Colchester mayor backs Essex fire safety scheme for deaf people
People who are deaf or hard of hearing have been encouraged by a city's mayor to book a fire safety assessment at their County Fire & Rescue Service said standard smoke alarms may not be suitable for all, especially those who took their hearing aids out at mayor Lesley Scott-Boutell, who describes herself as severely deaf, said she used a sensory alarm that gave alerts by flashing."It's peace of mind for if the unthinkable happens," said Ms Scott-Boutell, who became the city's 191st mayor in May 2024. The Lib Dem councillor has been trying to break down barriers for people with hearing loss during her year in said her specialist alarm had only gone off once - when she burnt her toast."It takes the fear away," Ms Scott-Boutell added. "When I have all my hearing kit off, I can't even hear the shower running." As part of its awareness drive, launched on Monday, the fire service incorporated British Sign Language into a video explaining how the sensory alarm of the life-saving devices have flashing lights, while others have vibrating Monk, the fire service's live safe manager, said she wanted to ensure fire risks in people's homes were as minimal as possible."We hope this new awareness campaign will help ensure that more people know about the specialist equipment available and encourage them to reach out for support," she added. Woman rescued and two escape from Waltham Abbey roof fire
A woman has been rescued from a roof fire County Fire & Rescue Service said the roof of the bungalow in Waltham Abbey was "100% alight" when they arrived when they were called at 22:34 GMT on people escaped from the property, on Galley Hill Road, before firefighters arrived from Harlow and Loughton, with colleagues from Cheshunt in Hertfordshire and Enfield in north London also fire service said all three occupants were left in the care of the ambulance service. M11 driver cut free after crashing with highways vehicle in Essex
A driver had to be cut free from a car after it collided with a stationary highways vehicle on a County Fire & Rescue Service, police, paramedics and highways officers were called to the M11 southbound carriageway between junction eight at Stansted Airport and junction nine for Great Chesterford at about 22:00 GMT on said the car collided with a highways roadwork protection vehicle within a closed work zone and the driver had become used hydraulic cutting equipment to free them before they were taken to hospital. The road was back open at 01:15. Photos taken by Newport Fire Station as well as Saffron Walden Fire Station shared on social media show the car involved with its roof, doors and windows highways vehicle can also be seen as firefighters work around the scene. On social media, Newport Fire Station said: "A car collided with a Highways roadwork protection vehicle which was stationary."We quickly got to work stabilising the vehicles while administering first aid to the trapped driver. "We were soon joined by Saffron Walden, we then used hydraulic cutting equipment to extricate the trapped driver from the car."Essex Police as well as the East of England Ambulance Service have been approached for comment.
