Old guard of O'Callaghan and Kilkenny inspire Dublin to a nervy win to finish second
Dublin 0-22 Derry 0-20 IN THE END Derry were desperately trying to win the ball back having given everything to the cause. But Dublin could count on their old warhorses of Ciaran Kilkenny and Con O'Callaghan to drag whatever is left of the glory days into a home draw for next weekend's preliminary quarter-final of the All-Ireland football championship. Across the first three minutes, Derry barely got to feel the weight of the football at all. In that time, Dublin went 0-4 to 0-0 up. From the throw-in, Peader ÓCofaigh-Byrne caught it over the head of Conor Glass. Con O'Callaghan was waiting on the sideline across from the stand and joined in unmarked to run it in and punch over. Dublin broke the Derry kickout and Killian McGinnis, with his paternal connections to Derry, pointed. While Ciaran McFaul caught the next kickout, a free was given to Dublin and Cormac Costello opened his account into the goals where Dublin fans had set up a mini Hill 16. At this signal, they opened their throats with a lusty strain of 'You boys in blue.' And on the next McKinless restart, Paddy Small was played in. The goal beckoned and he drilled his shot too high. They could have gone even further ahead with a Costello shot dropped short and then Stephen Cluxton dropped a '45' short, and from this play Conor Glass opened Derry's scoring on six minutes. Eventually, Derry got to grips with the assignment. ÓCofaigh-Byrne was winning anything that was coming his way and in Ciaran Kilkenny, Stephen Cluxton was spoiled for kickout options, losing only one of his first half restarts which broke to Conor Doherty. Peader ÓCofaigh-Byrne claims a kickout. Evan Logan / INPHO Evan Logan / INPHO / INPHO How Derry came back was through a manic workrate from Conor Glass, Doherty and the half-forward line of Ethan Doherty, Paul Cassidy and Ciaran McFaul. Elsewhere, Brendan Rogers produced a couple of huge turnovers and found his stride in his marking job against O'Callaghan. Above all though, they had their accuracy to thank with Shane McGuigan finding his mark for three two-points frees in the first half to add to his point from play and two single frees. The final play of the half was McGuigan landing his third two-point free. Glass had been fouled deep in the Derry half, the Dublin swarm did not retreat in time and referee Brendan Cawley brought the ball up. Advertisement The successful kick left the sides tied at 0-13 each at the break with Cawley getting a hot reception from the Dubs fans on the terrace backing into the changing rooms. From the throw-in again, Dublin repeated the dose with ÓCofaigh-Byrne fielding and O'Callaghan pointing. Dublin had a strong patch then that 0-7 in the first 11 minutes of the second half. Their dominance was helped by the amount of possession they could rely on. If ÓCofaigh-Byrne wasn't the target, then Kilkenny and Brian Howard were offering up themselves to Stephen Cluxton. Sean Bugler forced himself into the game with two points and when Dublin looked as if a Derry tackle was dislodging the ball, Kilkenny would arrive to put out the fire instantly. David Byrne takes the ball out of defence. Evan Logan / INPHO Evan Logan / INPHO / INPHO While Derry needed a big moment or two, they slipped five points into arrears with less than 20 minutes on the clock. In this closing period they outscored Dublin 0-5 to 0-2, but crucially they had a Shane McGuigan two-point effort hit the post, while Rogers and Lachlan Murray – with two minutes left, skewed their close-in shots for goal wide. Having said that, Dublin had an effort from Sean Bugler heading for goal with five minutes left, only for Ruairí Forbes to clear it off the line. Sean Bugler has a shot for goal. Evan Logan / INPHO Evan Logan / INPHO / INPHO At the very end, Dublin played a little keep-ball. Cian Murphy had it in his hands when the clock hit 70 minutes. He booted it out out of the ground and in the direction of the Quayside shopping centre. Proper championship. But it's only beginning now. Derry season comes to an end with Dublin defeat
Derry's championship season came to an end with a 0-22 to 0-20 defeat to Dublin in their Group Four finale at Pairc Esler. The Oak Leafers failed to win a league or championship match across their 11 outings in 2025, mustering just two draws from that period but despite that fact, they entered Saturday's clash with a chance of reaching the last 12. The Dubs also entered their meeting with the Ulster county needing a win to progress and they did just that to secure passage from the 'Group of Death' alongside Armagh and Farrell's side emerged sharpest from the blocks, hitting four rapid fire scores in the opening two minutes to take an early lead, the last of those coming from the boot of Paddy Small who fired over when aiming for the back of the net. The Oak Leafers eventually settled with their first score on six minutes from captain Conor Glass. Despite a desperate start, Derry led midway through the half mainly thanks to two two point frees from Shane McGuigan. The sides were locked at 13 points each after a breathless end to the half with Cormac Costello and McGuigan trading two pointed efforts. Like the first, Dublin hit the ground running when play restarted, Con O'Callaghan firing over just 15 seconds after the restart. Killian McGinnis, John Small and Sean Bugler were amongst the scores as the Dubs outscored Derry 0-5 to 0-1 in seven minutes midway through the half, the second four point burst which probably tipped the scale in Dublin's favour. The men in blue led by four entering the final 10 minutes and with both sides' championship seasons hanging in the balance, the game grew frantic. McGuigan kicked his 10th score of the night alongside an Ethan Doherty effort to cut the gap back to three. Paddy Tally's side could have levelled as McGuigan slipped Brendan Rogers through on goal but his effort went right across the face of Stephen Cluxton's goal and wide of the target. From almost the very next play of the game, Dublin broke and Bugler rounded Ben McKinless and looked destined to slot the ball into the empty net only for a spectacular goal-line clearance from Ruairi Forbes. Niall Loughlin and Rogers added two late scores to cut the gap to two but Dessie Farrell's men would hold onto the ball for the remaining seconds and seal a home preliminary quarter-final and with it end Derry's campaign. The Steelstown man gets another chance to clip over a point which he does. 10 minutes ago 66' Dublin 0-22 Derry 0-18 A big goal chance for Sean Bugler is scooped off the line by the leg of Ruairi Forbes. Armagh 0-15 Galway 0-07 (Half-time) With the Orchard County already qualified for the next round before a ball was kicked today, many expected them to field more fringe players. Rian O'Neill returns as Armagh survive late Derry blitz in nervy All-Ireland opener
RIAN O'NEILL'S confirmed return before throw-in drew as many cheers from Armagh fans as the hooter at the end did as their All-Ireland defence kicked off with a nervous win. But Orchard captain for the night Rory Grugan insisted that the victory was all that mattered — as his side stumbled over the line to take two points in the group of death from a game they should have cruised home in. 2 Rian O'Neill returned for All-Ireland champions Armagh on Saturday at the BOX-IT Athletic Grounds 2 Armagh's defence kicked off with a nervous win against a tough Derry outfit Second-half goals from Barry McCambridge and Conor Turbitt saw Kieran McGeeney's men take a commanding 13-point lead with just over ten minutes left. But Derry rallied, scoring two late goals from Conor Glass and Tommy Rogers to make the hosts sweat at the Athletic Grounds. Armagh hung on to banish the memories of another drama-filled Ulster final defeat to Donegal. Grugan said: 'The first few days are tough, getting the corner turned in terms of mentally and that, but we managed to do that and we put in a good ten days of training. read more on gaa 'We treated this like a final, basically, because if you lose this first game, you're scrambling away to Dublin, neutral to Galway, you don't know where it'll take you and suddenly you're fighting for your life. 'We want to push on now, see where this week takes us and I look forward to Croke Park.' Grugan admitted he was glad to hear the final whistle. He added: 'I went off just after we'd conceded the first goal and it went back to a ten-point deficit, and you're hoping that's still enough of a buffer. Most read in GAA Football 'But in the modern game we've seen those disappear really quickly. There was a significant wind there, Derry took advantage of it. Antrim GAA captain Dermot McAleese insists Ulster SFC clash against Armagh will be at Corrigan Park 'You could tell they were really going for goal and they never stopped fighting. They came at us hard, kicked a couple of two-pointers and it was more nervy than it needed to be there. 'It would have been a travesty if we threw it away.' Armagh came flying out of the blocks in the second half having only led by three points at the break despite dominating the opening period. The return of talisman O'Neill for his first game of the year came in the No 6 jersey after he had initially not been named in the matchday squad. That all changed on the day and he was among the scorers as his side led 0-9 to 0-2 after 19 minutes. Grugan, Andrew Murnin, Oisín Conaty with a two-pointer, Ross McQuillan and Turbitt all contributed. But Derry hit back with Conor Glass, Paul Cassidy, Ruairí Forbes and Shane McGuigan on target to cut Armagh's half-time lead to 0-12 to 0-9. Murnin, Jarly Óg Burns, Jason Duffy and McQuillan all helped extend the Orchard lead again before McCambridge steered Murnin's optimistic delivery into the net and then Turbitt displayed class to slip his shot past keeper Ben McKinless. However, Derry chipped away with a big two-pointer from McGuigan and then with ten minutes to play, Glass' low effort gave Armagh keeper Ethan Rafferty no chance. And Paddy Tally's men really started to believe when substitute Rogers rattled in another goal. Indeed, they came close to turning it around with Rafferty required to make saves from Rogers and his namesake Brendan. But Joe McElroy stemmed the tide with a vital insurance point as Armagh hung on and they now head to Croke Park to face Dublin next weekend with both sides having won their group openers. Derry will welcome Galway to Celtic Park as both teams look to get off the mark. Ahead of facing the Dubs, Grugan warned: 'The amount of goal chances Derry created and scored would be concerning.' 'Mixed emotions' for Tally after Derry lose to Armagh
Derry manager Paddy Tally conceded that he had "mixed emotions" as his battling side went down 2-21 to 2-17 to Armagh in their opening game of the All-Ireland round-robin series at the Athletic Grounds. The All-Ireland champions led 2-16 to 0-13 midway through the second half thanks to goals from Barry McCambridge and Conor Turbitt before Conor Glass and Dan Higgins hit the net for Derry cutting the deficit to four. Despite that Derry comeback, Armagh steadied the ship however to secure the victory. Tally told BBC Sport NI that he believed his side had carved out enough scoring chances to win the game. "Immensely proud of the effort the players put in, especially in the second half when it looked like the game could get away from them," reflected the Derry boss. "Delighted that they showed the heart and spirit that was required to come back but also very disappointed that we didn't win the game with the chances that we created. "We had enough chances to win the match but some of our decisions and shot selection was poor, and even some of our execution. "We scored two goals in the second half but could have had another four, so mixed emotions, disappointed, but proud of the effort." Tally expressed satisfaction with the manner in which the Oak Leafers fashioned their opportunities but bemoaned a lack of a clinical edge on occasions. "Every chance we got was a worked move but you've got to take them. A lot of these matches are decided on fine lines. "We hadn't played for seven weeks since losing in the Ulster SFC and you could see a bit of rustiness but that is out of our system now. "We were loose defensively at times which wasn't good enough and we struggled with kick-outs at times." Next up for Derry is a Celtic Park encounter on 1 June against a Galway team who lost out to Dublin in their first All-Ireland outing. "I've never doubted the character of this team. We've got to stick at it and we have a massive game against Galway next week."
