yaser Asprilla and Juan Camilo Hernandez, all of whom were absent from Colombia's last double header of qualifiers against Brazil and Paraguay in March. As expected, the 26-man squad includes Liverpool winger Luis Diaz, Leon midfielder James Rodriguez and Crystal Palace defender Daniel Munoz. Colombia will meet Peru in Barranquilla on June 6 and Argentina in Buenos Aires four days later. The Cafeteros are currently sixth in the 10-team South American zone standings with four qualifiers remaining. The top six teams will automatically qualify for football's showpiece event in the United States, Mexico and Canada next year, while the seventh-ranked side will dispute an intercontinental playoff.
