Davide Ancelotti ‘on radar' of historic Spanish club as Rangers face battle to land managerial target

But he has suitors elsewhere too. With the search for the new Rangers boss nearing its conclusion, Ancelotti and Russell Martin look to be the last two names in the frame. Steven Gerrard is reportedly no longer in the running with the former Gers boss set to pull out of the race to making a stunning Light Blues return. It's claimed the 44-year old and his family have opted to stay in the Middle East, where they've been living since Gerrard was appointed Al-Ettifaq boss back in January 2023. Ancelotti, son of legendary manager Carlo, remains a firm contender to be Philippe Clement's permanent replacement at Ibrox. He's been working as his father's assistant since 2016 but has decided not to join him on the Brazil national team's coaching staff. Speaking early this week, Carlo revealed that Davide was in talks with "other clubs," suggesting that it wasn't only Rangers who were interested in hiring him. Reports in Italy have since claimed that Serie A newcomers Pisa are monitoring Ancelotti, with their boss Filippo Inzaghi looking increasingly likely to head for the exit door. Now, reports in Spain claim Ancelotti has caught the eye of one of the country's top clubs. Estadio Deportivo say that Deportivo La Coruna have him on their radar. Ian Murray on the day his Hibs team settled for defeat to Rangers A fallen giant of Spanish football, they're currently in the second tier. With one game left to go, promotion back to La Liga is well out of reach with Depor languishing in 15th place. Current boss Oscar Gilsanz is already in place but his future is very much uncertain, although he has managed to keep them in the division comfortably. Deportivo's current plight is a far cry from their glory days of two decades ago. A club from the relatively small city A Coruna, they defied the odds to win the La Liga title in 2000, the first and only league triumph in their history. Depor also won the Copa del Rey in 2002 and were fixtures in the Champions League. They were quarter-finalists in 2001 and 2002 before reaching the semi-finals in 2004. Their golden era began to decline and they became mid-table team. In 2011, they were relegated to the second tier but bounced back immediately. However, they ended up being relegated again on the final day of the 2012/13 season and were headed for insolvency. That didn't happen and they were promoted back to La Liga again, this time enjoying a four-year stay back in the top flight before being relegated again. This time, the decline only got worse and in 2020, Depor were shockingly relegated to the third tier, 20 years on from being crowned champions of Spain. They struggled to get out of that level until finally being promoted back to the Segunda Division last year. Keep up to date with ALL the latest news and transfers at the Scottish Sun football page

When Lionel Messi fought with Luis Enrique, ‘a period of tension'
On May 31, Luis Enrique will coach PSG in the Champions League final in Munich against Inter Milan, but he took time out to rewind to his days with Barcelona, in particular a fight with Lionel Messi. 'Everyone thought it was easy to manage Barcelona with Messi, Neymar, and Suárez, but now it's clear that it isn't,' says Luis Enrique just days before the big European final. The moment of friction came in 2015. In January 2015, Messi returned to Barcelona training a couple of days after his teammates, after spending New Year's in Rosario. He arrived by plane with Dani Alves and Neymar. But for some reason Messi was in a bad mood. During the training, Messi fell in the opponent's penalty area and Luis Enrique, who was refereeing, said, 'siga siga' (go on),triggering protests from Messi. The situation escalated and Messi went after the coach in the dressing room and Clarin the newspaper reported that Neymar had to intervene to stub out the tension that day. That weekend though, Messi was substituted in a loss to Real Sociedad. Messi was brought in only 13 minutes into the second half, didn't have much of a role in the game, and was substituted. He ended up arguing with Enrique again, and didn't turn up for training next day. 'Until everything was resolved, there was a period of tension, which I certainly didn't seek out, but which arose and which I had to deal with,' Luis Enrique recalled now. In the recent past, in 2022, Messi too has spoken about that phase. 'I had a special relationship with Luis Enrique. When he decided to leave, we tried to convince him to stay until the very end because we were still doing well. In 2015 January he benched me and there was a conflict, but it got resolved and we had a fantastic relationship,' Messi said. Under Enrique's leadership, Barca won two league titles, two Copa del Rey triumphs, a win at the Super Cup, and a Champions League title. 'Today I can only speak highly of Leo Messi,' says Luis Enrique, who left Barça with an 80.29 percent effectiveness rate: 'A beastly season.'

Photo: AFP Barcelona's teenage star Lamine Yamal signed a new contract until 2031 with the Catalan giants on Tuesday after a spectacular season. The 17-year-old winger is already one of the club's key players and helped them land a domestic treble of La Liga, the Copa del Rey and the Spanish Super Cup. "Barcelona and Lamine Yamal have reached a deal to extend his contract to June 30, 2031," said the Catalan club in a statement. "Lamine Yamal's renewal is a demonstration of the solidity of Barca's project. His emergence on to the world football scene is like few others, and it began with his debut on April 29, 2023, still at the age of 15." Spanish media reported the new deal makes him one of Barcelona's best paid players. After triumphing at Euro 2024 with Spain last summer, Yamal scored 18 goals and provided 25 assists in 55 matches across all competitions during a sensational campaign. Operating on the right flank and a prodigious dribbler, Yamal's skill and speed contributed greatly to Barca netting 102 league goals this season as they reclaimed the crown from rivals Real Madrid. Yamal, who came through the club's feted La Masia youth academy and is often compared to all-time Barcelona great Lionel Messi, made his debut in 2023 under Xavi Hernandez at just 15. By the end of the 2023-24 campaign he had emerged as the team's main attacking weapon, the bright spot in a poor campaign where Barca finished empty-handed. Following his exploits at the Euros, Yamal fitted Flick's attacking style to perfection and adding more consistency, showed he has become one of the world's best players. Yamal put in two brilliant Champions League semi-final performances against Inter Milan but his team were edged 7-6 on aggregate and must wait to end their European drought. "I will keep my promise and I will bring (the Champions League trophy) to Barcelona, we will not stop until we get it," pledged Yamal after the game. Despite his youth the winger has already played over 100 times for Barcelona. Yamal, who turns 18 in July, follows team-mate Raphinha and coach Flick in signing contact extensions in the last few days. Spanish media report his contract includes various bonuses for different achievements, including winning the Ballon d'Or, as well as a significant pay rise. Yamal is a candidate to win the trophy for the world's best player this year.

Yamal signs new 6-yr deal with Barca
PA Media/dpa London Barcelona's teenage phenomenon Lamine Yamal has signed a new contract until 2031. The forward, who does not turn 18 until July, made his debut in April 2023 aged just 15 but has already become an integral part of the club's success. He helped Barca to the LaLiga, Spanish Super Cup and Copa del Rey treble and was a driving force in their journey to the semi-finals of the Champions League. Yamal, who joined the club's academy aged seven, has already made 106 appearances - becoming the club's youngest player to reach a century of games. He has scored 25 goals, while also becoming the youngest goalscorer in all three domestic competitions. With Spain last summer, he became the youngest player to appear and score at a European Championship before their victory in the final, the day after his 17th birthday, made him the youngest winner of a major international tournament. He topped the assist rankings with four, scored the goal of the tournament and went on to win the Kopa Trophy for best under-21 player at the Ballon d'Or awards.
