Myrtle Beach area doctor tied to alleged kickback scheme agrees to pay $400k to feds

A Myrtle Beach area doctor and his practices agreed to settle federal Medicare fraud allegations as part of a purported kickback scheme, the U.S. Department of Justice announced this week. Dr. Gerald Congdon and his practices, Coastal Urgent Care in Pawleys Island and Coastal Wellness Center in Myrtle Beach, agreed to pay $400,000 to resolve accusations they received thousands of dollars during 2016-2021 disguised as office space rental and phlebotomy payments from a laboratory based in Anderson, S.C., in exchange for ordering testing, a DOJ press release states. Additional details surrounding the allegations and settlement specifically with Congdon and his practices are not publicly available at this time, according to a DOJ spokeswoman. Congdon told The Sun News that the allegations were related to him subleasing available office space in his building to the laboratory company, which he had no idea was illegal until DOJ officials presented the issue to him two years ago. 'If I'd have known it wasn't allowed, I wouldn't have done it,' he said. The $400,000 he agreed to pay represented the rental income he had received from the laboratory, Congdon added. 'When the DOJ asks you for money, you give them your money,' he said. Congdon said he's been a doctor in the Myrtle Beach area for nearly 30 years, and he's confident this won't impact his positive reputation in the community. Congdon has held a SC medical license since 1997 with no disciplinary actions filed against him, online licensing records show. The settlement agreed to by Congdon and his practices were a group of settlements totaling more than $1.9 million recently announced by the DOJ that resolved allegations the parties violated the federal anti-kickback statute. The statute prohibits offering, paying, soliciting or receiving payments in exchange for referrals or services covered by Medicare and is intended to ensure medical providers' judgments aren't compromised by improper financial incentives, according to the DOJ.

Saquon Barkley's fiancée Anna Congdon is excited to see the Super Bowl through her daughter's eyes: 'This is such a special moment' (exclusive)

Saquon Barkley will play the biggest game of his life on Sunday when the Philadelphia Eagles take on the Kansas City Chiefs at Super Bowl LIX. His fiancée, Anna Congdon, will be trying to keep the vibe as laid-back as possible in New Orleans for their family. "This has easily been the most exciting season of Saquon's career," Congdon told Yahoo Entertainment. Congdon, who spoke with Yahoo as part of her WAGS in Wags Jeep campaign, said the family will have the "same game-day routine" on Sunday that's worked so well the rest of the season. No, that doesn't include partying with Eagles fans on Bourbon Street ahead of the big game. Rather, it involves getting their 2-year-old son, Saquon Jr., ("SJ") down for a nap so he can actually make it to the Superdome to watch his dad play in the Super Bowl. "Our whole schedule for the day will probably revolve around that," she laughed. "I have my job and my duties as a mom that I need to do, and then [Saquon] has his jobs and his duties that he needs to do [for his team]. I think that we're able to find a good balance and support each other through that process." Congdon and Barkley, who also share daughter, Jada, 6, met at Penn State University and have been together since 2017. They got engaged several months ago, but it was publicly announced in the press only recently. Congdon said she keeps certain boundaries over what she does and doesn't share on social media. "In college, I was pretty much posting everything and was comfortable with that. Then, once we had our children, you start to experience things and you're like, 'OK, this doesn't feel right.' People shouldn't know everything about your children and everything about your life," she said. "I truly just try to keep almost as much as possible private because you need it for your peace of mind. To me, it's my one way of just keeping my kids safe and keeping our family safe." One critique Congdon has to laugh at? "So many people come at me for always wearing my glasses," she said. WAG — that's short for wives and girlfriends — fashion has exploded on social media as fans want to get a glimpse of their favorite football stars' personal lives. While some have embraced Congdon's fashion sense, she has a message for haters about her eyewear: "I literally can't wear contacts because they don't fit my eyes!" "I always try to work my outfit around my glasses and the other accessories," she said, adding that her look for the Super Bowl will be no different. "I'm honestly keeping it pretty simple." Congdon arrived in New Orleans on Friday with her kids and will be riding in style in a Jeep Wagoneer. "We'll have the car seats, the strollers, lots of luggage. ... As a mom, these are the real things that end up exciting me," she said. The Barkley crew plans to roll "squad deep" on Sunday with their entire family and their closest friends. "Nobody wants to miss it," Congdon said. One thing Congdon's most excited about is witnessing Super Bowl LIX through her daughter's eyes. "This is just such a special moment," she said. "[Jada] will actually remember this, and for her to go into school on Tuesday and be able to say that your dad just played in the Super Bowl and is a Super Bowl champion, that just would be the coolest moment ever."

Officials waiting on engineer's report on vacated building

Jan. 28—CONNEAUT — Local officials are still waiting on a final engineers report on a Main Street building vacated earlier this month, according to Conneaut City Manager Nick Sanford and Ashtabula County Building Safety Inspector Thomas Congdon. The building had been ordered vacated after the county and city found roof damage, which could have spread to the whole building. The Main Street building houses a State Farm Office, Cricket Wireless and Community Counseling Center. Those businesses have either had to shut down, operate remotely or move locations since the vacate order. The CCC was where the roof damage was first noticed. Amayah Investors LLC, the contractors the building owners' brought in, worried about the damage. From there, local officials also came in and put out the order. There was major sagging in CCC's ceiling, Conneaut Fire Chief Steve Lee said at the time. Congdon said he had speculated the damage came from snowmelt, especially from the Thanksgiving weekend snowstorm. The engineer's report will establish a cause for the damage, and how dangerous it is to the rest of the building. Congdon said whatever the next steps are depends on what the engineer's report says. What the engineer's report finds will affect when the businesses will reopen. The CCC directed Conneaut residents to call or reach out to its Ashtabula office if they needed help. At the time, the CCC looked for a temporary headquarters in Conneaut as well. The State Farm Office is headed by insurance agent Chris Brecht, who said he and his employees have adapted to working remotely. "We're getting by just fine, until they can come up with a plan for what to do," he said. Brecht said employees have also been able to take calls out just fine. The State Farm office is relying on a secure night box for its payments and mail, he said. "People can drop payments off," Brecht said. The Cricket Wireless shut its doors because of the order.
