U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders to speak at three West Virginia events Aug. 8 and 9

Bernie Sanders, I-Vermont, a former candidate for president, will bring his 'Fighting Oligarchy: Where We Go From Here' speaking event tour to three West Virginia locations next weekend. Sanders will speak in Wheeling Friday, Aug. 8 and in Mingo County and Charleston on Saturday, Aug. 9. Sanders' website describes the tour as 'real discussions across America on how we move forward to take on the Oligarchs and corporate interests who have so much power and influence in this country. The tour will target 'deep red' districts held by Republicans, including West Virginia and North Carolina, according to a news release. 'Red state, blue state — the people of this country are opposed to an economy that works for the 1% and not for working class Americans.' Sanders said in a news release. 'I'll be heading to West Virginia and North Carolina to discuss the need for decent paying jobs, health care for all, and the end of a corrupt campaign finance system in which billionaires buy politicians. Together, we can defeat the oligarchs who have taken hold of our country.' Sanders ran for president as a Democrat in 2016, losing in the primary to Hillary Clinton. He also ran in the 2020 Democratic primary. He won the 2016 Democratic primary in every county in West Virginia, the West Virginia Democratic Party noted in a news release Thursday. The party said they welcome Sanders to the state, calling the visit a reminder of what public service should look like. 'While Sen. Shelley Moore Capito, Sen. Jim Justice, Congressman Riley Moore, and Congresswoman Carol Miller continue to avoid public town halls and shield themselves from accountability, Senator Sanders is once again doing what they refuse to do: meeting directly with the people of West Virginia,' they said in the statement. 'We are thankful for his continued advocacy on many issues, especially on behalf of health care access, a strong and solvent Social Security system, quality public education and most importantly, reducing the influence of money in politics. 'While perspectives may vary on some of Senator Sanders' positions, his commitment to economic fairness and opportunity resonates deeply with West Virginians,' they wrote. Wheeling 6 p.m. Friday, Aug. 8, at the Capitol Theatre, 1015 Main Street in Wheeling. Doors open at 3:30 p.m. Parking is available on the street and in nearby surface lots. Tickets are not required, but an RSVP is encouraged. Mingo County 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 9 at the Lenore Community Center, 19 Laurel Creek Road in Lenore. Doors open at 11:30 a.m. ET. Christina Bohannan makes third run for Iowa's 1st Congressional District
Jun. 21—History shows that just because a candidate makes multiple attempts to win an election doesn't mean they can't eventually pull through. U.S. Rep. Mariannette Miller-Meeks lost a number of times to Dave Loebsack before winning Iowa's 1st Congressional District seat in a close 2020 election. Now her past Democratic challenger, Christina Bohannan, is attempting the same thing for the 2026 election cycle, provided she is the favorite in the primary. On June 17, Bohannan announced her campaign to take on Miller-Meeks once again. In a press release, her campaign said Bohannan nearly defeated Miller-Meeks in 2024 — less than 800 votes decided the election — and that the Democrat "outworked, outraised and outmatched her." Bohannan said, "Mariannette Miller-Meeks has had three terms in Congress — three chances to do right by the people of Iowa. Instead, she has taken over $4 million from corporate special interests and done nothing but vote their way. And she has put partisan politics over Iowans again and again. From cutting billions of dollars from Medicaid in the Trump Administration's One Big Beautiful Bill, to siding with DOGE's cuts to Social Security and enabling unelected, unaccountable billionaires like Elon Musk, Bohannan said the Republican congresswoman has forgotten about her constituents. "It's time someone put Iowa first," Bohannan said. Bohannan went on to say Miller-Meeks needs to explain "why she keeps putting Washington special interests first." The Democratic challenger claimed Miller-Meeks supported Trump's One Big Beautiful Bill, repeatedly voted for cost-increasing tariffs and is a member of the DOGE Caucus. Bohannan previously worked as an engineer and taught at the University of Iowa College of Law for 20 years. She also worked as an elected legislator for the Iowa House, defeating a 20-year incumbent in District 85. Bohannan is running for Congress because she believes in a government that works for the people. In May, another Democrat announced he would be running for Iowa's 1st Congressional District. Bob Krause, a former legislator who also tried running for U.S. Senate, announced his campaign with the slogan "Flip The House With Krause." Krause said Miller-Meeks votes "like Trump's rubber stamp." Travis Terrell, a Democrat from Johnson County, also announced his bid for Iowa's 1st Congressional District race. His campaign page on Facebook notes he is a working-class, New Deal Democrat fighting for healthcare, fair wages and a government that serves other working-class people and not billionaires. In addition to Miller-Meeks likely running for the seat, fellow Republican and former primary challenger David Pautsch announced in February that he would also be running for the seat. Pautsch touts himself as a MAGA Republican. He has been critical of Miller-Meeks, saying she is not conservative enough.

Bernie Sanders makes 'no apologies' for private jet travel on 'Fight Oligarchy' tour
Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., is making "no apologies" for chartering private jets to travel for his " Fighting Oligarchy " tour stops across the country. The Vermont lawmaker and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., have been gaining influence through their "Fighting Oligarchy" tour, quickly becoming the face of the progressive wing of the Democratic Party. Organizers started the tour in response to President Donald Trump's second term to "take on the Oligarchs and corporate interests who have so much power and influence in this country." With multiple rallies a week, Sanders defended his mode of travel, telling "Special Report" executive editor Bret Baier in an exclusive interview Wednesday "that's the only way to get around." "You run a campaign, and you do three or four or five rallies in a week. [It is] the only way you can get around to talk to 30,000 people. You think I'm gonna be sitting on a waiting line at United…while 30, 000 people are waiting?" Sanders said on "Special Report." "That's the only way to get around. No apologies for that. That's what campaign travel is about. We've done it in the past. We're gonna do it in future." JAMES CARVILLE SAYS DEMOCRATS NEED TO STOP LETTING BERNIE SANDERS AND AOC DEFINE THE PARTY Sanders' campaign committee, Friends of Bernie Sanders, spent over $221,000 chartering private jets during the first quarter of 2025, according to Federal Election Commission (FEC) filings reviewed by Fox News Digital. The filing, which was released last month, shows that Sanders dropped the massive haul between three private jet companies: Ventura Jets, Cirrus Aviation Services and N-Jet. Some of these flights included Sanders and Ocasio-Cortez's chartered private jet worth up to a staggering $15,000 an hour for several West Coast stops on their "Fighting Oligarchy" tour. AOC, SANDERS FALL FLAT WITH YOUNG VOTERS AS GEN Z REJECTS 'WEIRD, RADICAL WING': RNC YOUTH CHAIR While defending his travel choices, Sanders, an Independent with considerable influence in the Democratic Party, also offered his take on the considerable success of his country-wide campaign. Sanders claimed the crowds were a mix of Americans across the political spectrum who have "concerns" about the state of U.S. politics. He pointed to alleged concerns over a "government of the billionaire class," "movement toward authoritarianism" and Republican Party policies. "I think at a time when the people on top are doing phenomenally well, when seniors, working-class people are struggling, people want to hear action to stand up to the people who have the wealth and the power and create an economy that works for all of us, not just the people on top," Sanders concluded.
