NYT Connections Today: Tuesday, July 29 Hints And Answers (#779)
Find the links between the words to win today's game of Connections. Each day's game of NYT Connections goes live at midnight local time. Before we get to today's Connections hints and answers, here are Monday's: Hey there, Connectors! I hope your week is off to a stellar start. My partner and I are planning to be together for the long-term and so we've naturally broached the topic of marriage a few times. We have a general idea that if we do tie the knot, we'll probably have two small weddings: one in Montreal and one in Scotland. That'll make it much easier for all our family and friends we want to be there to attend. We're not in any rush, but we're at least thinking about it. While we were talking on the phone the other night, I said I had to share something important. I'd been thinking about for a long time. It was a non-negotiable. I told her I needed to have a Lord of the Rings-themed wedding. The response was about six seconds of silence, followed by an 'O…kaaaaay.' Then me laughing and telling her I was only kidding. Then her laughing. I have absolutely nothing at all against anyone who wants to have a theme wedding, as long as everyone is on board. Do whatever makes you happy! I do like The Lord of the Rings, but I'm very far from being a super fan or anything like that. I just knew that my partner does not care about that stuff at all. I figured it would be a fun little prank. And I think it was. Before we begin, we have a great little community on Discord, where we chat about NYT Connections, the rest of the NYT games and all kinds of other stuff. Everyone who has joined has been lovely. It's a fun hangout spot, and you're more than welcome to hang out with us. Discord is also the best way to give me any feedback about the column, especially on the rare (or not-so-rare) occasions that I mess something up. I don't look at the comments or Twitter much. You can also read my weekend editions of this column at my new newsletter, Pastimes. Today's NYT Connections hints and answers for Tuesday, July 29 are coming right up. How To Play Connections Connections is a free, popular New York Times daily word game. You get a new puzzle at midnight every day. You can play on the NYT's website or Games app. You're presented with a grid of 16 words. Your task is to arrange them into four groups of four by figuring out the links between them. The groups could be things like items you can click, names for research study participants or words preceded by a body part. There's only one solution for each puzzle, and you'll need to be careful when it comes to words that might fit into more than one category. You can shuffle the words to perhaps help you see links between them. Each group is color coded. The yellow group is usually the easiest to figure out, blue and green fall in the middle, and the purple group is usually the most difficult one. The purple group often involves wordplay. Select four words you think go together and press Submit. If you make a guess and you're incorrect, you'll lose a life. If you're close to having a correct group, you might see a message telling you that you're one word away from getting it right, but you'll still need to figure out which one to swap. If you make four mistakes, it's game over. Let's make sure that doesn't happen with the help of some hints, and, if you're really struggling, today's Connections answers. As with Wordle and other similar games, it's easy to share results with your friends on social media and group chats. If you have an NYT All Access or Games subscription, you can access the publication's Connections archive. This includes every previous game of Connections, so you can go back and play any of those that you have missed. Aside from the first 60 games or so, you should be able to find our hints Google if you need them! Aw man, I thought I was off to a quick start by grouping together FOLD, CHECK, DEAL and CALL. I figured RAISE would go with promotion. But no. I was caught in a trap, like the fool that I sometimes am. I was one away from a group, though, so I was onto something. Then I realized that it was actually DEAL that would go with PROMOTION, as well as SPECIAL and SALE. That got me the yellows. RAISE then went with the rest of the blues. I thought those would be the greens. After that, I suspected that BUG and NETTLE might go together in a group of things that sting. STEAM and FIST (as in a stinging blow) made sense, but I was one away from a group. I swapped out STEAM for IRON, but that was wrong. Not close to a group there. After a long, long break to clear my mind and try to keep my streak intact, I came back to the puzzle with fresh eyes. I realized that BRAKES and IRON (as in lifting weights) are both things you can pump. FIST and GAS made sense with those and I had the purples. NETTLE and STEAM aren't really words I'd think of as meaning "irritate," but BUG and RUFFLE hinted at that, so I did eventually figure out the green connection. A close call this time around, but that's win number 153 in a row for yours truly. Here's my grid for today: 🟦🟨🟦🟦 🟨🟨🟨🟨 🟦🟦🟦🟦 🟩🟪🟩🟩 🟩🟪🟪🟩 🟪🟪🟪🟪 🟩🟩🟩🟩 That's all there is to it for today's Connections clues and answers. Be sure to check my blog tomorrow for hints and the solution for Wednesday's game if you need them. P.S. Given the purple category, I am very tempted to recommend Electric Callboy's "Pump It," which is genuinely one of the funniest songs I've ever heard. The video is a very amusing riff on all those '80s workout videos, so I'll go with a song from that era instead. For your Tuesday listening pleasure here is "Girls Just Want To Have Fun" by Cyndi Lauper. I've no idea why it popped into my head right now, but it's a fantastic song nonetheless: Have a great day! Stay hydrated! Be kind to yourself and each other! Call someone you love! Please follow my blog for more coverage of NYT Connections and other word games, and even some video game news, insights and analysis. It helps me out a lot! Sharing this column with other people who play Connections would be appreciated too. You can also read my weekend editions of this column at my new newsletter, Pastimes.

NYT Connections Today: Thursday, July 24 Hints And Answers (#774)
Find the links between the words to win today's game of Connections. Each day's game of NYT Connections goes live at midnight local time. Before we get to today's Connections hints and answers, here are Wednesday's: Hey there, Connectors! I hope you're having a wonderful week. I've been struggling to focus on playing video games lately, which is a bit of an issue when I write about such things for a living. I definitely haven't been playing as much as usual over the last six weeks or so. But I think that's okay. We all need to take a break from a thing we're passionate about once in a while. It helps us to see them again in a fresh light when the time is right. In the interim, I've still been covering video game news. A couple of months ago, I started doing a weekly roundup of indie game news and updates over at Engadget. It's been really fun to be able to devote a chunk of my time each week to exploring projects that myself or my colleagues might not otherwise have the bandwidth to write about, and then to shine a spotlight on them. The only real issue is that, when I'm ready to play a bunch of games again, I now have an even more daunting backlog of titles to check out. A fun problem to have, though! Before we begin, we have a great little community on Discord, where we chat about NYT Connections, the rest of the NYT games and all kinds of other stuff. Everyone who has joined has been lovely. The New York pro athletes – GIANT, JET, KNICK and NET (as in individual players for the New York Giants, New York Jets, New York Knicks and Brooklyn Nets) – jumped out right away, but the basketball terms made me think those were a red herring. Still, I wasn't sure about either of those, so I went for the words that meant "big" first. That took care of the yellows. I took a bit of a gamble with the basketball hardware words, since those made more sense together than including BOUNCE. Blues, done! (Seems weird to have this just a couple of weeks after we had a group of basketball moves?) JET, BOUNCE, SPILT and DIP were all synonyms for "leave" so I assumed those had to be the greens. But, me being me, I had to submit the purple words first. As I looked at those, I figured they had to be soundalikes for words meaning to acquire something illicitly – steal (STEEL), loot (LUTE), nick (KNICK) and rob (RABE). Not sure about that last one, but I'm going with it. I got that connection correct (though I struggled to think of a decent hint for it!). I then submitted the greens to wrap things up. Another perfect game today. That extends my streak to 148 wins. Two away from another big milestone! Here's my grid for this one: 🟨🟨🟨🟨 🟦🟦🟦🟦 🟪🟪🟪🟪 🟩🟩🟩🟩 That's all there is to it for today's Connections clues and answers. Be sure to check my blog tomorrow for hints and the solution for Friday's game if you need 'em. P.S. I heard this song on the radio the other day. I can't remember the last time I heard it, and I'd wager the same holds true for you too. It's an all-time classic: Have a great day! Stay hydrated! Be kind to yourself and each other! Why Amphenol (APH) Could Beat Earnings Estimates Again
If you are looking for a stock that has a solid history of beating earnings estimates and is in a good position to maintain the trend in its next quarterly report, you should consider Amphenol (APH). This company, which is in the Zacks Electronics - Connectors industry, shows potential for another earnings beat. When looking at the last two reports, this maker of fiber-optic products has recorded a strong streak of surpassing earnings estimates. The company has topped estimates by 15.58%, on average, in the last two quarters. For the most recent quarter, Amphenol was expected to post earnings of $0.63 per share, but it reported $0.52 per share instead, representing a surprise of 21.15%. For the previous quarter, the consensus estimate was $0.5 per share, while it actually produced $0.55 per share, a surprise of 10.00%. Price and EPS Surprise Thanks in part to this history, there has been a favorable change in earnings estimates for Amphenol lately. In fact, the Zacks Earnings ESP (Expected Surprise Prediction) for the stock is positive, which is a great indicator of an earnings beat, particularly when combined with its solid Zacks Rank. Our research shows that stocks with the combination of a positive Earnings ESP and a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold) or better produce a positive surprise nearly 70% of the time. In other words, if you have 10 stocks with this combination, the number of stocks that beat the consensus estimate could be as high as seven. The Zacks Earnings ESP compares the Most Accurate Estimate to the Zacks Consensus Estimate for the quarter; the Most Accurate Estimate is a version of the Zacks Consensus whose definition is related to change. The idea here is that analysts revising their estimates right before an earnings release have the latest information, which could potentially be more accurate than what they and others contributing to the consensus had predicted earlier. Amphenol currently has an Earnings ESP of +0.32%, which suggests that analysts have recently become bullish on the company's earnings prospects. This positive Earnings ESP when combined with the stock's Zacks Rank #2 (Buy) indicates that another beat is possibly around the corner. We expect the company's next earnings report to be released on July 23, 2025. Investors should note, however, that a negative Earnings ESP reading is not indicative of an earnings miss, but a negative value does reduce the predictive power of this metric. Many companies end up beating the consensus EPS estimate, though this is not the only reason why their shares gain. Additionally, some stocks may remain stable even if they end up missing the consensus estimate. Because of this, it's really important to check a company's Earnings ESP ahead of its quarterly release to increase the odds of success. Make sure to utilize our Earnings ESP Filter to uncover the best stocks to buy or sell before they've reported. Want the latest recommendations from Zacks Investment Research? Spoiler alert! Don't scroll any further down the page until you're ready to find out today's Connections answers. This is your final warning! Today's Connections answers are... With absolutely zero hesitation, not even pausing for a second to consider whether they might be a red herring, I guessed a group of SPORTY, GINGER, BABY and SCARY – the nicknames of four of the Spice Girls. I am a '90s kid. I am duty bound to form a guess with those. Alas, those did not form a group. I was not one away either. But I am okay with that. I will take the deserved L and be happy with it. But hey, I still had three lives remaining and a puzzle to solve. I figured that SPORTY might be a reference to a car and quickly found three other words that made sense. I don't care much about cars, but something must have stuck in my brain from those times I watched Top Gear way back when. The yellows (or are they blues?) were up next. The grid bunched BABY, ICE and POWDER together, making them easy to spot. There was something about JOLLY and MISTER that caught my eye. For some reason, "roger" popped into my head. That made sense, given the JOLLY Roger flag and MISTER (Fred) Rogers of Mister Rogers' Neighborhood fame. Actors GINGER Rogers and ROY Rogers worked with those too, and thus I had the blues. I couldn't make head nor tail of the purple group, which is a little ironic, given that my only inkling was that it had something to do with fish or seafood (BELLED = "jellied" eel? I really don't know). But no, it was a little more abstract than that! I do know all of these, by the way, since they refer to characters from Disney's legendary early '90s run – perhaps the Spice Girl nicknames were a subtle hint in that direction? Anyway, here's what they refer to: An excellent puzzle today, I thought. I didn't get a perfect game this time, but that's my 139th win on the spin. Here's my grid for today: 🟩🟦🟨🟪 🟩🟩🟩🟩 🟨🟨🟨🟨 🟦🟦🟦🟦 🟪🟪🟪🟪 That's all there is to it for today's Connections clues and answers. Be sure to check my blog tomorrow for hints and the solution for Friday's game if you need them. P.S. I mean, what else could today's song recommendation possibly be other than this: Well, and this: And one more, because why not (although we'll have have to pretend one very, very ill-advised lyric never happened): Look, I like Spice Girls, okay? NYT ‘Connections' Hints For Tuesday, July 8: Today's Clues And Answers
Find the links between the words to win today's game of Connections. Each day's game of NYT Connections goes live at midnight local time. Before we get to today's Connections hints and answers, here are Monday's: Hey there, Connectors! I hope you've had a great start to your week. I'll be honest, as someone who works remotely and probably a bit more than I need to, I spend too much time at my desk. I don't get out as much as I should. While I have a nice, powerful PC that I use for work and gaming (which is also work much of the time), I also have a great laptop. So I've finally taken that big, bold step of bringing that portable computer outside with me and doing some work while getting fresh air. I have a good spot for the time being – it's in the shade until mid-afternoon – and the laptop's battery has a large enough capacity to keep me going for a full work day, even when the screen's at its brightest. With my water bottle, phone, a strong Wi-Fi connection and noise-cancelling earphones, I have all I need. It's quite nice to be outside. I should do that more often. My first thought was that (Sabrina) CARPENTER and (John) LEGEND might be part of a group of singers, but I didn't immediately see anything else that would make sense with those. SCALE, KEY and LEGEND could have been a red herring of map-related things too. The blues were easy enough, though. I thought those would be the greens at most. The yellows were next after I drew a link between AFFAIR and THING in that weirdo brain of mine. I then realized that I was on kind of the right path with John LEGEND, but not in the sense of singers. There were three other Johns on the board, with actor CANDY, filmmaker CARPENTER (having THING on the grid was a fun reference to him) and former U.K. prime minister MAJOR. That took care of the purples. I didn't really clock the connection for the greens. But I don't mind at all since that was a perfect game and my 133rd win in a row. Here's my grid for today: 🟦🟦🟦🟦 🟨🟨🟨🟨 🟪🟪🟪🟪 🟩🟩🟩🟩 That's all there is to it for today's Connections clues and answers. Be sure to check my blog tomorrow for hints and the solution for Wednesday's game if you need them. P.S. I think Olivia Rodrigo is fantastic. Not only do I really enjoy her own music, I love that she has such interesting choices in covers (um, Fontaines DC?? Hello???) and invites some rad guests to perform with her live. During her Glastonbury headline set, she brought the legendary Robert Smith on stage to perform two songs of his, 'Friday I'm In Love' and my favorite track by The Cure, 'Just Like Heaven.' It's a lovely performance: Have a great day! Stay hydrated! Be kind to yourself and each other! Call someone you love!
