Computer Science, ECE preferred choice during round 1 of engineering college admission counselling in Tamil Nadu
Computer Science and Engineering and Electronics and Communication Engineering (ECE) seem to be the streams of choice for candidates this year, as 35,125 candidates were given tentative allotment of seats after the first round of counselling for Tamil Nadu Engineering Admissions (TNEA) for the academic year 2025-26. Early trends indicated an uptick in demand for the ECE stream when compared to last year. According to R. Ashwin, an education counsellor who has been following the engineering admissions closely, ECE has overtaken IT and AI courses as a preferred choice for candidates this year, as indicated by the first round trends. In the top 10 colleges in the State, almost all seats in core engineering streams – Computer Science and Engineering, ECE, Electrical and Electronics Engineering (EEE), Mechanical Engineering, and Civil Engineering – have been filled after the first round itself, Mr. Ashwin said. What is interesting is that circuit-related courses like Computer Science and ECE were on demand even in colleges lower down the ranking list. Also, Chennai and Coimbatore remained the destinations of choice for candidates, as top colleges in these cities witnessed a spurt in preference during the first round. While the top constituent colleges in Anna University such as College of Engineering Guindy (CEG) and Madras Institute of Technology (MIT) remained top on the preference list of candidates, the various university colleges of engineering of Anna University found themselves lower down the pecking order. TNEA officials said 32,663 candidates under the general category and 2,462 candidates from the government schools (7.5% reservation) category were given tentative allotments. They will release provisional allotment order for those candidates who have confirmed their tentative allotment by Friday evening. Candidates who did not get their seat of choice and have opted for the upward option while accepting the allotment would have to wait for the residual seats after the first round of admissions get over on July 23. In the vocational stream, 1,416 candidates were given tentative allotments, including 214 from the government schools (7.5% reservation) category.

Top 10 engineering colleges in India for CSE in 2025: Rankings, placement and more
Engineering has remained one of the top academic aspirations for Indian students after Class 12 for decades. Among all engineering branches, Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) continues to attract the highest number of applicants due to the growing demand in the tech sector. One of the primary routes to enter premier engineering institutes in India is through the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE). According to official data, a total of 14,15,110 candidates appeared for JEE Main 2024. In 2025, the January session saw 13,11,544 registrations, with 12,58,136 appearing for the exam. The April 2025 session recorded 10,61,840 registrations and 9,92,350 actual test takers. Among the top choices for engineering aspirants are the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), which consistently rank high in national and global rankings. IIT Madras, in particular, has held the top position in engineering rankings for five consecutive years under NIRF. IIT Madras established its computer science division as the Computer Centre in 1973 with an IBM 370 computer system. It began offering a BTech programme in Computer Science in 1983. Today, the department has around 700 students, of whom more than 60% are pursuing postgraduate studies. The department supports PhD students through industry-sponsored fellowships and encourages international conference participation. In terms of placement, the median and average CTC for BTech in Computer Science at IIT Madras in 2024 stood at Rs 37.50 lakh and Rs 52.32 lakh respectively. For dual degree students, the figures were even higher, with both median and average packages recorded at Rs 84 lakh per annum. Founded in 1982, the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at IIT Delhi has grown into a key research and academic centre. It offers undergraduate and postgraduate courses such as Data Structures & Algorithms, Discrete Mathematical Structures, Digital Logic & System Design, and Computer Architecture. In placements, IIT Delhi's CSE students received offers from major companies like Microsoft India (R&D), Samsung R&D Noida, IBM, HCL Tech, Micron, Daimler Trucks, and QuantumStreet AI, among others. Computing activities at IIT Bombay began in 1967 with the Minsk II computer. Today, the Computer Science and Engineering department is one of the most sought-after in the country. In the last JEE session, IIT Bombay remained the top choice for admission among the highest scorers of JEE Advanced, the entrance exam for IITs. The institute shared data showing that many of the top 1,000 rankers chose IIT Bombay for their undergraduate programs. In the 2023–24 placement season, 275 students from the department registered, 254 participated, and 230 were placed. This indicates a high placement rate for students in the CSE stream. IIT Kanpur initiated computing education in 1963 with an IBM 1620 system. From 1964 to 1975, the institute conducted around 30 short courses in programming, laying the groundwork for computer science education in India. As per data released in December 2024, IIT Kanpur completed Phase-1 of the 2024–25 placement season with a total of 28 international offers, reflecting a 27% year-on-year increase. Key recruiters included Google, Microsoft, Qualcomm, Intel, Oracle, Texas Instruments, Databricks, Reliance, and American Express, among others. The Department of Computer Science and Engineering at IIT Kharagpur was established in 1980, with its first BTech batch graduating in 1982. Currently, the department has about 650 undergraduate students, 160 postgraduates, and 175 research scholars. Its research spans areas like AI/ML, cryptography, speech processing, and embedded systems. In the most recent placement cycle, IIT Kharagpur received 1,800 offers, including 409 PPOs and 25 international placements. Nine students received offers exceeding Rs 1 crore, with the highest at Rs 2.14 crore per annum. These offers came from global technology firms, reflecting strong industry engagement with the CSE department.

Round 2 of BTech admissions at DU: What's filled, What's still up for grabs
With the second round of BTech admissions at Delhi University (DU) underway, while all 120 seats in the Computer Science and Engineering programme have been filled, several seats continue to remain vacant in the Electrical Engineering as well as Electronics and Communication Engineering courses. Of the 360 seats across the three programmes, 338 have been filled so far, The Indian Express has learnt. Each of the three BTech programmes at DU – Computer Science and Engineering, Electrical Engineering, and Electronics and Communication Engineering – can accommodate 120 students. These were introduced in the 2023–24 academic session, and students are inducted on the basis of their performance in the JEE (Main) examination. After the minimum Common Rank List (CRL) cut-offs for the second round of seat allocation was issued by DU, while the Computer Science and Engineering programme has closed admissions for the year, Electrical Engineering has so far filled 76 seats while Electronics and Communication Engineering has admitted over 90 students, according to data reviewed by The Indian Express. As for the integrated law programme, which was also introduced in 2023-24 and offers 120 seats, the interest remains high. According to the admission data, over 3,425 students have registered or expressed interest in the course so far, and 1,785 of them have paid the registration fee. The university had to go up to the fifth admission list last year to fill all seats in this programme. The BTech and integrated law programmes are being offered by Delhi University's Faculty of Technology and Faculty of Law, respectively. These courses were introduced as part of the university's expansion under the National Education Policy. The admission process for both continues to run separately from the central undergraduate Common Seat Allocation System (CSAS) used for most undergraduate courses at DU. Students coming from families with an annual income of less than Rs 4 lakh are eligible for a fee waiver of up to 90% in the BTech and the five-year integrated law programmes. The university is now preparing to initiate the second phase of seat allocation across its UG courses early next week. This will be contingent on the declaration of the CUET-UG results, which are awaited. 'If the CUET results are announced this week, we expect to begin the second phase of admissions early next week. Students are advised to keep their college preferences ready,' said Haneet Gandhi, Dean of Admissions at DU.
