Democratic senator defends working with Trump after Booker's 'complicity' accusation

Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto, D-Nev., responded to Sen. Corey Booker's, D-N.J., outburst on the Senate floor last week in an interview with The New York Times. Cortez Masto was asked by the New York Times to respond to Booker's accusations against Democrats that they were "complicit" with President Donald Trump's agenda. "I don't need lectures from anyone on how to push back and fight this administration. I've been doing it since I got to the Senate, because I won my Senate race in 2016 and Donald Trump won at the same time. I'm also from a swing state; I've still got to get stuff done on behalf of my state," Masto told The New York Times. "I've been doing it since I got to the Senate, because I won my Senate race in 2016 and Donald Trump won at the same time. I'm also from a swing state; I've still got to get stuff done on behalf of my state," she added. Booker accused his fellow Democratic senators last week of aligning themselves with Trump because they are in favor of passing new police legislation. He claimed that without amendments, the legislation would allow the president to pick winners and losers in terms of who receives the benefits. "That is complicity with an authoritarian leader who is trashing our country," Booker said. "It is time for Democrats to have a backbone. It's time for us to fight. It's time for us to draw a line, and when it comes to the safety of my state being denied these grants, that's why I'm standing here." Booker's objection stemmed from a call from Democrats to pass a package of law enforcement-related bills aimed at boosting resources for police, including resources to help shore up death benefits for police officers lost in the line of duty, resources for greater mental health support for officers, resources to address child exploitation. The bills, which eventually passed, were discussed and approved in committee before reaching the Senate floor. Masto thought Trump's legislation would benefit everyone across the country. "Why would you throw out good legislation that's going to benefit everyone across the country? That doesn't make sense. We still have to have a functioning government. That's part of gaining the trust of Americans again, so they understand there are people that are working on their behalf," Masto said. "But most importantly, we have to win. Winning means we've got to win these swing states, and focus on those swing voters and what matters to them and talk to them and that we're addressing the issues they care about."

Cory Booker slams Democrat colleagues over Trump

Published: Updated: A vocal member of the Senate Democratic Caucus has gone on another unhinged rant. New Jersey Senator Corey Booker unleashed on his Democrat colleagues Tuesday evening, accusing them of being 'willing to be complicit' in President Donald Trump's governance. 'It's time for Democrats to have a backbone. It's time for us to fight. It's time for us to draw lines, the New Jersey Senator said, during his latest rant. 'Don't be complicit to the president of the United States,' Booker stated. 'We are standing at a moment where our president is eviscerating the Constitution of the United States of America, and we're willing to go along with that today.' 'No, not on my watch. I have to stand against this. It is a violation of our Constitution for the president of the United States to ignore the will of Congress and decide which states are eligible for grants and which are not,' he added. Booker's tough words were directed at a pair of his Democrat colleagues, Senators Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota and Catherine Cortez Masto of Nevada. 'I will note that Sen. Booker objected to my police reauthorization bill, the COPS funding, the Clinton COPS funding, long before Donald Trump came into office. So this is not just about this. This is a long dispute over this type of funding,' Klobuchar said, biting back at her colleague. Klobuchar then added another jab at Booker, noting that he didn't think it was worth his time to show up to debate the merits of her proposal in a prior committee meeting. 'I can't help it if someone couldn't change their schedule to be there,' Klobuchar fired back. All of that fiery rhetoric seemed to have been for nothing in the end, as Booker did not oppose the two police bills, which were passed by unanimous consent. Booker has made a name for himself with his long-winded speeches in the chamber, recently setting a record for the longest ever solo address on the Senate Floor. The 25-hour marathon started on March 31st and ran over a day into the evening of April 1st.

Booker is considered to be a potential hopeful for the 2028 Democratic presidential nomination, and his attacks on his colleagues come as the Democrats are searching for both an identity in the Trump era, as well as a new leader for their political party.

Coronado beach closure lifted by county health officials

Above: KUSI report on Sen. Corey Booker touring the Tijuana River on Thursday, May 29. CORONADO, Calif. (FOX 5/KUSI) — County health officials have lifted the closure of Coronado's shoreline that was put in place over Memorial Day weekend. The ending of the closure was accompanied by the issuance of advisories for La Playa Beach near Lawrence Street in Point Loma and the water near the Coronado Lifeguard Headquarters due to bacteria levels that exceed state health standards. The entire western shoreline of Coronado — from Avenida Lunar in the south to North Beach in the north — was first closed on Saturday due to the flow of sewage from the Tijuana River Valley. The closure came on the heels of a period with worse-than-normal conditions for South County residents amid work to the sewage treatment system on the other side of the border. Sen. Cory Booker tours Tijuana River sewage crisis The repairs earlier this month to a critical line connecting the San Antonio de los Buenos Plant in Mexico to the South Bay International Wastewater Treatment Plant in the U.S. required the diversion of wastewater into the Tijuana River. When the repairs began, Mexican and U.S. officials noted the South Bay treatment plant would try to collect as much of the extra wastewater as possible, but it could lead to temporarily increased sewage flows. The work was completed last week and concluded with minimal sewage flows crossing the border, according to a post on X by the U.S. International Boundary and Water Commission, which oversees the South Bay treatment plant. With the lifting of the Coronado shoreline closure, the county's ongoing beach management actions have returned to what has become normal in recent years: closures limited to perennial problem spots close to the Tijuana River estuary, like Silver Strand and Imperial Beach. As of Wednesday, advisories due to levels of bacteria exceeding state standards are also in place for other area that regularly see health warnings like La Jolla Children's Pool, North Cove Vacation Isle in Mission Bay and the La Jolla Cove.
