Harlingen doctor becomes first Democrat to challenge GOP Rep. Monica De La Cruz for South Texas congressional seat
Ada Cuellar, a Harlingen-based emergency physician, launched her campaign for Texas' 15th Congressional District on Thursday, becoming the first Democrat to run for the South Texas seat that her party is targeting in the 2026 midterms. Anchored in Hidalgo County along the border and running north to the edge of San Antonio, the district — represented by Rep. Monica De La Cruz, R-Edinburg — has been emblematic of Democrats' recent struggles throughout the Rio Grande Valley and with Latino voters generally. De La Cruz first won office in 2022, becoming the first Republican to represent the district after it was redrawn to favor Republicans. The seat has been in Democrats' crosshairs ever since. But South Texas was the epicenter of a national rightward shift in 2024 among Latinos, who make up about three-quarters of the 15th District's eligible voting-age population, according to U.S. Census Bureau data. President Donald Trump was the first Republican to win Hidalgo County in decades, improving from a 28% vote share in 2016 to 51% last year. Whoever wins the Democratic nomination will likely face an uphill battle. De La Cruz won reelection by 14 points in 2024, despite the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee and other national groups targeting it as a potential pickup. The district leans Republican by a 7-point margin, according to the Cook Partisan Voting Index. While Cuellar — who has no relation to Rep. Henry Cuellar, D-Laredo — is the first candidate to officially announce, Tejano music star Bobby Pulido has also been floated as a potential candidate. Pulido said he planned to enter politics in 2026, and he has been heavily recruited by Democrats, according to Politico. Cuellar lives outside the district boundary, in the district of Rep. Vicente Gonzalez, D-McAllen. She is from Weslaco and went to college in Edinburg. Members of Congress do not have to live in the district they represent, though residing outside the boundaries can open candidates to attacks from their opponents. De La Cruz is the only Texas Republican the DCCC currently lists among its 2026 targets. But the spectre of redistricting, which could put more seats in play and upend the state's political map, is hanging over both parties. South Texas is a key area where Republican map-drawers will likely try to draw friendlier seats by targeting De La Cruz's Democratic neighbors, meaning the contours of the 15th District could change. Under any new map, the district's population is likely to remain overwhelmingly Hispanic — meaning Democrats will need to reverse their recent slide to have any chance of recapturing the seat. Cuellar, a 43-year-old Rio Grande Valley native, believes Latino voters, in particular, were looking for change last cycle as they felt the bite of high costs fueled by inflation. She believes Democrats can position themselves as the party of change in 2026, especially on issues like health care, after Republicans including De La Cruz voted for Medicaid cuts as part of Trump's recently enacted megabill. 'People are frustrated with health care costs, inflation, the economy, how difficult it is to succeed,' Cuellar said. 'And I think a lot of frustrations were directed towards the Democratic Party.' Democrats flipped the U.S. House in 2018 — including through pickups in Texas — largely by talking about Republicans' efforts to quash the Affordable Care Act. Democrats hope to follow a similar playbook in 2026 by homing in on the Medicaid and ACA cuts in the megabill. Groups have been actively recruiting physicians like Cuellar to run for office as part of that pitch. During her campaign, Cuellar said she also plans to discuss the need for a county hospital and more doctors in the district, along with plans to make health care more affordable. Rangers cult hero lands shock new manager job just weeks after signing new contract as fans bemoan ‘a sad day'
Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) FORMER Rangers defender Carlos Cuellar has taken another step up in his managerial career. The Ibrox cult hero has decided to switch teams just weeks after agreeing a new deal at his now previous employer. Sign up for the Rangers newsletter Sign up 3 Carlos Cuellar was a big favourite at Rangers Credit: Andrew Barr - The Sun Glasgow 3 He's landed a new managerial role Cuellar, 43, spent just one season with Rangers but it was a more than memorable one. A £2.37million signing from La Liga outfit Osasuna, the Spanish centre-back proved a superb acquisition for Gers boss Walter Smith. Cuellar played an integral role as the Light Blues made it all the way to the Uefa Cup Final and went head-to-head with Celtic for the SPL title. Although those two competitions wouldn't go Rangers' way, the Gers would end the season with two trophies after winning the Scottish Cup and League Cup. Cuellar's stunning form alerted several clubs and after just a year at Ibrox, he moved to Aston Villa in a bumper £7.8m deal in August 2008. He's since admitted leaving Rangers was one of the saddest days of his career. After Rangers, Cuellar spent seven years in England before spells back in Spain and in Israel before the end of his career. He moved into coaching and for the past two years he's been the manager of Real Murcia's B team, who play in the fifth tier of Spanish football. They came close to a promotion in his first campaign in charge and narrowly missed out on the play-offs last time around. At the end of May, Murcia announced that Cuellar had extended his deal with the club to continue as boss this season, congratulating him on his new contract. Winger deal ON, but is it Conor Coady Plus is Jamie Vardy a target But just over six weeks later, Cuellar has LEFT the role. He's joined Elche to become head coach of their B team, in a move that seems him move from the fifth tier to the fourth level. Murcia confirmed that Cuellar had "having recently renewed his contract, informed the club of his intention to leave for a higher division team." At the same time, Elche confirmed Cuellar's arrival as the B team's new boss. Many Murcia fans were disappointed to see the former Gers man's exit. One said: "Very bad news. I think it's understandable that he's leaving. What I don't understand is that Elche would hand us a coach who just renewed his contract." A second posted: "It's a shame, he made us dream of a promotion from Imperial and he was doing a great job." While a third added: "Terrible news for the Grana youth academy! Sad day." Another one wasn't surprised to see him leave, commenting: "It's a shame, but here with the first team already closed, he had no further jump and going to a reserve team of a first division team is a leap in his career." Cuellar exclusively joined SunSport for an interview late last year where he revealed his ambitions to one day manage Rangers. 3 Quizzed on whether he'd love to be offered the Light Blues boss gig one day, Cuellar responded: "I wish! "It was my dream, to be honest. You realise how big it is when you are inside it. You knew. "You realise and you even understand how big it is from the outside to be inside before." Crossing his fingers, he continued: "To be honest, that day - I wish. Fingers crossed it happens. "I would cry for sure because it would be one of the happiest days of my life." Man accused of biting, kicking ICE, DEA officers during arrest in Marlborough
A man arrested in Marlborough is accused of biting, kicking and hitting federal law enforcement officers when he was taken into custody, United States Attorney Leah B. Foley said in a Thursday statement. Guido Andres Cuellar Batres, 24, a Guatemalan national, overstayed his non-immigrant visa by more than four years, leading to an outstanding immigration warrant for his arrest, the statement said. On May 4, three Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers and a Drug Enforcement Administration agent conducting surveillance in a Marlborough parking lot spotted Cuellar in the front passenger seat of a car. The officers, wearing law enforcement garments, approached the car and ordered Cuellar to get out of the vehicle, in Spanish and English, according to Foley's statement. He refused and, despite instructions to keep his hands visible, he reached down in the front passenger seat, which led officers to break the rear passenger side window and unlock the front passenger door, according to the statement. The officers removed Cuellar from the vehicle, but he did not cooperate when they tried to handcuff him. According to Foley's statement, Cuellar bit one officer in the hand and another in the leg, hit an officer in the head multiple times, and spat in an officer's face, Foley's statement read. Once he was handcuffed and placed in leg restraints, Cuellar continued to kick at officers, the statement reads. Cuellar is charged with one count of forcibly assaulting, resisting, opposing, impeding, intimidating or interfering with federal officers engaged in the performance of official duties. He is being held in ICE custody and will appear in federal court in Boston at a date to be determined. 'The charge of forcibly assaulting, resisting, opposing, impeding, intimidating, or interfering with federal officers engaged in the performance of official duties provides for a sentence of up to eight years in prison, three years of supervised release and a fine of $250,000,' the statement reads.
