‘As the World Turns' soap opera star Eileen Fulton dead at 91
Eileen Fulton, the beloved soap opera star best known for 'As the World Turns,' has passed away. She was 91. Fulton died on Monday, July 14, in her hometown of Asheville, N.C., following 'a period of declining health,' according to an obituary from Groce Funeral Home. Born Margaret Elizabeth McLarty in Asheville on September 13, 1933, Fulton's father worked as a Methodist minister, and her mother was a public school teacher. Advertisement 'I jumped from my mother's lap and ran to the altar and sang, 'Mama's little baby loves shortening bread,'' she told CBS News in 1998. 'They couldn't shut me up, and they haven't been able to shut me up since.' After studying drama and music at Greensboro College, Fulton moved to New York City in 1956 and took classes with famed acting teachers Sanford Meisner and Lee Strasberg. 7 Eileen Fulton as Lisa Grimaldi in a 1965 episode of 'As the World Turns.' ©CBS/Courtesy Everett Collection But it wasn't until 1960 that the actress, now using the stage name Eileen Fulton, was cast as Lisa Mae Bailey in the drama film 'Girl of the Night' alongside co-star Anne Francis. Advertisement Later that same year, Fulton was cast as the conniving Lisa Grimaldi on 'As the World Turns' during the soap's fourth season. Although her character was initially supposed to have a short role in the CBS drama, Fulton remained on 'As the World Turns' until the show came to an end 50 years later in September 2010. 7 The soap opera star in 'Our Private World,' a brief spin-off of 'As the World Turns,' in 1965. 'When I went up for Lisa, she was just a nice girl next door. And just for the summer, for Bob's interest,' she added. 'I didn't want to play anything so close to myself. So I decided to just give her a background.' 7 Eileen Fulton as Lisa Grimaldi in 'As the World Turns.' ©CBS/Courtesy Everett Collection 'I thought about where her family came from. I thought about what she really wanted. And I thought amazing thoughts when I did those scenes,' Fulton continued. 'I didn't change their lines – not yet, because I knew better – but I certainly had other ideas about what I'd like to do with that Bob. And it read.' By the end of the series, Fulton's character had gone through eight husbands and dozens of different lovers. Fulton was surprised when CBS announced that 'As the World Turns' would end in 2010 after an impressive 54 seasons. 7 Eileen Fulton and the cast of 'As the World Turns' in 1971. ©CBS/Courtesy Everett Collection 'It's just a shock – it's like mother and daddy got divorced or died or something,' she said at the time. 'We're all very good at what we do, and we'll all be working again,' she added. 7 Eileen Fulton attends a farewell to the cast of 'As the World Turns' at the Paley Center for Media on August 18, 2010, in New York City. 'I have gone through two lives, my own and Lisa's, and not many actors get to do that,' she told The New York Times in 1995.

'Jurassic World Rebirth' lumbered into second place, with sales of $6.56 million on Friday, its third in theaters. 'I Know What You Did Last Summer,' the fourth installment in the horror franchise, and a reboot of the 1997 original, swiped third, taking in $5.85 million. 3 David Corenswet stars in 'Superman.' ©Warner Bros/Courtesy Everett Collection The Post called the slasher flick, which opened on Friday, 'a lot better than the 1997 version, if equally as stupid.' ‘I Know What You Did Last Summer' post-credits scene revealed — with a familiar face
Spoilers below. A word that makes 'I Know What You Did Last Summer' fans shudder? 'Still.' The 1998 sequel 'I Still Know What You Did Last Summer,' starring Jennifer Love Hewitt, Freddie Prinze Jr. and Brandy Norwood, was ripped by critics and moviegoers at the time for being a low-quality follow-up. 3 A former franchise star makes a surprise appearance during the end credits of the new 'I Know What You Did Last Summer) AP To this day, it's considered several notches below the original. But, in the post-credits sequence of the new 'I Know What You Did Last Summer,' in theaters now, one of the stars of 'Still' nonetheless returns to the freaky fold: Brandy's Karla Wilson. The shocker scene begins in a house as a TV shows a news report about the latest round of Fisherman murders in seaside Southport, North Carolina. Then a man appears. 'Isn't that your old college roommate?' he asks as Jennifer Love Hewitt's Julie James pops up onscreen. Dramatically, Brandy enters. 'Yes,' says Karla. 'People are always trying to kill that woman. I hope she's in therapy.' 3 Jennifer Love Hewitt and Brandy Norwood both survived the carnage of 'I Still Know What You Did Last Summer.' ©Columbia Pictures/Courtesy Everett Collection Then the doorbell rings, and Hewitt, who stars in the film alongside Freddie Prinze Jr. as Ray, is standing at the door. 'Julie! Oh my God, it's been years!' Karla says. 'I was watching the news, and you can't catch a damn break!' A stone-faced Julie replies, 'I need your help.' 'Who are we f–king up this time?' asks Brandy, setting up a possible sequel. In 'Still,' Julie and Karla win a radio contest that gets them a free trip to the Bahamas. But the prize is a setup. Ben Willis — aka the Fisherman serial killer — is waiting for them on the island, hook in hand. 3 One of the new stars of 'I Know What You Did Last Sumer' is Chase Sui Wonders. AP In the end, Julie and Karla both survive the Caribbean carnage. 'That was in the contract,' Brandy, 46, told Entertainment Tonight in June. 'Black people don't last in horror films, so I had to put that in the contract.' The new refresh of 'I Know What You Did Last Summer' actually mocks the spotty reputation of 'Still.' When college kid Teddy (Tyriq Withers) suggests his frightened friends just 'f–k off to the Bahamas' to avoid the wrath of the Fisherman, Prinze Jr.'s bar owner Ray glares at him. 'For reasons I cannot get into, I wouldn't do that,' he says.

Netflix profit, revenue lifted by final ‘Squid Game' season — but shares drop
The final season of global phenomenon 'Squid Game' helped Netflix top Wall Street earnings targets for the second quarter, the streaming service said Thursday as it raised revenue guidance for the year. Shares of the company, which had risen nearly 44% this year ahead of the earnings report, dropped nearly 2% to $1,252.94 in after-hours trading. The company said its higher revenue forecast 'primarily reflects the weakening of the US dollar.' 4 The final season of global phenomenon 'Squid Game' helped Netflix top Wall Street earnings targets for the second quarter. ©Netflix/Courtesy Everett Collection For April through June, Netflix posted diluted earnings per share of $7.19. That topped the $7.08 consensus estimate of analysts polled by LSEG. The company raised revenue guidance for 2025 to $44.8 billion to $45.2 billion, citing the weakening of the US dollar plus 'healthy member growth and ad sales.' Its previous guidance was up to $44.5 billion. For the just-ended quarter, net income came in at $3.1 billion, edging forecasts of $3.06 billion. Revenue totaled $11.08 billion, above the $11.07 billion analyst projection. Netflix released the third and final season of dystopian Korean drama 'Squid Game' a few days before the second quarter ended in June. The show is the most popular non-English Netflix show in the streaming service's history. Season three racked up 122 million views, Netflix said. Other releases during the quarter included 'Sirens,' 'The Four Seasons' and a third season of 'Ginny & Georgia.' 4 Netflix released the third and final season of dystopian Korean drama 'Squid Game' a few days before the second quarter ended in June REUTERS 4 Other releases during the quarter included 'Sirens,' (above) 'The Four Seasons' and a third season of 'Ginny & Georgia.' ©Netflix/Courtesy Everett Collection The streaming video pioneer stopped disclosing quarterly subscriber numbers this year, instead urging investors to focus on profit as a measure of its success. It said member growth was ahead of its forecast but occurred late in the quarter, which limited the impact on second-quarter revenue. Netflix has been building an ad-supported service to increase revenue and reel in price-sensitive viewers. It also has added live events such as WWE wrestling to draw advertisers and viewers. 4 Looking ahead, Netflix forecast revenue of $11.5 billion and net income of nearly $3 billion. Analysts had projected $11.3 billion and $2.9 billion. REUTERS Looking ahead, Netflix forecast revenue of $11.5 billion and net income of nearly $3 billion. Analysts had projected $11.3 billion and $2.9 billion. The company also has new seasons of two of its biggest shows coming later this year. 'Wednesday' returns in August, and the final episodes of 'Stranger Things' will be released in November and December. Netflix previously said it does not expect advertising to be a primary driver of revenue growth in 2025.

‘The Summer I Turned Pretty' isn't the first to explore love triangles — Why do these romantic trysts endure in pop culture?
Love is a battlefield. Buffy was torn between Angel and Spike. 'Twilight' had warring camps of 'Team Edward' and 'Team Jacob.' Now, the popular Prime Video show, 'The Summer I Turned Pretty' is back for its third and final season, following Isabel 'Belly' Conklin (Lola Tung), a teen girl torn between brothers Jeremiah (Gavin Casalegno) and Conrad (Christopher Briney). Trends come and go, but love triangles are a pop culture staple. Jennifer Prokop, a romance expert who analyzes the genre on 'Fated Mates' podcast, told The Post that most love triangles are about the main character – usually a young woman – deciding on a life path. Often, she explained, the choice between love interests is, ''I could go to a place of safety and security, or risk.' Especially when we're talking about young people, the work of young adult romance is identity development. And so, you're deciding who you want to be.' 13 Christopher Briney, Lola Tung, and Gavin Casalegno in 'The Summer I Turned Pretty.' Prime 13 Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson, and Taylor Lautner in 'The Twilight Saga: Eclipse.' Summit Entertainment Prokop added, 'A really important thing about identity development is learning how to take risks.' So, when a heroine ends up with the love interest who seemed like 'the bad boy,' that message might be, 'It's okay to take a risk. Like, yeah, you might break your heart. But so what – you'll live,' she said. That's why the trope is most common in stories about young adults coming of age, such as 'The Vampire Diaries,' 'The Summer I Turned Pretty,' 'The Hunger Games,' 'Twilight,' 'Buffy The Vampire Slayer' and 'Dawson's Creek.' 13 Paul Wesley, Nina Dobrev and Ian Somerhalder on 'The Vampire Diaries.' ©CW Network/Courtesy Everett Collection 13 Paul Wesley, Nina Dobrev and Ian Somerhalder on 'The Vampire Diaries.' ©CW Network/Courtesy Everett Collection 'The Vampire Diaries' creator Julie Plec, who presided over an iconic love triangle – Elena (Nina Dobrev), who was torn between brooding good guy vampire Stefan (Paul Wesley) and his snarky bad boy brother, Damon (Ian Somerhalder) – told The Post that the most challenging part of a love triangle is, 'its almost impossible to predict at the casting stage what you're going to get, in terms of chemistry.' Plec said that a good love triangle shouldn't be set in stone, especially in a TV show. 'When you're dealing with a show that has an infinite amount of years ahead of it, your best bet is to keep your options open,' she explained. 'You can have all the intentions in the world for a relationship, but that just doesn't show up onscreen.' 13 Ian Somerhalder, Nina Dobrev and Paul Wesley in 'The Vampire Diaries.' ©CW Network/Courtesy Everett Collection Citing another 'Vampire Diaries' love triangle of Caroline (Candice King), who was torn between her werewolf boyfriend, Tyler (Michael Trevino), and the sparks she felt with the villainous Klaus (Joseph Morgan), Plec said that Caroline's chemistry with Klaus was unplanned. 'There can be surprises where something hits you out of nowhere. As a storyteller, you want to be prepared for all those things,' she said. In a love triangle plot, 'best laid plans can be fluid – if something works that you didn't expect, or if, frankly, it doesn't work that you really were hoping would work,' said Plec. Because most love triangles are about teens and twentysomethings, audiences have less patience when stories are about older characters, Prokop said. 13 Ian Somerhalder, Nina Dobrev and Paul Wesley in 'The Vampire Diaries.' ©CW Network/Courtesy Everett Collection 13 Katherine Heigl as Stephanie Plum in 'One For the Money.' ©Lions Gate/Courtesy Everett Collection For example, she cited the 'Stephanie Plum' book series, which was adapted into the 2012 movie 'One For The Money' starring Katherine Heigl. In that story, the 30-year-old heroine is torn between two men. The love triangle in the book series is drawn out across more than twenty books, and 'people tire of that,' Prokop told The Post. 'I think [love triangles] are really hard [for older characters], because adult viewers will see that as a stalling technique, rather than an identity development kind of technique. It could be dangerous,' said Prokop. 13 David Boreanaz as Angel and Sarah Michelle Gellar as Buffy on 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer.' ©20thCentFox/Courtesy Everett Collection 13 Sarah Michelle Gellar as Buffy and James Marsters as Spike on 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer.' ©20thCentFox/Courtesy Everett Collection Bridget Chun, who hosts the podcast 'Romance at a Glance,' told The Post that in most fandoms with a love triangle, some viewers 'will always latch onto one character.' 'Now, there might be something where they cheat on [their love interest] in Season 3. Or, you have to do something devastating to get someone who's rooting for someone to change their mind,' she said. 'I think the important thing is that both [options in a love triangle] be feasible options — especially in the beginning.' Plec had firsthand experience with trying to orchestrate audience expectations. 'When you're planning a long-running show and a long-running love triangle, you want to wait as long as humanly possible before you get the second half of the couple together,' she explained. 13 James Van Der Beek, Katie Holmes, and Joshua Jackson on 'Dawson's Creek.' Courtesy Everett Collection However, 'TVD' fans who were rooting for Elena and Damon to be together had such 'powerful intensity….we kept having to make choices trying to change their minds about wanting it so quickly.' But, it didn't work, because, 'Each choice we made just further cemented their desire to have it.' 'We were having Damon do really terrible things that had catastrophic consequences for all the other characters,' she explained. 'In our efforts to slow down the freight train of Elena and Damon…a lot of people had to die.' Chun, meanwhile, recalled watching the 'Dawson's Creek' finale in high school with her soccer team. On that show, the ending resolved the love triangle between Joey (Katie Holmes), Dawson (James Van Der Beek) and Pacey (Joshua Jackson). 13 Josh Hutcherson and Jennifer Lawrence in 'The Hunger Games.' Lionsgate/Kobal/Shutterstock 'I was like, 'If she doesn't choose Pacey at the end of this episode, I'm going to flip a ping pong table over!'' she recalled. Years after 'Dawson's Creek,' Chun is now a fan of 'The Summer I Turned Pretty' — and is rooting for Belly to end up with Jeremiah. 'I think you can find 'evidence' for your side, especially in a good show.…having that chat is so fun,' she told The Post. 'I mean, it can be so toxic. It can be crazy. People [in fandoms] go way too far, I think.' Case in point: the official social media accounts for 'The Summer I Turned Pretty' put out a message imploring fans to be 'kind' and reminding them against 'bullying,' ahead of the Season 3 premiere (now streaming). 13 Lola Tung, Christopher Briney and Gavin Casalegno in 'The Summer I Turned Pretty.' ©Amazon/Courtesy Everett Collection Plec recalled that at the height of 'The Vampire Diaries' popularity, some of the 'volume of response' of the fandom feedback on social media could get, 'legitimately scary.' But, Chun said there's an upside to the fandoms rooting for different 'teams' of a love triangle, too. 'It can definitely bond you together,' Chun noted. 'If you find a group of friends and you're like, 'Oh my God, you guys love [this relationship] too?' I have one friend where, we're going to watch the show together when it premieres. But she's rooting for Conrad. So it'll be fun for us to both be like, 'No! That's terrible!'' 13 Jennifer Lawrence and Liam Hemsworth in 'The Hunger Games.' Lionsgate/Kobal/Shutterstock Prokop suggested that love triangles are especially rooted in American culture. 'There's nothing more American than the idea that if you make the right series of choices, things will turn out right for you. And, for a lot of people, that includes who they marry or [end up with].' 'So I think maybe it has to do with a very particular kind of belief that we're a series of choices,' as opposed to how some other cultures believe, 'we're a series of coincidences. Or, we're a series of community building activities.' When asked if creators of love triangles feel stressed out about the possibility of disappointing half the audience, Plec laughed and said, 'Yes – exclamation point!'
