Deion Sanders admits son Shedeur's NFL draft slide 'hurt'
Deion Sanders admits son Shedeur's NFL draft slide 'hurt' Colorado Buffaloes head coach Deion Sanders has openly expressed his disappointment over how his son, Shedeur Sanders, was treated during the lead-up to the 2025 NFL draft. Despite being a projected first-round pick, Sanders fell to the fifth round, selected No. 144 by the Cleveland Browns. The elder Sanders attributes the unexpected slide to what he describes as "foolish stuff" and baseless criticisms that emerged during the pre-draft period. One significant point of contention was a report suggesting that the former Colorado quarterback performed poorly in interviews, with specific reporting saying Sanders was unprepared. "When you sit up there and say something like he went into a meeting unprepared, like dude, Shedeur Sanders, who's had six different coordinators?" Deion Sanders said on Asante Samuel's podcast last Friday. Deion also said that his son would never wear headphones into a meeting, as one rumor said. "You gonna tell me he had on headphones, Shedeur?" Sanders asked. "Anybody know my son understands he's a professional? Like he's gonna go into a meeting with headphones on?" Sanders admitted that the draft slide and everything that followed were not a comfortable feeling, and how the criticisms took an emotional toll on their family. He shared that although the adverse reports hurt, he believes they have instilled a necessary edge in Shedeur, comparing it to the motivation that drove players like Tom Brady, one of his son's most significant mentors. "It did hurt," Sanders said. "It did hurt. But the Bible says God uses the foolish things to confound the wise. There was some foolish stuff that went on, but you know what? That gave them something that they needed. Like that edge that Tom had." Since the NFL draft, Sanders has avoided the media spotlight that is typically always surrounding the CU head coach. After appearing on Samuel's podcast, it seems like the lack of media was no accident, as Sanders suggested it was related to a health issue. "What I'm dealing with right now is at a whole nother level," Sanders said while stating he is coming back after losing nearly 14 pounds. The Buffaloes begin Sanders' third season Aug. 29 at home against Georgia Tech, which should be in front of a packed Folsom Field with season tickets already sold out. Colorado Football Faces Backlash After Team GPA Under Deion Sanders Surfaces
Colorado Football Faces Backlash After Team GPA Under Deion Sanders Surfaces originally appeared on Athlon Sports. There's no question that the Colorado Buffaloes football program has undergone a dramatic culture shift—largely for the better—since Deion Sanders took over as head coach in 2023. Now entering his third season at the helm, the program shared a notable update Friday evening. Advertisement Colorado released its collective team GPA for the spring semester, which came in at 2.957. That mark represents the second-highest spring GPA in program history, just behind the 3.011 recorded during the fall 2024 semester. While the announcement was intended to reflect positively on the program's academic progress, it was met with mixed reactions. A 2.957 GPA—roughly equivalent to a B or B- average (around 80–81%)—is certainly an improvement compared to past years. Still, some fans were critical, with backlash surfacing across social media despite the strides being made both on and off the field. Fans reactions: Advertisement "Respect to Prime but 2.9 as your 2nd highest is crazy," a fan said. Someone else added, "Please delete this." "There was no reason to post this," another fan posted. "Nothing to be proud about a 2.957 GPA," a fan shared. One more fan commented, "That's an embarrassing standard… but guess u ain't there to play school." Colorado Buffaloes head coach Deion Sanders speaks during a press conference. Michael Ciaglo-Imagn Images While the GPA may not jump off the page to some in the Buffaloes fanbase, it's important to note that the two highest GPAs in the program's long history of Division I football have come under Deion Sanders' leadership. That alone signals progress as he enters his third season at the helm. Advertisement Sanders has already made a significant impact—sending several players to the NFL in April's draft and coaching a Heisman Trophy winner in Travis Hunter, only the second player in Colorado history to earn that honor. Now, he steps into arguably the most intriguing chapter of his coaching career: the first season at Colorado without Hunter or his two sons, Shedeur and Shilo Sanders—all of whom were key contributors over the past two years. Deion Sanders, Colorado Buffaloes add three-star former Big 10 offensive lineman transfer
Deion Sanders, Colorado Buffaloes add three-star former Big 10 offensive lineman transfer Deion Sanders is beefing up the trenches again as the Colorado Buffaloes added another offensive lineman through the transfer portal. The Buffs landed former Northwestern Wildcats offensive guard transfer Cooper Lovelace on Friday. The guard was ranked a three-star transfer recruit by 247Sports. He entered the portal on April 25. Lovelace was a junior college prospect before spending two years at USC and 2024 with the Wildcats. He joins Colorado with one year of eligibility remaining. The 6-foot-5, 300-pound guard started eight games and appeared in 11 for the Wildcats. Lovelace was the No. 1 interior offensive lineman prospect, a JUCO prospect, before committing to USC. As a transfer, he was ranked the 113th-best interior lineman in the portal. Lovelace only played one year of high school football before playing at Butler Community College in El Dorado, Kansas. During his time at Butler, he played all over the trenches, getting snaps at center, guard and tackle. His versatility would continue on the Division I level. In his 2023 season at USC, he played right tackle and right guard in four games. In Lovelace's lone season at Northwestern, he started eight games at left guard and allowed only one sack. He is now the fourth offensive lineman Coach Prime has added in the spring portal window and the ninth overall this offseason. Lovelace is also the 32nd transfer Colorado has brought in, though both the winter and spring periods. Deion Sanders Receives Major Update Before Third Season At Colorado
Deion Sanders Receives Major Update Before Third Season At Colorado originally appeared on Athlon Sports. As the University of Colorado football program gears up for its third season under head coach Deion "Coach Prime" Sanders, the buzz around Folsom Field has reached an all-time high. Advertisement In an announcement released Friday, Colorado confirmed that season tickets for the upcoming fall football slate have officially sold out for a third consecutive year. Prior to Sanders' arrival in December 2022, the program had not achieved a sellout in more than a quarter-century, with the last sustained streak running from 1990 through 1996. This marks only the 11th time in school history that season tickets have been fully claimed before a campaign even begins. Sanders launched his collegiate coaching career at Jackson State in September 2020, quickly turning the Tigers into a national talking point. Advertisement Over three seasons, he compiled a 27-6 record, capitalized on the transfer portal to revamp the roster and signed the nation's top recruits, including 2024 Heisman Trophy winner Travis Hunter and Deion's son, Shedeur Sanders. His success earned him the head coaching position at Colorado in December 2022. In his first season in 2023, Sanders led the Buffaloes to a 4-8 record (1-8 in Pac-12 play), a significant improvement over the program's 1-11 finish in 2022. Rebilas-Imagn Images After a remarkable turnaround that saw the Buffaloes finish the 2024 season at 9-4 overall and earn a berth in the Alamo Bowl, the excitement off the field has continued to build, setting the stage for the 2025 college football season.
