The build-up to the finale has been dominated by speculation around India's playing XI, particularly the availability of pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah and the possible debut of left-arm quick Arshdeep Singh . It became two-all,' Karthik pointed out. 'Before that, when England were 2-1 in 2018, they went on to comfortably win at The Oval. Put everything into context. How much of an impetus is this game for India?' Vaughan responded: 'Even if they lose at The Oval, I've seen enough in this series to say this young Indian team is going to be fine. But if Shubman Gill can win at the Oval and make it 2-2, it'll be massive. England has been one of the hardest places to tour in the last 15-20 years.' On India's bowling options, Vaughan was clear: 'Arshdeep Singh – left-armer for the off-spinner,' when asked to choose between Arshdeep and Prasidh Krishna. Karthik followed up: 'But you're not playing Kuldeep?' Vaughan replied: 'No, unless it's a really dry one. Then maybe three and three. But I can't imagine it'll be that dry.' Vaughan's final verdict was unambiguous: Arshdeep Singh should get the nod, while Kuldeep Yadav might miss out unless the surface turns out to be unusually dry. Shubman Gill Receives Massive Verdict Amid Handshake Row: 'Not Scared To Poke...'

Former England cricket team skipper Michael Vaughan was quite impressed with Shubman Gill 's leadership in the ongoing Test series. The India-England series was the first one for Gill as a captain but his batting performances as well as courtageous outlook has earned him a lot of praise. While India are trailing 1-2 in the five-match series, the young side has shown a lot of fight and Gill has been leading from the front. Vaughan praised Gill for the aggression that he has shown on the pitch and how he has backed his teammates in multiple situation during the series when tempers flared on the pitch. "I like to see a young captain with a little bit of authority. I've actually loved the way that he has spoken. He's not been scared to kind of poke the bear. You've got to stand up for your teammates, for what you believe as a team. So far, in Shubman Gill, I am seeing a captain that is willing to do that," Vaughan said on Cricbuzz. Gill got into an on-field spat with Zak Crawley during the third match and during the fourth Test at Old Trafford, he once again backed his batters during the entire 'handshake' controversy. Former India wicket-keeper batter Dinesh Karthik was all praise for Gill as well and credited him for how he handled the situation towards the end of the fourth Test. "He came in as a young captain and people were not sure how it is going to pan out, but I can tell you, we have got a bona fide superstar as a Test captain because of the guts that he is showing as a batter, because of how much he stands his ground about what he believes in. The last 10-15 minutes, the way it unfolded, he was just standing there in the balcony, literally poker face saying, 'Get out there, get your hundreds'," Dinesh Karthik said.

'What's with the English?' — Karthik, Vaughan weigh in on Stokes vs Jadeja-Washington handshake drama

England captain Ben Stokes speaks with Ravindra Jadeja in Manchester. (Getty Images) NEW DELHI: Tempers flared and opinions clashed long after India and England shook hands at Old Trafford, as the handshake that didn't happen earlier became the main talking point following the drawn fourth Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. With India recovering from 0/2 in their second innings to end Day 5 on 425/4, centuries from Ravindra Jadeja (107*) and Washington Sundar (101*) helped them not only save the Test but dominate the final day. 'What's with the English?' he asked during a post-match discussion with Michael Vaughan on Cricbuzz. 'At Lord's, they didn't want to come to bat, didn't want to field after a point. And now here, they wanted to shake hands early. How does that sit well with you?' India stay alive, England frustrated after draw; handshake drama at Old Trafford and more Vaughan, to his credit, took a measured stance: 'Oh, if I'd have been India, I'd have done exactly the same. You've fought the entire day, taken blows, worn bouncers from Archer. You get to 85, you stay out there. Shubman's smile from the balcony said it all.' Karthik continued, 'Look, at lunch, India were down and out. People thought they'd be rolled over. But Gill and KL steadied things, then Jadeja and Washington finished it brilliantly. Even the lowest scorer after ducks — KL Rahul — got 90!' Vaughan agreed, noting how England, too, wouldn't have acted differently: 'If we had a young player on 85, no way would we have come off. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Swelling and internal bleeding in the brain, help this baby Donate For Health Donate Now Undo We'd have said, 'Get your hundred, then we'll shake hands.' 'Did He Get His Captaincy Right?': Dinesh Karthik Questions Shubman Gill's Leadership

Dinesh Karthik has reviewed Shubman Gill's captaincy, noting his enjoyment and control despite strategic errors. Former Indian cricketer Dinesh Karthik has said that although Shubman Gill is probably enjoying the fact that he is the captain and can control the narrative in multiple ways, he didn't always get his strategies right and would look back on certain decisions and ponder over them. Coming on the back of a string of poor scores, including one in the first innings of the Manchester Test, Gill had a huge role to play with the score reading 0/2 in the second innings. Gill stood tall for the team when needed, responding with his fourth half-century of the series. He finished unbeaten on 78 runs off 167 balls to keep India alive in the contest ahead of the final day. 'I think he's enjoying the fact that he is a captain because he can control the narrative in a lot of ways. Did he get his captaincy right? I don't think so. There are areas where he will look back and say, 'I could have done this better,'" Karthik said while speaking on Cricbuzz. 'Starting from the playing XI he chose, to the kind of bowling changes he made," Karthik added. Gill has scored 697 runs in eight innings in the series till now at a stunning average of 99.57. The skilled duo of Gill and KL Rahul could have taken more risks against left-arm spinner Liam Dawson, but both did play some sizzling drives against the pacers. England tried plenty of things in the final session, including peppering the well-set pair with short balls, but Rahul and Gill were unfazed. England have targeted Gill's pads, sensing a weakness, but the Indian skipper found a way to survive a lethal spell from Jofra Archer. In the afternoon session, Gill overcame initial jitters for a hard-fought half-century, leading India's show of resistance in a wicketless afternoon session to leave the visitors at 86/2. England pacers, especially Archer, hurled inswingers into Gill's pads, but the Indian skipper was able to survive those testing moments before playing sumptuous strokes. Gill had the luck on his side as well, as he was dropped by Dawson off Brydon Carse at backward point on 46. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
