PM Modi to discuss Hajj 2025 quota with Crown Prince; 620 deputationists to serve Indian pilgrims in Saudi Arabia
India has selected as many as 620 deputationists this year to assist Consulate General of India (CGI) Jeddah in effective Hajj management in Saudi Arabia with the objective of serving Indian Hajj pilgrims, the government said on Tuesday. Union Minister of State for Minority Affairs George Kurian on Tuesday inaugurated the orientation-cum-training programme of deputationists of Hajj 2025, an official statement said. They include 266 administrative and 354 medical deputationists. The programme is scheduled for two days on April 22 and 23, at SCOPE Complex, Lodhi Road, New Delhi. During the orientation-cum-training programme, these deputationists will be trained on different issues, including an overview of Hajj operations, the role of deputationists, health issues, crowd and disaster management, and the Haj Suvidha App before being deputed to Saudi Arabia. Kurian appreciated the role of Hajj deputationists 'as crucial enablers in successful Hajj operations" and exhorted them to perform the duties assigned to them with "utmost sincerity and commitment'. The management of the Indian Hajj pilgrimage is the largest logistical exercise managed by the Indian government outside the country's borders. India and Saudi Arabia are set to sign at least six agreements on Tuesday during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's official visit to the Gulf nation, news agency PTI reported, citing sources. PM Modi will discuss issues relating to Hajj, including the quota for Indian pilgrims, during his meeting with Crown Prince and Prime Minister of Saudi Arabia, Mohammed bin Salman Al Saud, as per the report. India's Haj quota for 2025 has risen to 175,025 from 136,020 in 2014, with arrangements for 122,518 pilgrims finalised. However, due to delays by Combined Haj Group Operators in contract agreements, approximately 42,000 Indians are unlikely to perform the sacred pilgrimage this year. The two nations are expected to sign agreements in the fields of space, energy, health, science and scientific research, culture and advanced technology. "Meetings in Riyadh continued late Monday to finalise details, with over a dozen MoUs under discussion, some to be signed at the official level," an official told PTI. Modi is on a state visit to Saudi Arabia at the invitation of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. First Published: 22 Apr 2025, 10:46 PM IST

Can Indian expats in UAE file for divorce in India? Here's what to know
Question: My husband and I got married in a court in Dubai. We are now preparing for a mutual divorce. Can we complete these formalities in our home country (India) while still being UAE residents? What would the process be like? Answer: It is assumed that you both are Indian nationals and are non-Muslims by faith. In the UAE, non-Muslim individuals may apply the provisions of UAE Personal Laws for Non-Muslims if they intend to marry in the UAE. This is by Article 1(1) of the Federal Decree Law No. 41 of 2022 on Civil personal Status, which states, "The provisions of the present Decree-Law shall apply to non-Muslim citizens or the United Arab Emirates, and to non-Muslim foreigners who reside in the State unless one of them invokes the application of their respective law, in relation to matters of marriage, divorce, estate will and proof of affiliation, without prejudice to Articles 12, 13, 15, 16 and 17 of the reference Federal Law No. 5 of 1985. In India, non-Muslim Indian nationals may opt for the personal law of the faith they follow to apply for divorce procedures before the court, which has jurisdiction based on their domicile (permanent address) in India or in the place where both husband and wife have resided last, or in the place of domicile of wife or where the marriage has been solemnised. Based on the above, you and your husband may seek further legal advice from a lawyer practising in India before deciding to file mutual divorce procedures in India. However, it is suggested that you translate your marriage certificate in the UAE and attest to it by the UAE Ministry of Justice. Thereafter, it must be attested by the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Co-operation and by the Consulate General of India in Dubai. Furthermore, you and your husband may engage a lawyer(s) in India and provide the said lawyer(s) a power of attorney duly attested by the Consulate General of India in Dubai to register the divorce case before a court of competent jurisdiction in India. If directed by the court, you and your husband may have to travel to India to appear in court. For additional information on the procedure, you may consult a lawyer in India.
