CPM ridicules CM's U-turn on smart meters
Guntur: The Communist Party of India-Marxist on Monday launched a scathing attack on the coalition government, questioning its sudden U-turn on smart electricity meters and demanding accountability for rising power tariffs. Releasing a detailed questionnaire to the Chief Minister, CPM leaders challenged the administration to explain why smart meters, once deemed 'wrong,' are now being implemented, and called for an immediate halt to what they termed 'false statements' by officials. Addressing a press conference at the CPM district office here, CPM State Secretariat member Ch Babu Rao accused the ruling coalition of changing its stance on smart meters and resorting to 'reprehensible' tactics by having officials issue false statements to avoid answering the public. He said the coalition leaders and the Chief Minister, who once called smart meters wrong, must now explain to the people how they became right. He challenged the government to clarify its stand on the smart meter and solar agreements with Adani and Shirdi Sai companies. He pointed out the apparent contradiction in replacing existing meters: 'If there's no difference between old meters and smart meters, why are 2-crore old meters being replaced. Why is Rs 25,000 crore being spent to procure them.' He demanded that the Chief Minister must speak up on smart meters and the burden of adjustment charges and fulfil his promises. He condemned the practice of collecting additional 'true-up' and adjustment charges five years after electricity consumption, a practice he described as 'outrageous' and 'unprecedented globally for any commodity.' The CPM announced its support for statewide protests against smart meters and adjustment charges on August 5 at electricity offices. CPM District Secretary Y Netaji along with secretariat members Pasam Ramarao, Nalinikanth, Bhavannarayana, Apparao, Ravi and Burugu Venkateswarlu were also present.

CPM seeks Home Minister Amit Shah's intervention to prevent harassment of Bengali-speaking migrants in Delhi
NEW DELHI: The Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPM) leaders have written to Home Minister Amit Shah seeking intervention to stop alleged violation of human rights, harassment and extortion of Bengali-speaking migrants at the hands of Delhi Police and other authorities. In the letter, the senior CPM leader and former Rajya Sabha Brinda Karat and the secretary of the Delhi State Committee, Anurag Saxena, mentioned a couple of instances of 'abuse and intimidation' from different parts of the city in the ongoing process of 'identification of illegal Bangladeshi immigrants' in Delhi. 'We have received several complaints of harassment of genuine citizens of India on the grounds that they speak Bengali…We were shocked to find blatant violations of minimum human rights, harassment and in some cases, corruption amounting to extortion… We hope you will consider these issues and intervene to restore human rights, humane behaviour of the law enforcement agencies and adequately compensate the victims for their losses,' read the communiqué. The Left party leader highlighted how the families living in Bawana, RK Puram and Chanakyapuri slums were picked and reportedly beaten up by the police personnel. 'The process of identification of illegal immigrants from Bangladesh in the capital of India is an example of violation of minimum human rights. In the process, genuine Indian citizens are being targeted on the grounds of language and religion. … There are international norms for the deportation of illegal immigrants. The present methods of identification in Delhi violate all such norms,' the leader stated. Meanwhile, the CPI (Marxist-Leninist)-Liberation (CPIML-Liberation) has also expressed solidarity with residents of Jai Hind Camp in Vasant Kunj.

CPM backs ‘Silence for Gaza'; urges digital protest against Israeli attacks
NEW DELHI: The Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPM) on Saturday urged people across the country to actively participate in 'digital protest' against Israel; switch off mobile phones for 30 minutes every day and abstain from posting, liking, or commenting on any social media platform during the protest period. Through a statement issued by the Polit Bureau, the party endorsed the global call 'Silence for Gaza', which urges people to switch off their mobile phones for half an hour everyday – from 21.00 to 21.30 local time – as a symbolic act of solidarity. A recently released UN report, From Economy of Occupation to Economy of Genocide, details how various multinational corporations are complicit in Israel's assault on Gaza. "The sinister role of these corporations must be exposed and they must be held accountable to the people," read the statement. The party said that these corporations feed off our digital footprints, even as they enable genocide. "Shutting off our mobile phones for half an hour each day at the designated time is a small but powerful act of digital disruption, a strike against the surveillance capitalism that bankrolls Israel's genocide and apartheid," the party added. The CPM said that that by joining the global 'Silence for Gaza' campaign, it stands with the Palestinian people and against the brutal, genocidal assault unleashed by Israel. "Let this collective silence be a defiant refusal to be complicit, and a powerful assertion that the voices against war crimes will not be silenced," said the Polit Bureau.

West Bengal CPI(M) leaders meet family of girl killed in Kaliganj bomb explosion
Leaders of the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M), including the party's State secretary Md. Salim, on Saturday met the family of the girl who was killed in the Kaliganj bomb explosion on June 23. Mr. Salim was accompanied by Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) State president Meenakshi Mukherjee, who met the family members. They have proclaimed their allegiance to the CPI(M). Election to the Kaliganj Assembly seat was held on June 19, and on June 23, before the results were declared, a crude bomb hurled at the house of Tammana Khatun, 9, took her life. The police have claimed that the bombs were hurled from celebratory processions. The by-election saw the Trinamool Congress candidate, Alfa Ahmed, winning the election with a margin of over 50,000 votes. Speaking at a public gathering, Mr. Salim questioned why the area had not been sanitised, and all bombs and ammunition removed, during the elections. 'I ask the local police here — there are so many police here today because we are here. Where were you when this incident happened? The authorities — SDO (Sub Divisional Magistrate), DM (District Magistrate), IC (Inspector-in-Charge) — their job is to maintain law and order in the State, following the Constitution, and conducting fair elections. They have failed massively. We are asking for a proper investigation,' the CPI(M) State secretary said. Those who threw bombs during celebratory processions were criminals, and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's government was promoting such elements, Ms. Mukherjee said. Khatun's family members said they were targeted because they were supporters of the CPI(M). The police have arrested five persons in connection with the incident. On Saturday, four more persons were arrested, taking the number of those arrested to nine. Among those arrested on Saturday were were local Trinamool leaders Gawal Sheikh, and his son Bimal Sheikh. Khatun's mother, Sabina Yasmin, has identified Mr. Sheikh as the prime accused. 'Gawal is the main mastermind here. The bomb attack happened on his orders. But there are people above him as well — the police should investigate that, too. If he is interrogated, the police will learn everything,' Ms. Yasmin said Criminals do not belong to any political party, the TMC's Krishnanagar organisational district chairman Rukbanur Rahman said. 'It doesn't matter which party someone supports. The horrific incident that occurred should be met with exemplary punishment. As a party, we demand that from the police,' Mr. Rahman said.
