Corgi helping fund prostate cancer tests across Wales
Corgi, a family-run business that has been making luxury socks, knitwear, and accessories for more than 130 years, is donating to Prostate Cymru to help the charity organise PSA testing events. Prostate Cymru has held events in Kenfig Hill, Cowbridge, Brecon, Carmarthen, Cardiff, and Swansea on its mission to test 3,000 men. There are still events to come in Narberth, Aberystwyth, and North Wales, and men are encouraged to register, as symptoms often do not appear in the early stages of the disease. Corgi is run by Lisa Wood and Chris Jones. Mr Jones said: "We're delighted to play a part to help Prostate Cymru get men a PSA test. "In the past, we've produced Prostate Cymru socks to help raise funds for the charity which does some fantastic work, but also importantly, we want to do our bit to raise awareness among men and encourage them to get tested." Corgi is a royally recommended company, as it has a Royal Warrant of Appointment as Manufacturers of Knitwear and Hosiery to His Majesty the King. The Royal Warrant Holders' Charity has also donated £3,000 to the cause. Claire Anderson, RWH charity manager, said: "The Royal Warrant Holders' Charity is so pleased to support Prostate Cymru which has been nominated by Royal Warrant holder, Corgi Hosiery. "It's a wonderful charity which raises awareness about testing and helps identify people at risk of prostate cancer. "The £3,000 grant will enable it to carry out testing at eight testing sites across Wales." On the day, men just have to give a blood sample. Corgi and the Royal Warrant Holders' Charity's support is covering the cost of specialist nurses and the team of phlebotomists. Tina Tew of Prostate Cymru said: "The evidence tells us that if we could make it easier for men to get tested, more men would welcome a test. "And that's why we are organising a series of testing events across Wales."

‘I'm sure it's her, reminding me she's still around,' says Sarah, Duchess of York of the late Queen's Corgis
When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. Queen Elizabeth II was always known for her love of Corgis. The late monarch owned over 30 of the dogs over the years, with Muick and Sandy being the last dogs she had before her death in September 2022. In the aftermath, they were adopted by her son, Prince Andrew, and his ex-wife, Sarah, Duchess of York, to enjoy the rest of their life filled with lots of affection and plenty of the best dog treats. Speaking in an address to the Creative Woman Platform in London, the Duchess said that she thinks the Queen talks to her through dogs Muick and Sandy, who live at the Royal Lodge in Windsor with herself and Andrew – and a handful of Norfolk terriers. She said, via The Times, 'I have her dogs, I have her Corgis. Every morning they come in and go, 'woof woof' and all that and I'm sure it's her talking to me. I'm sure it's her, reminding me she's still around.' She then paid tribute to the late Queen, saying, 'Anyway, the real thing is that I had the greatest honor to be her daughter-in-law. That's pretty huge. And when I was driving here, I saw the [London Underground's] Elizabeth line and I said, 'I want everyone to remember what an amazing lady she was.'' Andrew and his daughters Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie gave the Queen Muick alongside a Dorgi (Corgi-dachshund mix) Fergus, in 2021. Fergus sadly died from a heart defect when he was five months old, so later that year the trio gave the Queen another Corgi puppy, Sandy. Shortly after the Queen died, a source told the BBC that it was Sarah who found the puppies, and that 'the duchess bonded with Her Majesty over dog walking and riding horses, and even after her divorce, she would continue her great friendship with Her Majesty, by walking the dogs in Frogmore and chatting." In 2023, Sarah said that the Corgis were so close to the Queen that Muick had grieved after her death. She told dog trainer and presenter Graeme Hall that it took the dog about a year to come to accept it, with Hall explaining, via The Independent, 'There's a kind of grieving process, and we know that dogs do go through a grieving process as well. We don't fully understand it because we can't chat to them over a cup of coffee, but you certainly see behavior change, sometimes they're very flat.' Meanwhile, the Queen's son King Charles and his wife Queen Camilla have dogs of their own. Between them, they currently have a Jack Russell Terrier, Bluebell, Jack Russell mix Moley – who Camilla adopted earlier this year – and King Charles' new puppy, a Lagotto Romagnolo, Snuff. The 5 dog breeds that are known to bark the most and the one thing that links them
If you have grumpy neighbours likely to complain about noise, you may want to avoid getting any of these vocal dogs. Dogs bark. It's a fact. But did you know that some breeds of dog are more likely to bark and growl than others? The genetic make-up of different dog breeds can make them more likely to be extra vocal, particularly in stressful situations. When choosing which type of dog to get, there are many things to consider, including how often they'll need walked, or whether or not they'll shed a lot of fur. In fact, even the stinkiness of your dog can depend on the breed, and some types of dog are more likely to give off odours than others. All these factors may influence your choice of dog, but those with neighbours who often complain about noise should probably avoid these five dogs known to bark, growl and howl. But which dog breeds are the loudest? The American Kennel Club shared a list of the noisiest dog breeds that those looking for a calm and peaceful house may want to skip when choosing a puppy. And looking through the list, there is one thing that seems to link them all; they don't like their small size get in the way of a big bark. Five of the noisiest dog breeds 1. Corgi These royal pups are one of the dogs most likely to be extra vocal compared to the rest of their canine cousins. Barking is a fairly common trait with both breeds of Corgi - the Pembroke Welsh Corgi and the Cardigan Welsh Corgi. Historically, corgis were bred to herd sheep and cattle, giving them the characteristics to be very vocal indeed. 2. Miniature Schnauzer Terriers are known to be barkers, and are widely considered to be quite vocal. The Miniature Schnauzer enforces this stereotype of terriers. The breed, which was bred to be a guard dog and deal with rodents, has a reputation of barking at even the slightest of noises. However, it is possible to train them to be quiet. 3. Yorks The Yorkshire Terrier, or Yorkie, is another small dog known for barking. This little pooch also makes the list for being one of the smelliest dog breeds. 4. Chihuahua Chihuahuas are known for having a LOT of attitude, and it will be no surprise to any dog lover that these little yappers have made the list. In fact, chihuahuas have been known to bark pretty much continuously, and even for no reason. 5. West Highland White Terrier One from our own land of Scotland, the West Highland White Terrier has also made the list of pooches that bark more often than not. Better known as Westies, the West Highland White Terrier is a breed that loves to excitedly notify their owner of everything they notice. If you have a Westie, you're always going to know if they've come across a new sound, smell, or sight. But just because all these dogs love to bark doesn't mean you should avoid them altogether. In fact, these pups all have big personalities that need an owner who is able to appreciate them- whilst keeping their incessant barking habits in check. Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community! Blizzard's Overwatch Team Just Unionized: 'What I Want To Protect Most Here Is The People'
The Overwatch 2 team at Blizzard has unionized. That includes nearly 200 developers across disciplines ranging from art and testing to engineering and design. Basically anyone who doesn't have someone else reporting to them. It's the second wall-to-wall union at the storied game maker since the World of Warcraft team unionized last July. 'Game developers behind Activision Blizzard's hit franchise Overwatch have joined the Communications Workers of America (CWA), becoming the latest group of video game workers at Microsoft-owned studios to form a wall-to-wall union,' the CWA announced in a press release shared with Kotaku on Friday. 'A neutral arbitrator confirmed today that an overwhelming majority of workers have either signed a union authorization card or indicated that they wanted union representation via an online portal.' The Overwatch Gamemakers Guild-CWA is just the latest group to organize at a Microsoft-owned game studio since the tech giant entered into a labor neutrality agreement. The policy shift took frustrations that bubbled up with management back in 2021 and funneled them into an objective with assurances that company leaders wouldn't interfere. Like unions at Bethesda Game Studios and Raven Software, the Overwatch Gamemakers Guild now has to bargain for its first contract, a process that Microsoft has been accused of slow-walking as negotiations with other internal game unions drag on for years. 'The biggest issue was the layoffs at the beginning of 2024,' Simon Hedrick, a test analyst at Blizzard, told Kotaku. 'Up to that moment I'd been really happy in what I was doing.' He began as a long-time fan of World of Warcraft and started playing Overwatch from day one in 2016. In 2022 he was hired to work at Blizzard on quality assurance for the sequel's versus modes and matchmaking. Hendrick has had up to eight game clients running simultaneously to test for issues and keeps a Corgi plush ('a mascot of Irvine campus #blizzlife') by his work desk. On Thursdays he meets colleagues in the Blizzard Irvine campus library to play Magic: The Gathering. When I asked him what he loves most about working there, his answer was the same as everyone else's: the people. When nearly 2,000 layoffs swept through Microsoft last year, including at Blizzard where a new game was canceled and several members of the Overwatch team were cut, it was a wake up call for Hedrick. 'People were gone out of nowhere and there was nothing we could do about it,' he said. 'What I want to protect most here is the people' The post-merger shockwave—Microsoft had officially wrapped its acquisition of Activision Blizzard only months earlier—was one catalyst for the organizing effort at Blizzard's Team 4, which was originally formed in the late 2000s to create the company's planned MMO Titan, before the troubled project eventually morphed into Overwatch. Foster Elmendorf, a senior test analyst, was at Blizzard for all of it after joining the company back in 2004, a dream job he secured simply by applying online at the time. He said other big drivers pushing the Overwatch team to unionize included pay disparities, work-from-home restrictions, and wanting codified protections around things like crunch, time off, and severance in the event of layoffs. Organizing Blizzard employees stress that improving their working conditions can also lead to better games, while the opposite—layoffs, forced resignations, and uncompetitive pay can make them worse. Overwatch 2 staff were particularly upset last spring when changes to the company's profit sharing program left them with zero bonuses for an entire year. 'If [concessions] are given without organizing they can be taken away without it, too,' Elmendorf said. He currently helps oversee testing for in-game cosmetics from the concept phase through implementation. He loves making games and wants developers to have a seat at the table, not just to protect their own interests but to make the games better, to prioritize fun and not just profit. 'For a long time time I felt the video game industry needed more organizing,' he told Kotaku. He later added, 'It's been 20 years of asking for better pay and it hasn't happened yet.' 2025 is an important year for Overwatch 2. Despite ditching much of its promised PVE content, the hero shooter rolled out some big-swing design initiatives, including a new mode called Stadium that incorporates MOBA elements like mid-match upgrades. Season 16 is currently underway and the team just announced a Street Fighter VI collaboration that all but transforms existing characters into Capcom fighters like Ryu and Chun-Li. The effort to unionize the Overwatch team hasn't just led by quality assurance testers. Other disciplines were also involved. UI artist Sadie Boyd became part of the push immediately after joining Blizzard last September, just as another round of layoffs was sweeping through Microsoft. She said someone posted a link to sign a union card in one of the Blizzard Slack channels, which she did immediately. After all, she'd already been part of a union drive at Prey and Redfall maker Arkane Austin before it had been shut down by Microsoft earlier in the year. 'We're not just a number on an Excel sheet,' Boyd said. 'We want to make games but we can't do it without a sense of security.' Unionizing doesn't make a studio immune to layoffs or being shuttered, but it's the first step toward making companies have a discussion about those things with employees rather than just shadow-dropping them in an email full of platitudes. Boyd sees the Overwatch union as a tool for negotiating a range of issues, like if and how generative AI is used at Blizzard, as well as a possible source of inspiration to teams at other studios. 'Our industry is at such a turning point,' she said. 'I really think with the announcement of our union on Overwatch...I know that will light some fires.' .
