‘Assam Cong's turf, even produced CM for BJP', Kharge mocks Himanta
Guwahati: Assam is a bastion of Congress and even produced a chief minister of BJP-led govt, AICC president Mallikarjun Kharge quipped, pointing towards CM Himanta Biswa Sarma , on Wednesday. Addressing a rally at Chaygaon near Guwahati, Kharge said the BJP had struggled for decades to form a govt in Assam, but they could not do it on its own. "In order to form a BJP govt, they had to borrow one person from Congress and made him chief minister," Kharge said, referencing Sarma. He said the RSS had been trying to form a govt in Assam since 1940, but one person 'ran away' from Congress and is now the CM of Assam. Sarma served as a cabinet minister in the Congress-led govt in Assam for years before resigning and joining the BJP in 2015 over differences with then CM Tarun Gogoi and Congress leadership. Kharge said Congress has charted a strong plan for Assam ahead of the 2026 assembly elections, adding that newly appointed Assam PCC president Gaurav Gogoi will play a major role. "Despite being deputy leader of the Congress in Lok Sabha, he (Gaurav Gogoi) agreed to take charge at Rahulji's request," Kharge said. He alleged that Sarma has betrayed everyone, infused fear in all, and restorted to the 'highest loot' in the country. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Đây có thể là thời điểm tốt nhất để giao dịch vàng trong 5 năm qua IC Markets Tìm hiểu thêm Undo The Congress president has assured all efforts to provide jobs to the youths, if Congress returns to power in Assam. He alleged that there is a loan burden of Rs 2 lakh crore on the people of Assam and blamed the 10 years of BJP rule for this. "If development is taking place and the govt has money, why such a huge burden of loan on the people of the state?" Kharge questioned. On eviction drives in the state, Kharge said Congress would rebuild the homes of displaced people and bring wrongdoers to justice. "The wrongdoers should make conditions of prisons better because they will have to stay there," he added. Gaurav Gogoi said, "Rahulji's message is clear. We will have to fight this time. There is nothing to fear. If someone is in fear, he is Himanta Biswa Sarma."

'Man who ran away from Congress is now Assam's CM': Kharge takes jibe at Himanta Biswa Sarma; slams PM's five-nation tour
, the Congress president, took a jibe at Assam chief minister on Wednesday, claiming that the grand old party had to lend its member so that the could form a government in the state. During a party workers' gathering on his one-day visit to the state, Kharge stated, "The BJP had been trying to form the government in Assam for decades, but were not able to do so. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now It was only after borrowing a member from us and making him the chief minister, they could form their own government. " "The man who ran away from the Congress is now the chief minister of Assam," he added. Prior to joining the BJP in 2015, Sarma served as a minister in the Congress-led Assam government. Kharge condemned Himanta Biswa Sarma's recent statement about pig rearing as a means to protect land from a specific religious group, stating, "The CM is spreading venom with such remarks. The law and order is under you, and you are saying such things." The Congress president accused the current BJP government in Assam of substantial corruption and declared, "Those who have wronged people will be sent to jail. They should repair prisons now, as they will have to stay there." Addressing the BJP's claims of progress under their dual governance at national and state levels, the Congress leader remarked, "What we saw today is that to travel 30 km from Guwahati, it took us two hours. Is this the development this government claims?" He stated that Assam's residents were facing intimidation under the pretext of identifying illegal immigrants, and expressed confidence that voters would respond appropriately to the BJP-led administration in the upcoming election. The Congress president criticised the BJP regarding a recent Gir cows allocation controversy, stating that whilst they claim to worship cows, they have proven to be 'cow thieves' in this instance. He noted that despite media intimidation, whilst some might retreat due to such pressure, others who remain undaunted will support the public. He warned that the BJP administration might employ strategies like voter list modifications and constituency delimitation against Congress in Assam, and advised party members to remain watchful. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Kharge outlined that a Congress government would ensure children's education, employment for Assam's youth and optimal wages for tea garden workers. He cautioned that Dalits, SC, ST and OBC communities need to be vigilant, as their reservations could be eliminated by the central BJP government. Criticising Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Kharge pointed out his five-nation tour whilst failing to spare two hours for troubled Manipur. He remarked on Modi's recent distribution of appointment letters, noting that leaders like "Jawaharlal Nehru, Lal Bahadur Shastri, Indira Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi, Narasimha Rao or their own Vajpayee" never engaged in such activities. He emphasised that national security should be the Prime Minister's primary focus. Kharge questioned the BJP's legacy, comparing it to Nehru's era of establishing major factories and PSUs, suggesting the current government lacks memorable achievements. He accused Modi of enabling his associates to exploit the poor whilst securing benefits for himself and his party. He stressed the importance of collective action to preserve the Constitution. He stated that the Constitution underpins democracy, accusing RSS and BJP of attempting to alter it. Kharge encouraged party workers to unite under new state president Gaurav Gogoi to defeat the current government in the upcoming election.

Goa Cong asks AICC to act against Aldona MLA for anti-party conduct
Panaji: Congress has written to the AICC seeking 'urgent' disciplinary action against its Aldona MLA, Carlos Ferreira, for anti-party conduct. State Congress president Amit Patkar said Ferreira's actions send a 'distressing and demoralising message' to Congress supporters. Patkar's main grievance appears to be Ferreira's decision to attend former BJP minister Nilesh Cabral's birthday celebrations on July 10, apart from his attendance at BJP and govt events. 'Ferreira chose not to attend the Congress-led initiative but appeared without hesitation at a BJP event in the same constituency,' he said. This is not the first time state Congress has complained about the actions of its Aldona MLA. In Dec 2023, it wrote to the then AICC Goa desk in charge, Manickam Tagore, complaining of a 'consistent pattern of anti-party actions' by Ferreira. This time, Patkar has written to AICC in charge of Goa, Manikrao Thakare, and AICC secretary in charge of Goa, Anjali Nimbalkar. 'I have got the letter, but I have not read it in detail. Once I do that, I shall decide on the merits,' said Thakare. The development is likely to create additional fissures within the opposition ranks ahead of the monsoon session of the assembly. There has been strong criticism about the lack of unity between GFP and Congress, two parties that contested the last elections together and have spoken about battling BJP in unison.

Horse trading of MLAs within Congress has begun, says K'taka BJP
Bengaluru: Amid the leadership row within the Congress government in Karnataka, the State BJP unit, on Wednesday, alleged that the horse trading of MLAs within the grand old party has begun. Speaking to reporters in Bengaluru, State BJP President B.Y. Vijayendra said: "People are already witnessing that the Congress MLAs are frustrated in the state. They are directionless and do not have clue on whom to support. They are in confusion on whether to support Chief Minister Siddaramaiah or Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar." "The horse trading is being done in full speed within the Congress. It is clearly evident," he added. "Why is the Congress National General Secretary and party's Karnataka In-Charge Randeep Singh Surjewala making repeated visits to Karnataka and meeting his party MLAs? What does it mean? This shows that Congress MLAs have lost confidence in CM Siddaramaiah. As a result, Surjewala is making trips to Bengaluru and convincing them. Surjewala is also giving warning to the Chief Minister," Vijayendra said. Criticising Surjewala's visit to Bengaluru, the Leader of the Opposition R. Ashoka asked, "Has "Randeep rule" been imposed in the state?" "Will Thursday's Cabinet meeting also be chaired by Surjewala? With the Congress High Command having completely lost faith in lottery CM Siddaramaiah, it has imposed a "Randeep rule" in Karnataka," he said. At the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee office and five-star hotels, Randeep Singh Surjewala is hearing out complaints and grievances from disgruntled MLAs and reviewing the performance of Ministers. So, if he shows up at the Vidhana Soudha on Thursday and ends up presiding over the Cabinet meeting as well, it shouldn't come as a surprise," Ashoka added. "Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has no grip over the administration, Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar lacks support from MLAs, and Rahul Gandhi has no power to appoint the person he wants as CM," the BJP leader said. Nikhil Kumaraswamy, JD-S leader and son of Union Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy hit out at the Congress-led state government, saying: "Congratulations to Randeep Singh Surjewala, who has taken charge as the Super CM of Karnataka." "The elected Chief Minister has given him a GPA to run the government in Karnataka. Congress MLAs, who were democratically elected, are now approaching Surjewala for the development of their Assembly constituencies," he said. "CM Siddaramaiah is on his way out, Deputy CM D.K. Shivakumar is waiting for the chair, but Surjewala is already running the administration," he added. "The Congress has turned Karnataka into a puppet state, mocking both the federal structure and democracy," he said.

Reduce number of voters per polling booth for local body elections: V.D. Satheesan
Leader of the Opposition V.D. Satheesan has urged the State Election Commission to urgently address issues related to polling booths before publishing the final voters' lists for the upcoming local body elections in Kerala. Mr. Satheesan placed the demands and apprehensions of the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) regarding the arrangements for the elections at a meeting with A. Shajahan, State Election Commissioner and Chairman of the State Delimitation Commission, here on Wednesday. Mr. Satheesan urged the State Election Commission to come up practical solutions in the matter of the polling booths. The number of voters per booth needs to be revised from from 1,300 to 1,100 in the panchayats and from 1,600 to 1,300 in municipalities. Since each voter has to cast three votes, large numbers of voters per booth would create problems, Mr. Satheesan said. There are also complaints that, even after delimitation, voters would be forced to travel more than eight km to access polling booths. The Commission should make arrangements for multiple booths in such locations, he said. The UDF also demanded the Commission to rectify anomalies and guideline violations in the draft notifications on ward delimitation in local bodies.
