BJP targets Congress after Mallikarjun Kharge recalls '99 CM 'missed chance'
Mallikarjun Kharge (File photo) BENGALURU: Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge 's revelation that he was "denied" the Karnataka chief minister's post in 1999 has reignited debate over Dalit representation in the state's politics and triggered a sharp political crossfire. Kharge said Sunday at a public event in Dharwad that he was passed over for the top post despite leading Congress Legislature Party during the 1999 assembly elections. SM Krishna was chosen instead. Kharge's comment drew immediate backlash from BJP and cautious responses from his own party. "Kharge has now demanded to be made chief minister to clear a debt owed to him," said BJP's R Ashoka. "He's timed it perfectly - like hitting a ripe mango with a stone." Ashoka also took a swipe at the Congress brass, especially the Gandhi family, for sidelining Dalit politicians, and pointed out that Siddaramaiah, a JDS import, was made chief minister while Kharge, a lifelong Congress loyalist, was not. BJP state president BY Vijayendra said Kharge had publicly expressed his "pain and disappointment," and accused Congress and its brass of doing injustice to Dalits. "Kharge has worked for 40-50 years. His remarks show how Congress, the Gandhi family, and Siddaramaiah have sidelined SC/ST communities," Vijayendra said.

MP assembly session from Monday; Cong lines up several issues to corner govt
Singhar chaired a meeting of the Congress Legislature Party (CLP) on Sunday to finalise the party's strategy for the session. Bhopal, July 27 (PTI) The Congress will try to put the Madhya Pradesh government on mat on issues ranging from corruption to displacement of tribals during the monsoon session of the assembly beginning Monday, opposition leader Umang Singhar said. The Congress will raise the displacement of tribals from land and rights of Dalits, 'scams' in recruitment exams, farmers' distress, women's safety, unemployment, drug abuse, and fertiliser shortage in the House. The party will also demand restoring the 27 per cent OBC reservation by lifting the 13 per cent cap, he added. Singhar told legislators that corruption peaked under the BJP government. The list of scams is growing, but instead of taking action, the government is trying to suppress the voice of the opposition, filing false cases and diverting people's attention from issues concerning them, a party statement said. Congress Working Committee member Kamleshwar Patel, Deputy Leader of Opposition Hemant Katare and senior legislators attended the meeting. Stop eviction drives conducted sans due process, CLP urges guv
1 2 3 Guwahati: Assam's Congress Legislature Party (CLP) members on Saturday met governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya at the Raj Bhawan here and submitted a memorandum seeking his intervention to halt the ongoing and proposed eviction drives allegedly affecting indigenous, tribal, and erosion-displaced communities. In their memorandum, the opposition members said "The incidents of eviction transgresse the provisions of the Forest Rights Act 2006, the Panchayats (Extension to the Scheduled Areas) Act, 1996 (PESA 1996), Chapter X (Protect Land Rights in Tribal Belts/Blocks) of the Assam Land and Revenue Regulation, 1886, Assam (Temporarily Settled Tenancy Areas) Act 1971 and landmark decisions by the Supreme Court." The CLP delegation also demanded that an independent commission of inquiry be constituted for probe into all evictions conducted since 2022, with a special focus on Sixth Schedule districts and tribal belt and block protections. "Direct the Govt of Assam to publish a comprehensive land rights regularisation policy, clearly distinguishing long-settled indigenous occupants from speculative encroachers," they said in the memorandum, added that legal and humane rehabilitation measures must be ensured in line with constitutional morality and India's obligations under the UN Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights. "The people of Assam — especially its tribals, erosion-displaced citizens, and indigenous communities — look to your office as the constitutional conscience of the state. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo These eviction drives, conducted without due process or consent in the name of "development", threaten to dispossess the very people whose land rights the Constitution seeks to uphold," the memorandum read. They also submitted a "People's Charter for Humane and Lawful Eviction Policy in Assam" which "outlines urgent reforms that uphold constitutional values, protect marginalised communities, and promote accountability". The charter includes establishment of a state-wide eviction protocol, mandatory rehabilitation and resettlement framework, suspension of all evictions without due process, setting up of a legal aid and grievance redress platform and creation of a multi-stakeholder eviction review board.

Wadettiwar Slams Govt Over ‘Empty Promises', Demands Loan Waiver for Farmers
Nagpur: Congress Legislature Party leader Vijay Wadettiwar on Friday launched a sharp attack against the BJP-led Maharashtra govt, accusing it of deceiving farmers with unfulfilled promises and reduced compensation. He demanded the immediate implementation of a blanket loan waiver and said, "Farmers don't want any more committees. They want justice." Speaking in the Legislative Assembly on a proposal concerning agrarian issues, the Bramhapuri MLA said that the govt had slashed previously announced compensation rates after the election. "Before elections, it promised Rs13,500 per hectare for dry crops, Rs27,000 for irrigated land, and Rs36,000 for orchards, with an eligibility cap of 3 hectares. Now they've quietly reduced it to Rs8,500, Rs17,000 and Rs22,000 respectively with a 2-hectare limit," he said. Referring to the govt's pre-poll pledge of full loan waivers, Wadettiwar questioned why a committee was now being proposed. "Where is the waiver you promised? If you meant to form a committee later, why did you not say so in your manifesto?" he asked. Criticising the state's agriculture minister for 'repeatedly insulting farmers', Wadettiwar added, "He says the agriculture department is like a powerless village chiefdom. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Why seniors are rushing to get this Internet box – here's why! He also demanded that the state ensure fair minimum support prices for soybean and rice, which he alleged were currently being sold below cost. "Farmers haven't received paddy payments. They're struggling. Inputs like fertilisers and pesticides have become expensive, while the MSP is stagnant. You give Rs6,000 through PM-Kisan and then hike input prices. What kind of relief is that?" Wadettiwar asked. Taking aim at what he described as govt hypocrisy, he added, "You waive corporate loans and subsidise mega projects but turn a blind eye to dying farmers. Is your compassion only reserved for industrialists?"
