More than four years after his last game, Philip Rivers retires as a Charger

Often overlooked in an age of Peyton Manning and Tom Brady and Patrick Mahomes and Lamar Jackson is a quarterback who joined the NFL in 2004 as a first-round pick and performed at a high level for 17 seasons. More than four years after his last game — a playoff loss in Buffalo with the Colts — Philip Rivers has officially retired, with the Chargers. While stats like this aren't regularly kept, it's got to be one of the longest gaps between a player's last game and his official retirement with one of his former teams. Still, it was a nice surprise on the Monday afternoon of training-camps-are-open week. Even if my first thought was that the algorithm had dug deeper into the past than it usually does. Rivers ranks sixth all-time in passing yards, with 63,440. More than Matt Ryan, Dan Marino, Eli Manning, Warren Moon, and (for now) Aaron Rodgers and Matthew Stafford. Rivers is also sixth in passing touchdowns with 421. More than Ryan, Marino, Eli, Moon, Ben Roethlisberger, and (for now) Stafford. While not on the same level as the team's schedule-release videos, the segment posted on social media by the Chargers is worth your time. If only to remember his squeaky-voiced taunt to a Jaguars defender about a 'NINETY! YARD! TOUCHDOWN!' It's a shame he never played in a Super Bowl. And it's a shame he doesn't get the attention he should. Philip Rivers was a great player, and a great character, of the past 20 years in the NFL.

All players, before the first practice and as mandated by the CBA, will undergo a physical upon their arrival to be medically cleared to participate. While all eyes over the next several weeks will be on Anthony Richardson and Daniel Jones competing for the starting quarterback role, there are camp competitions taking place throughout the Colts' roster. The Colts' training camp practices will again take place at Grand Park in Westfield, Indiana. Below are each of the training camp practices and start times that are open to the public. Philip Rivers announces retirement as member of Chargers after 17-year NFL career

Longtime Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers announced his retirement on Monday, officially ending his career after 17 seasons. The news was announced in an emotional video posted to the Chargers' social media accounts. "Thankful for those 16 years and entrusting me to be the quarterback," Rivers said during the video. "I certainly never took it for granted. Never took it for granted, getting to suit up and lead the Chargers for shoot, 240 something games in a row." Rivers spent 16 of his 17 seasons with the Bolts, before playing with the Indianapolis Colts in his final season in 2020. The majority of his career came while the team was still located in San Diego and played their games at Qualcomm Stadium, both of which earned shoutouts from Rivers during the video. His official retirement contract was delivered by four of his beloved offensive linemen — Nick Hardwick, Jeromey Clary, Marcus McNeill and Kris Dielman — who protected him during nearly all of his games with the Chargers. Rivers still holds an extensive list of franchise records for the Chargers, including games played (228), wins (123), passing yards (59,271) and passing touchdowns (397). He helped the Bolts to six playoff appearances, was an eight-time Pro Bowl selection, led the NFL in passing yards in 2010 and was the NFL Comeback Player of the Year in 2013. The New York Giants actually selected Rivers with the No. 4 pick in the 2004 NFL Draft out of NC State, but the infamous Eli Manning decision wound up in a trade that sent him to San Diego along with the draft picks that eventually became kicker Nate Kaeding and linebacker Shawne Merriman. Rivers then spent the first two seasons behind eventual Hall of Famer Drew Brees, who left the team in free agency in 2006. He wound up leading the Bolts to the playoffs and four straight AFC West titles after that, teamed up with the likes of Hall of Fame players in LaDainian Tomlison and Antonio Gates and a stellar defense, though they never advanced past the AFC Championship game. Rivers finishes his NFL career sixth all-time in passing yards (63,440) and touchdown passes (421). He is eligible for the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2026.

Philip Rivers announces retirement from football as a Charger

Former NFL star quarterback Philip Rivers has announced his retirement from football as a Charger. Rivers, 43, spent all but one of his 17 seasons with the franchise, which he leads in virtually every passing category. He played one season for the Colts in the 2020 season, which was the last time he suited up in the NFL. And while Rivers was already assumed by many to be done playing, he made things official on Monday as he re-joined the Chargers to provide an emotional update. 'It's really, in the past handful of years, been my desire [to retire] as a Charger. It was more so the timing,' Rivers told the team's website. 'Gratitude is the first thing that comes to mind. Just thankful. Thankful for my time there as a Charger.' philip rivers forever. — Los Angeles Chargers (@chargers) July 21, 2025 The quarterback gave a heartwarming video interview to the team, who wove his sit-down with highlights from his memorable career. 'There were so many highlights and fun Sundays,' Rivers added in the tribute video. 'So many. But what I miss and what I'm most appreciative and thankful for are those relationships.' Namely, the Alabama native was close with his offensive lineman, and he was surprised during the video by his former protectors Nick Hardwick, Kris Dielman, Marcus McNeill and Jeromey Clary. Rivers got emotional as his former teammates surprised him in his home, hugging each one before taking a FaceTime from Chargers president John Spanos. Spanos told 'He and I have had discussions over the last several years, ever since his first year when he wasn't playing. We had a really good conversation and there was a lot of gratitude expressed back and forth, from me personally and on the team's behalf for everything he's meant to us and all our fans as well as from him for what the Chargers mean to him. 'He made it known back then he wanted to retire a Charger, and I obviously expressed that we would love that to happen as soon as he was ready,' Spanos continued. 'I think we both knew this day was coming for a few years now, but the key thing that I expressed to Philip was that I wanted the timing to be something he was good with. He had to be ready to close that door.' Rivers was routinely considered one of the league's best quarterbacks during his career, and made eight Pro Bowls while playing for the Chargers. He's remembered by fans for the high-powered offense he formed with running back LaDainian Tomlinson, and for his spirited trash-talking during his career. Rivers' large family with his wife, Tiffany, has also become a point of fascination among NFL fans as the couple shares 10 children together. The couple shares kids Halle, Caroline, Grace, Gunner, Sarah, Peter, Rebecca, Clare, Anna and the youngest, Andrew, who was born in October 2023. Rivers posted a 5-7 record in the playoffs (the furthest he made it was the AFC Championship), and will retire from the NFL with over $243million in earnings, per Spotrac.

Fans freak over new wedding pic of Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift

A new wedding photo featuring Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift started making the rounds on social media Sunday, and fans went into a frenzy. But hold up, it's not what it looks like. Nope, they didn't get married... But the photo looks like they did The image was snapped at the June wedding of Kelce's cousin, Tanner Corum, who tied the knot with longtime partner Samantha Peck in Knoxville, Tennessee. Corum is the son of Kelce's aunt on his mother's side. In the now-viral Instagram post, Kelce and Swift are seen posing with Tanner's sister, Ashton Corum, during the ceremony. Swift wore a light blue gown, and Kelce showed up looking camera-ready, naturally leading fans to believe something bigger might be happening. Rumors started flying within minutes. Some speculated the couple was teasing a possible engagement. Others jumped straight to 'secret wedding' theories, despite clear context pointing to it being someone else's big day. Kelce and Swift have been publicly linked since she appeared at a Kansas City Chiefshttps:// game in September 2023, and they've been nearly inseparable ever since. Still, neither has commented on any wedding plans, even though every new photo sparks another round of gossip. Ashton Corum poked fun at the attention in a TikTok video, joking that she was supporting the Chiefs long before Swift joined the fanbase. So no, the couple didn't exchange vows over the weekend. But showing up together at a family wedding, dressed to impress and radiating couple energy, certainly didn't help calm the wild theories. The speculation keeps rolling. And until either Swift or Kelce sets the record straight, every appearance like this will only stir the pot more.
