University softball bows out of 2025 state tournament with 5-1 defeat to Jefferson
SOUTH CHARLESTON – The University High School softball team saw its 2025 season come to a close in the WVSSAC state softball tournament at Little Creek Park on Saturday morning with a 5-1 defeat to Jefferson in an elimination game to kick off Day 2 of action. The Cougars used a strong outing in the circle from Jersey Rummel and some sound defense behind her to stifle the Hawks' normally potent offense and earn their way into the Class AAAA championship series later this afternoon against Cabell Midland. 'We just didn't get the hits we needed when we needed them,' MHS head coach Mindy Parks said. 'It was a very situational game, and things just didn't go our way. It happens that way sometimes, and we know that.' Eight hits yielded only one run as the Hawks stranded eight runners on base. Three of those hits came in the top of the first inning as it seemed UHS had momentum early, loading the bases with only one out. Lexi Elza hit a bouncer to the pitcher that allowed Maddie Campbell to score the game's opening run, but the Hawks wouldn't cross the plate again in the contest. A four-run third inning gave Jefferson the boost it needed to take control and never look back in a key postseason matchup against University High School. The Cougars strung together five consecutive hits to open the third, starting with a run-scoring double from Brooke Allen. Grace Dodson and Savannah Smith followed with RBI singles, and Caroline Abe capped the rally with a sacrifice fly to center, giving Jefferson a 4–1 lead. From that point on, Rummel settled in, allowing just one hit per inning from the second through the sixth. With a comfortable lead behind her, she pitched confidently, trusting her defense. Jefferson added another run in the sixth when Ainsley Phillips led off with a triple and scored on Madison Clark's double, giving Rummel a four-run cushion to finish the final two frames. The Cougars finished with 13 hits, led by Allen, who went 3-for-4. Rummel, Smith, and Clark each had two hits. For UHS, Sophia Lehosit allowed four runs over two innings, while Maddie Campbell delivered five strong innings in relief, giving up just one run on five hits. University High, last year's Class AAA state champion, ended the season 24-7-1. A tough 6–5 loss to Cabell Midland on Friday night pushed them into the losers' bracket, making their path back to the title an uphill battle. 'We know what it's like to be in the winner's bracket, and we said last night this is going to be hard,' said head coach Parks. 'We didn't get in bed until midnight, and then we're up early, but that's just part of the game. Yesterday was a very long day for everybody.' UHS will say goodbye to a lone senior in Kelsey Park, whose impact will be missed, but will return key players on the team next season as the Hawks aim to return to Little Creek Park to fight for a state championship. 'We'll be back,' Parks said. 'I'm confident in that. These girls will be hungry next season. Brockton's AJ Dybantsa and BYU will play UConn at TD Garden in Hall of Fame Series
AJ Dybantsa on his decision to go to BYU, life as projected No. 1 pick in NBA Draft AJ Dybantsa on his decision to go to BYU, life as projected No. 1 pick in NBA Draft AJ Dybantsa on his decision to go to BYU, life as projected No. 1 pick in NBA Draft AJ Dybantsa, a Brockton native and this year's No. 1 recruit in college basketball, will get to play in front of a Boston crowd during the 2025 NCAA season. Dybantsa and the BYU Cougars will square off against the UConn Huskies at TD Garden this November. BYU and UConn will take over the home of the Boston Celtics on Nov. 15 for a showcase showdown, the two schools announced Thursday. The game is part of the Hall of Fame Series, and will feature two teams expected to be among the best squads in college ball in 2025. AJ Dybantsa returning to Boston Dybantsa was born in Brockton but played just one season of high school ball locally. He played his freshman year at St. Sebastian's in Needham before he transferred to Prolific Prep in California -- one of the country's top basketball academies. Dybantsa finished off his high school career at Utah Prep Academy. It was with Utah Prep that Dybantsa returned to Boston last November, when he scored 18 points and had six rebounds in a 79-71 win over Highland School of Virginia at Emmanuel College. Dybantsa was the top high school recruit last year, and announced he'd be playing his college ball at BYU on ESPN's First Take in December. There will be plenty of hype around Dybantsa throughout what will probably be his lone season at BYU. The 6-foot-9 forward is seen as the likely No. 1 overall pick in the 2026 NBA Draft, though a lot can change throughout a college basketball season. Alex Karaban playing in front of home crowd too While Dybantsa will get the bulk of the attention come November, the game will also be a homecoming for UConn forward Alex Karaban. The Southborough native played at Algonquin Regional in Northborough and New Hampton School in New Hampshire before wrapping up his high school career at IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida. He was a four-star recruit when he committed to UConn, and played a critical role on the Huskies teams that won back-to-back NCAA titles in 2023 and 2024. This November's matchup at TD Garden will be just the second time BYU and UConn have played each other. The two schools first matched up in the second round of the 2003 NCAA Tournament, which the 5-seeded UConn won, 58-53.

UGSFL 2025: Eight goals from Narrogin star Malachi Bolton seals big home win, Katanning edge out Williams
A ruthless Narrogin snared their fourth victory in a row to climb to second place on the 2025 Upper Great Southern Football League ladder, thumping Kukerin-Dumbleyung at Clayton Road Oval on Sunday. Malachi Bolton was the star of the show with eight goals in the Hawks' comfortable 60-point win in round five of the season. The Cougars kicked their first two goals with ease in the opening term, but the Hawks hit back with two of their own before quarter time to lead by a point. In a dominant display the Hawks piled on six goals in the second term, setting up the 15.13 (103) to 6.7 (43) result. The visitors kicked another two majors, but Bolton was finding plenty of open space as his Hawks led by 31 points at the long break. The Cougars won the third term kicking 2.6 but were held scoreless in the final term as the Hawks added five more majors. Declin Mumby, Coen Jackman, Anton Hanson, Gregor Taylor and Jordan Heil joined Bolton as the most influential players on the ground while teammate Noah Bowen-Zoccoli received a yellow card after a fight broke out. The Cougars were best served by Will Liston, Peter Joyce, Liam Park, Toby Perrin, Jye Depane and Samuel Doney while Peter Gioulis kicked two goals. Katanning Wanderers moved inside the top four after a gritty second win of the season, downing Williams at Quartermaine Oval on Sunday. It was a dour struggle for most of the low-scoring clash but a five-goal second term from the Tigers guided them to a nine-point win. Caleb Keley and Ryan Pontillo booted two goals each in attack as the Tigers handed the Cats their fourth loss of the season, 9.9 (63) to 7.12 (54). Zane Sutherland, Tyrone Roe, Toby Quartermaine, Thomas Hamon and William Roe were terrific for the home side. The Cats led at quarter time by one point and kicked the only goal of the last term but struggled forward of centre as only Michael Cowcher and Michael Forman kicked multiple goals. Midfielder Kyle Shanahan ran rampant in the middle for the losing side and was well supported by Luca Gangemi, Simon Panizza, Jackson Ryan, Brady Hill and Luke Dobrich. On Saturday in the top of the table clash Boddington remain unbeaten after holding out Wickepin by 41 points in Boddington. The reigning premiers were too slick in the opening half and kicked four unanswered goals in the third to secure a fifth straight win. Lloyd Padwick (four goals) and Harry Cabalzar (three) were hard to stop while Ben Sherry, Troy Egerton-Warburton, Jarrod Salmeri, Callum Giles-Morton and Kiattisak Deechaiyaphum played well in the 13.8 (86) to 6.9 (45) victory. For the Warriors, David Roche (four) and Justin Morisey (two) kicked all six of their goals while Callum Hardie, Dion Anthony, Fraser Wittwer, Ben Hankinson and Ryan Melvin were standout contributors. In the other Saturday fixture Brookton-Pingelly stormed home with five goals in the last term to pinch a draw against Wagin at Brookton. The Bulldogs led by 18 points at the final change but a determined Panthers side rallied and kicked 5.1, as the game ended in a draw 14.7 (91) apiece. The home side were best served by Liam Beacom, Sean Fletcher (three goals), Shannon Fernando, Reese Richardson, Finn Taylor and Adam Brock while Jayden Pickett also kicked three majors. Kym Monteath was a big focal point in attack for the visitors with five majors while Bronson Harry was also damaging with four. Riley Hill, George Gibson, Michael Seeds, Nicholas Mcmahon and Matthew Thomas also had impact for the Bulldogs.
