IN THE summer of 1911, when King George V came ashore at Kingstown (now Dún Laoghaire) and travelled to Dublin Castle, and just weeks before the Mona Lisa vanished from the Louvre in Paris on August 21, a small tennis tournament began on Vevay Road in Bray.
County Wicklow Lawn Tennis Club's 'Open Championship' has been held there with pride ever since and the club continues to operate from its courts on Vevay Road. That small tournament is now a significant event on the Irish tennis calendar, drawing big entries of some of Ireland's best tennis players.
