Curro netball teams claim end-of-season silverware

Curro Salt Rock ended their outdoor netball season by claiming four medals at the Kingsway High School Grand Slam Netball Finals on Saturday (June 7). Six schools from across the province competed in the series, with only the top four teams in each age group making the competition. All of Curro's high school 'A' teams qualified for the medal matches in Amanzimtoti at the weekend. Kingsway High School, Hoërskool Suid-Natal and Gelofte Skool also qualified for the final four, while Kuswag Skool and Crawford La Lucia fell away. The 1st team capped a trophy-laden 2025 season with another piece of silverware by collecting silver on the south coast. They were matched by the U15A team, while both the U16A and U14A teams claimed bronze.

Curro Salt Rock golfers win national tournament at Sun City

Curro Salt Rock's high school golf team returned triumphant from the prestigious Westville Boys' High School Sun City Golf Festival earlier this month. Held annually in the Pilanesberg National Park, the Westville Sun City Golf Festival took place from April 29 to May 2. After finishing in an impressive fourth last year, Curro (+13) shot to a memorable title this time around, beating Paul Roos A (+21) by eight strokes. Inspired by a chance meeting with double World Cup-winning Springboks coach Rassie Erasmus while out to dinner, the school finished first against many of South Africa's most illustrious schools. One hundred and eighty competitors from 32 schools competed over four days at the Gary Player Country Club and Lost City Golf Courses. Curro claimed the Team Net Score title and team captain Tamika Wolfe (17) reigned supreme, winning the Ladies' title (+9). At the same time, twin brothers Hiratio (2nd) and Kyden Ward (8th) finished in the top 10 of the Individual Net Score competition, with Hiratio (-10) claiming the runner-up spot. 'Winning the Team Nett Score is an absolutely incredible feeling; we are so proud of Hiratio,' said Wolfe. 'It is such a sense of pride and accomplishment, with all the hours of practice finally paying off. Taking home the title in the ladies' section makes winning even more special. Knowing that I worked hard to achieve such a great result made me feel proud, but captaining the team to victory was the cherry on top!' Coach Eugene 'Monty' Montgomery praised his young team, noting that the Ward twins flew back mid-tournament to KZN to participate in provincial age-group rugby trials, returning the following day in time to tee off. 'I'm proud of my team, especially Tamika, whose leadership and performance were exceptional. Their focus – especially the twins – dedication, discipline and commitment paid off,' he said. The former Curro headmaster added that the pep-talk given by coach Rassie helped focus the players. 'He was so good and accommodating with the kids, not like some of his Bok team-talks,' laughed Monty. 'I think the team really took on board his advice, which helped their collective performance.' Hillcrest outscores Curro in Monday night hockey doubleheader

Curro Salt Rock's 1st team hockey sides suffered back-to-back defeats to Hillcrest High School at home on Monday night. The hosts returned from the holiday period 'rusty' and lethargic, while old foe Hillcrest looked sharper under the floodlights. Curro's girls' 1st team – coming off an impressive 1-0 victory over Gelofte last week – played first, losing a close-fought contest 1-0. Afterwards, the boys went down 2-0 in an end-to-end match against their Highways opponents. Both Curro teams created chances but failed to convert them. Earlier in the season, Hillcrest's girls beat Curro 4-0 in a 40-minute match. On Monday, the match could have gone either way but for some superb defending by the visitors. In the first match, Curro's girls conceded from a penalty corner just after halftime. Later, in the fourth chukka, they had a shot cleared off the line that led to a penalty. However, Hillcrest's goalkeeper stood firm, saving the penalty to give her side a second win of the season against their hosts. Curro's boys' 1st team beat the visitors 2-1 in both matches earlier in the season. The sides then drew 1-1 at St Dunstan's Sports Festival, but Hillcrest prevailed 2-1 in the shootout. Curro boys' 1st team head coach Kevin Mason was concerned with his team's performance, citing lethargy from the holiday period. 'We were not at our best today – a bit rusty. We seemed to still be recovering from our holiday,' he said. 'We tried hard, but they were too good. We need to work on our play, but we have a match against a touring team from India on Thursday to prepare us for Saturday's hockey tournament.' The Curro Salt Rock Sports Festival takes place on Saturday, featuring hockey, rugby, and netball. Both hockey teams will look to get back to winning ways in front of their home support when the school takes on Scindia School from the sub-continent in a warm-up game before the weekend. The Curro hockey tournament will begin at 8am, with teams playing a group stage format before the playoffs. Matches will consist of two 12-minute halves to accommodate the full fixture list.
