High school boys lacrosse: Christian Brothers Academy takes over in second half, denies Watertown sectional title
Jun. 5—CICERO — The Watertown boys lacrosse team stood one half away from winning an elusive sectional title. The Cyclones built a lead through the first half and seemed poised to accomplish their goal, only to be turned away. Advertisement Top-seeded Christian Brothers Academy rallied after halftime to down second-seeded Watertown for a 9-6 triumph in the Section 3 Class B title game Monday on a hot and muggy evening at Cicero-North Syracuse High School. "We fought hard," Cyclones goalie Norman Cushman said. "The defense played really well and it was kind of tough for us on offense, but everybody worked hard." Nico Spaziani generated four goals to lead Watertown (14-4), which competed in a sectional final for the second straight season. "I don't know, I think we all left our hearts out there," Watertown senior Owen O'Donnell said. "It's tough, we had a good first half, but we didn't win, we just couldn't get it done." Advertisement The Cyclones got off to a strong start, backed by another stalwart defensive effort, on the way to building a 5-3 advantage through the first half. Spaziani scored three of his goals in the first half to spark Watertown early on. "We played a great first half," Watertown coach Brian Navarra said. "We wore them down a little bit in the first half, we were going back and forth, the defense was good, Norman was making saves and clearing the ball, Nico really stepped up in that first half." That's when CBA took over, dominating in the possession game and holding Watertown to only one goal after halftime. Advertisement The Brothers scored the next five goals, including generating four tallies in the third quarter. After Vin Lazzaro scored in the first minute of the third quarter and Ben Anderson followed with the tying goal from long range 4:23 into the period. Lazzaro struck again by generating the go-ahead goal, again an unassisted effort, with 52.9 seconds left in the quarter. With CBA leading 6-5 heading into the fourth quarter, Lazzaro scored 1:16 into the fourth and Liam Harty followed with a goal with 9:39 remaining in regulation to boost the lead to three goals. Watertown answered on a goal from Spaziani with 7:30 remaining in regulation to pull his team within 8-6. Advertisement But CBA won the ensuing faceoff and Lazzaro added a goal with 1:20 left for the final margin. "We couldn't really get going offensively," Navarra said of the second half. "Jack Adams is hurt, he can't really run, he was giving his all. But he initiates a lot of our offense, at least to draw slides and distribute to other guys, so that kind of hurt a little bit. "But I don't know, we played so much defense and when we got on offense we kind of rushed a little too much and that caught up with us." The Brothers set the tone for much of the night, winning 14 of 19 faceoffs, including seven in the second half. Advertisement "It was huge," CBA coach Jeremy Boltus said of the second half. "We were a little bit bummed, we talked about it, we got opportunities in the first half, we just didn't take advantage of it. But like all year, our defense kind of put us on their shoulders a little bit. "Drew Britton was phenomenal in net, they started executing the game plan a little bit more, stopping Nico, who is just an incredible player. And I told them once we get warm, the avalanche is probably going to come and thankfully we did and we're just really thankful for it." With CBA controlling the ball, Watertown went scoreless for nearly 23 minutes of the game. "So we were happy with where we were at in the first half, we only gave up three goals and we were fine, in good shape," Navarra said. "We knew we needed more from our offense and then, I don't know, everything kind of died in the second half, quite honestly. Advertisement "We burnt right out, we stopped doing the little things right, that's going to cost you in a game like this. Stopped getting ground balls, giving the top side to certain offensive guys, little mistakes killed us." The Cyclones got off to an encouraging start, with Kage Loftus, Spaziani each scoring a goal in the first quarter to build a 3-1 advantage. Spaziani supplied two goals in the second quarter, including a tally with 4:46 left to stake the Cyclones to the 5-3 advantage. Cushman made 20 saves, with of them coming in the first half, as Watertown contained CBA offensively for much of the opening 24 minutes. Advertisement Lazzaro finished with four goals, and Jack Wichmann contributed a pair of goals to spark CBA (15-3). "It feels great, I give all the credit to the players, Boltus said. "They've stayed the course throughout the three years from when I took over to this point." Watertown played in the final after reaching a sectional title game for the first time last year. "Next year we've got to come back stronger," Cushman, a sophomore, added. "We played well, just not quite enough." Navarra is proud of what the team, led by its senior class, has accomplished, not just season, but for what the program as a whole has achieved. "It's tough, this one is going to sting for a while." Navarra said. "It's just such an awesome group of seniors with 12 guys that are going to be sorely missed. This senior group, not only were the game changers and season changers, they were program changers, they changed the scope of the program and they'll be sorely missed."

Nebraska hosts rising 2028 lineman over the weekend
Nebraska hosts rising 2028 lineman over the weekend Nebraska football hosted class of 2028 offensive lineman Hayden Shannon on Sunday. The announcement was made by Shannon on social media. Shannon is not ranked in the Rivals rankings, but his profile is growing. He has one offer on the table at the moment, as Nebraska did so on March 29. He took an unofficial visit to the program that same day. He is being recruited to Nebraska by offensive line coach Donovan Raiola. Shannon measures in at six-foot-four, 275 pounds. It's worth noting that he also has an interest in Iowa and Iowa State. The Cyclones have recruited well in the state of Nebraska in the 2026 class, and are making another push in the state. Nebraska has zero commitments in the 2028 class. It would be reasonable to expect an uptick in visits over the next couple of weeks, with many coming for future classes. Shannon would add another talented offensive lineman for a program that has built strong depth at the position over the last couple of classes. Why Canadian military's Cyclone helicopters were grounded for 27 days in May
Article content The Canadian military's Cyclone helicopters weren't flying for 27 days in May due to a lack of spare parts, and only one of them is now able to take to the skies. Article content Article content Canada has 26 of the ship-borne maritime helicopters, with a final one slated for delivery this year. The $5.8-billion fleet is normally used to provide air support for the Royal Canadian Navy. Their missions include surface and subsurface surveillance, search and rescue, and anti-submarine warfare. Article content Article content DND, the military and Sikorsky, which manufactured the helicopters, 'have been working together to identify potential parts of concern. This includes components of the Cyclone's landing gear, tail rotor driveshaft flange and auxiliary power unit, as well as engine parts,' Sadiku said. As of this past Wednesday, one Cyclone, now on deployment, returned to flying operations, he said. 'The team works to do the same for the rest of the fleet.' The Cyclone 'fleet is currently facing some challenges, such as aging datalink systems as well as sensor and other capabilities that are overdue for important upgrades,' he said. 'Specific details, however, cannot be provided for reasons of operational security.' Military and government officials 'are working together with industry partners to determine a way forward for the aircraft and the capabilities it supports,' Sadiku said. Article content 'The Cyclone remains capable of supporting Royal Canadian Navy operations and will continue to do so for the foreseeable future.' Sadiku wouldn't confirm Sikorsky has put a hefty price tag on replacing the Cyclones' ageing datalinks — used to communicate digital information such as radar images to other aircraft, warships and shore bases. 'The datalink upgrade project is still under evaluation, as such, schedule and costs are still being negotiated.' The military has flown other helicopters off the navy's warships before. 'In the past, CH-146 Griffons have landed on Royal Canadian Navy vessels in certain operational contexts (specifically, the relief efforts to Haiti in the wake of the 2010 earthquake,' Sadiku said. 'However, none of the Royal Canadian Air Force's helicopter fleets (besides the CH-148 Cyclone) are capable of fulfilling the maritime helicopter role in support of the Royal Canadian Navy.' Article content Paul Martin's Liberal government announced in 2004 that the Cyclones would replace Canada's ageing fleet of CH-124 Sea King helicopters. 'The Cyclones are what we call an orphan fleet,' said retired colonel Larry McWha, an aviation expert who commanded 423 Maritime Helicopter Squadron at 12 Wing Shearwater, when it flew Sea Kings. That means many suppliers aren't interested in producing parts for the Cyclones, McWha said. 'It's going to cost us money to keep (the fleet) viable.' McWha lives on Nova Scotia's Eastern Shore. 'I used to see Sea Kings flying by here all the time,' he said. 'I have extremely rarely ever seen a Cyclone flying by.' Canada lost a Cyclone on April 29, 2020 when one of the helicopters crashed into the Ionian Sea, claiming the lives of six Canadian Armed Forces members. Months later, senior military officials said there was a 'conflict' or 'competition' between the Cyclone and its pilot moments before the aircraft, known as Stalker 22, plunged into the water off the coast of Greece. Iowa State Football Preview 2025: The Cyclones Are the Team To Root For
X CFN, Fiu | CFN Facebook | Bluesky Fiu, CFN2025 Iowa State Preview Iowa State Offense Breakdown Iowa State Defense Breakdown Season Prediction, Win Total, Keys to Season If you're here, you're either a fan of Iowa State sports, or you're simply a die-hard college football fan, or maybe both. No matter what the reason, if there's one thing to know about Cyclone football, it's this …If you're looking for a random team to root for, this is it. And why?Iowa State has been playing college football, at least as an acknowledged program, since 1895. In all of that time, it has just two pieces of a conference title. In 1911 and 1912, Iowa State was the co-champion of the Missouri Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Association. Oh sure, the tie for the Big 12 North title in 2004, but it was only 4-4 in Big 12 play, and Colorado went on to get walloped by why the run to the Big 12 Championship game was such a big deal, and why the loss to Arizona State was so disappointing. A win would've been the school's first outright conference title, and it would've meant a trip to the College Football Playoff, a first round bye, and - as it turned out - a shot at Texas in the Chick-fil-A Peach the Cyclones lost 45-19 and went on to play in the Pop-Tarts Bowl, beating Miami 42-41, partly because Hurricane quarterback Cam Ward quit on his team at the end of the first half once he set the D-I record for touchdown passes. So 2024 was ultimately a disappointment, right? Far from it. It was still the best season in the history of Iowa State program had never won ten games in a season before last year. It won 11. It was also the second time in five seasons that Iowa State took a bite at the championship apple - in 2020 it lost to Oklahoma 27-21. The 2025 Cyclones, in a lot of ways, are better. The receiving corps and defensive line should take a step back, and the O line could use a little work, but the skill parts are strong, the defensive back seven/eight should be terrific, and there's no team on the slate the Cyclones can't a fun team with a fan base that knows how to get fired up for its school, the moment, and the success. But to get over the hump, it needs to get a wee bit more out of the …Iowa State Offense Breakdown Iowa State Defense Breakdown Season Prediction, Win Total, Keys to Season © 2025 The Arena Group Holdings, Inc. Nine of them were generated in the first four games, and three more came against Texas Tech. He'll be great in the Texas A&M rotation. Iowa State Key Game Kansas State, Aug. 23It really, really stinks to have the first game of the season - and the Big 12 opener - on August 23rd in Dublin, Ireland, but that's the 29-21 win over the Wildcats last year got the Cyclones into the Big 12 Championship.
