Hollywood's latest nepo baby roasted by scathing viewers as he releases 'terrible' new music video
Hollywood's latest ' nepo baby ' has released a music video that had viewers spitting venom as they reacted with unbridled derision. The showbiz legacy in question is Caleb Moore Freundlich, the son of Julianne Moore and her longtime filmmaker husband Bart Freundlich. Now 27, Caleb has entered the industry himself, dropping his lesser-known surname and echoed his Oscar-winning mother with the sobriquet Caleb Moore. He has veered away from his parents' world, the movies, and become an indie musician, releasing a new single called Comeback Kid. The video consists of one shot of him walking down a city street as he complains about a lover who regards him as 'only a good time when you're not asleep.' Commenters were scathing about the 'terrible' video, cringing at the 'derivative music,' the 'weak' vocals and of course his Hollywood connections. 'Discovered by his mom! She's in the wrong biz, she should be a scout for a record label! Julienne has an ear that only a mother can have,' joked a viewer. One groaned: 'just what we need... another nepo baby,' another wondered: 'Why is he whispering... ?' and a third wrote: 'Terrible production, not genuine or memorable.' 'Nope. Weak sounding lacks vocal control,' came the verdict from another observer as an exasperated listener said: 'There are millions of better musicians .Everythingabout him is mediocre.' 'Wow,' marveled one listener. 'It pays to have to famous and wealthy parents. You can produce derivative music that has no intrinsic merit and have yourself a fine little career. Inside I'm sure he doesn't feel all that good about this.' 'Depressing,' an audience member opined, while another gasped: ' is really, really terrible. It is meant to be serious? Even his mom couldn't help this succeed.' The New York City release party for the music video included such names as Billy Crudup, who acted in the 2019 film After The Wedding directed by Caleb's father and starring Caleb's movie star mother, via Deadline. He took an auteur's approach to Comeback Kid, not only singing it but also producing, mixing, writing and mastering it himself. Caleb explained that the song was inspired by his epiphany that he had cultivated a '"keep your chin up" attitude almost to a fault.' Commenters were scathing about the 'terrible' video, cringing at the 'derivative music,' the 'weak' vocals and of course his Hollywood connections On the personal front, Caleb got engaged to his girlfriend Kibriyaá Morgan, a development Julianne celebrated by giving them a party. He is part of a glut of rising stars with famous parents, from Johnny Depp's daughter Lily-Rose Depp to Andie MacDowell's daughter Margaret Qualley. Maude Apatow, whose parents are Judd Apatow and Leslie Mann, and Kaia Gerber, whose mother is Cindy Crawford, have shot to fame in recent years as well. Madonna's daughter Lourdes Leon, Heidi Klum's daughter Leni Klum and Elvis Presley's granddaughter Riley Keough are also coming up, among others like Maya Hawke, the daughter of Uma Thurman and Ethan Hawke. The online chatter around 'nepo babies' reached a fever pitch in December 2022 after New York magazine ran a viral cover story about the phenomenon. Dakota Johnson, whose parents are Don Johnson and Melanie Griffith and whose grandmother is Hitchcock blonde Tippi Hedren, was one of the faces on the cover. Jamie Lee Curtis, the daughter of Psycho actress Janet Leigh and Some Like It Hot dreamboat Tony Curtis, then waded into the debate.

Review: It was a more poised and ready Sharon Van Etten at Salt Shed
Sharon Van Etten is ready to be front and center. Not that she hasn't been before, but perhaps the type and scope of her music made it more difficult for her to command the stage. But with her band, the Attachment Theory, as evident at Friday night's set at the Salt Shed, audiences can now witness a more confident and self-assured version of Van Etten, one who is ready and perhaps eager to embody her true rock superstardom. As a long-time fan, I wasn't quite sure what to think of this new direction, first heard on her self-titled record with her collaborative band, the Attachment Theory, released this February. But it's a pivotal moment in Van Etten's career. And it all comes together in the live show. This is not Sharon Van Etten pretending to be someone she is not. Instead, it is an artist embracing the person she was always meant to be, and doing it with a level of fun and flirty humor that encourages her audience to let loose. There was no cell phone in sight as Van Etten and the Attachment Theory entered the stage and performed the opener 'Live Forever.' A hypnotic purple light show complemented Van Etten's elegiac voice that pierced through the track's spindly synths. 'Holy moly!' Van Etten exclaimed after the audience's rapturous applause. Van Etten's enthusiasm spilled over into the next track, 'Afterlife,' where she began walking around the stage and interacting with both the band and the audience. It was a perfect fit for this new music, which has a certain vibrancy that invigorates the ear. On 'Idiot Box,' a post-punk stunner from her new record, Van Etten returned to her signature guitar. But she lets loose again on 'Comeback Kid,' from 2019's maximalist record 'Remind Me Tomorrow,' continuing to shake up the routine of her traditional stage shows. Van Etten leans into dancing. It's nothing too serious or refined but embodies a driving, propulsive energy, as if the mood of the track is running through her limbs. It's no wonder the infatuated audience began moving, too. Van Etten is as much singer-songwriter as she is frontwoman as she is band leader. And the Attachment Theory, with all of its effortless bombast, is the perfect accompaniment for this new stage in her career. Sometimes it is other people who push us in the ways we need to be pushed. If before she was often grouped in a community of millennial, indie rock singer-songwriters like Angel Olsen or Mitski, here Van Etten has proven that she is more than the assumptions of lazy music industry types who can't or won't see her for who she is. Take 'I Can't Imagine (Why You Feel This Way),' another track from her new record, a new wave-inspired sound inspired by David Byrne and the B-52s. Synth-driven and amusing, it's a sparkly and vivacious track that elicits a sparkly and vivacious performance. There were slower moments, of course. 'Trouble,' with its steady cadence and unnerving musicality, served as a nice transition before the group performed more of Van Etten's older tracks. It's easy to get swept up into the emotions of her music, whether old or new. Fan favorites like 2014's 'Every Time the Sun Comes Up' and 'Tarifa,' (which she dedicated to filmmaker David Lynch) fit perfectly with her new music. Van Etten's siren-like melodies are evocative. But more importantly, there's a throughline in this new music. It's cinematic and epic, a walloping collection of earthy soundscapes that home in on the intricacies and intimacies of life. Sometimes, that comes with a little bit of a groove and a dance, and sometimes it requires the listener to stand present and still. Either way, it's great stuff from an artist with many more surprises up her sleeve.

Must-see Twin Cities concerts this week: Justin Timberlake, FINNEAS, Nona Invie
It's time to brave the cold and see some good music. Here are the concerts and perofrmances around the Twin Cities that you should catch this week. Monday, Feb. 24 at Xcel Energy Center Justin Timberlake's 2024 record Everything I Thought It Was made a splash like an Olympic diver. It was largely glossed over in the wake of poor reviews and no single that took off. He nonetheless remains the singer of "SexyBack" and knows how to wow fans on an arena level. Timberlake was originally scheduled to play St. Paul on Halloween, but postponed a handful of shows due to bronchitis and laryngitis. Now, he's back and set lists for other dates on the tour suggest there will be a hearty helping of music from Everything I Thought It Was. But he's still leaving plenty of space for "Cry Me a River" and that song from Smurfs. Monday, Feb. 24 at Turf Club Comeback Kid — the Winnipeg-formed hardcore band that is fittingly named after a hockey headline — is celebrating the 20th anniversary of Wake the Dead, their blistering sophomore album packed with big breakdowns and chant-along choruses. It'll probably get a little rowdy. Cancer Bats, ORTHODOX, and Daisycutter open. Monday, Feb. 24 at The Dakota The trio of distinctively Hawaiian musicians — slack-key guitarists George Kahumoku Jr. and Sonny Lim with ukulelist Sonny Lim — bring their genre mastery to the Dakota this week. Their individual list of accomplishments is massive, including Grammys and honors from Hawaiian arts organizations. Thursday, Feb. 27 at The Fillmore FINNEAS, the stage name of Finneas O'Connell, collaborator and brother of Billie eilish, will take the spotlight to himself on Thursday. Despite winning 10 Grammys for his work with Eilish and being nominated for Best New Artist for his solo work (in addition to Oscar and Golden Globe wins), his collaborative work often overshadows his solo efforts. He's touring behind last year's For Cryin' Out Loud, his second full-length studio album. Friday, Feb. 28 at Berlin Nona Invie, formerly of Dark Dark Dark and RONiiA, will host the first of two album release shows for their upcoming record Self-soothing. Friday's show is a 60-minute performance of the complete album. They'll be accompanied by a choir featuring Channy Leaneagh (Poliça), Aby Wolf (Champagne Confetti), and Nadia Hulett (NADINE). Invie previewed the record with the release "Love Is Like That" recently. It's a sparse song that makes space for their sweeping vocals over ambient waves and minimalistic piano. The Feb. 28 show at Berlin is sold out, but tickets remain for the second show on March 6, also at Berlin. Friday, Feb. 28 and Saturday, Mar. 1 at Turf Club Is there a busier band in the Americana/jam world than Pert Near Sandstone? They're not just playing constantly. They're making events happening. The hosts and curators of the summertime Blue Ox Music Festival are hosting their annual, two-day Winter String Band Gathering at the Turf Club. It'll have the main stage rolling as well as performances down in the Clown Lounge. (There will also be an afterparty with sets from Barefoot Bluegrass and Potluck String Band at the Midway Slaoon.) On Friday, Pert will be joined by Dig Deep and Katey Bellville. The next night, they'll have Bronwyn Keith-Hynes and Feeding Leroy joining in the on Monday, Feb. 24: Justin Timberlake at Xcel Energy Center Comeback Kid - Wake the Dead 20-year anniversary show with Cancer Bats, ORTHODOX, and Daisycutter at Turf Club Masters of Hawaiian Music at The Dakota Gabe Terracciano Group at Berlin TH3 at Palmer's Bar Babe Corner with Creeping Charlie and Dad Bod at Icehouse Roe Family Singers at 331 Club (free) HonkyTonk Ranch at 331 Club (free) Enbahn with Kat and the Kodachromes and Tricks at The White Squirrel Bar (free) Concerts on Tuesday, Feb. 25: The Dark Horse Revue: The Music of George Harrison at The Parkway Theater Trace Bundy at The Dakota International Reggae Allstars at Bunker's Kevin Gamble Trio at Indeed Brewing Post Sex Nachos with Veaux at 7th St. Entry John Louis at 331 Club Ditch Pigeon at The White Squirrel Bar (free) Velour, Red Eye Ruby, and Izzy Cruz at 331 Club (free) Concerts on Wednesday, Feb. 26: The High Kings at The Fitzgerald Theater C.J.
