100 Kerry pubs close since 2005 with US tariffs likely to cause further decline
A decline of 19.7 per cent (99 pubs) in 19 years is reflective of a worrying trend, nationally, that has led to 2,100 pubs closing during the same time period. DIGI say the high cost of doing business was a major contributory factor to the alarming rate of closures with research showing a further 1,000 pubs could close over the coming decade. It added that without immediate action, many villages and small towns will soon lose their last remaining pub, dealing a devastating blow to the economic and social fabric of communities. DIGI has called on the government to use the upcoming budget to introduce a 10 per cent cut in excise. Ireland currently has the second highest rate in the European Union. The report, compiled by Economist and Associate Professor Emeritus at DCU, Anthony Foley, shows that an average of 112 pubs stopped trading every year, with a further 600 to 1,000 closures estimated over the next decade. All 26 counties experienced declines in pub numbers between 2005 to 2024. The highest decrease was in Limerick (-37.2 per cent), followed by Offaly (-34.1 per cent) Cork (-32.7 per cent), Roscommon (-32.3 per cent), Tipperary (-32.0 per cent), Laois (-30.6 per cent), Longford (-30.1 per cent) and Westmeath (-30.0 per cent). The lowest decrease was in Dublin with a drop of -1.7 per cent, followed by Meath with a decrease of -9.5 per cent. Wicklow had a decrease of 10.8 per cent and all other counties saw a 13 per cent or greater decrease. 'The addition of profound economic uncertainty through US trade tariffs and reduced levels of inbound tourism further threaten the financial foundations of family-owned pubs across the country. In the absence of government intervention, we are likely to see a further 600 to 1,000 pubs close over the coming decade,' said report author, Professor Tony Foley. DIGI secretary, Donall O'Keeffe said government could improve commercial viability overnight by cutting excise. 'With Irish consumption of alcohol having fallen to average EU levels, and likely to continue dropping, it is no longer justifiable that pubs should be faced with the second-highest excise rates in Europe. This is on top of a hefty 23 per cent VAT rate. The time for the Government to act is now before it is too late,' said Mr O'Keeffe.

Superman Day 9 India Box Office: David Corenswet and Rachel Brosnahan's film observes good 80 percent growth from Friday BUT...
Superman, directed by James Gunn and starring David Corenswet, Rachel Brosnahan, Nicholas Hoult and others, grew by a good 80 percent from 2nd Friday to net Rs 3 crore on its 2nd Saturday. Clubbed with its first 8 day collections, the total of the James Gunn directorial stands at Rs 37.40 crore. By the end of the 2nd weekend, Superman should be standing at a number of over Rs 40 crore net. The Day Wise India Net Collections Of Superman Are As Under Particulars India Net Collections Week 1 Rs 32.75 crore 2nd Friday Rs 1.65 crore 2nd Saturday Rs 3 crore Total Rs 37.40 crore in 9 days Superman's Collections In India So Far Are Underwhelming; To Cross Rs 40 Crore Net On Day 10 The total collections of Superman after 9 days are slightly underwhelming. The movie should have been doing significantly better than what it is doing. In the weekdays, the day-on-day collections of a 3 and a half week old film, F1, should be higher. Jurassic World: Rebirth, over its 3rd weekend, is already ahead and that's enough proof of the superhero film's underperformance in India. As things stand, a Rs 50 crore net finish is what is expected from Superman. Even that depends on how the film reacts once Fantastic Four: First Steps releases. Superman Is Doing Exceptionally In The Domestic Markets Superman is performing better in the domestic markets. It has crossed USD 200 million in US/Canada on 2nd Saturday and is heading for a lifetime of USD 375 million or so. The global collections of the David Corenswet film shall have crossed USD 400 million by the end of its second weekend, setting the movie well for a lifetime cume of over USD 600 million. Given how DC has been losing credibility over the last few years, these are really appreciable numbers. If James Gunn propels DCU in the right direction, the brand will get back the dedicated following it once enjoyed. There surely is a lot of scope left in this Comic Book brand. Superman In Theatres

James Gunn Already Has a Brilliant Fix For DC's Most Brutal Firing
When James Gunn took over the new direction for DC's superhero movies, one of the earliest decisions was about letting go of Henry Cavill as the then-incumbent Superman. In a new interview with Josh Horowitz for the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Gunn revealed, for the first time, the painful moment in which he and producer Peter Safran told Cavill that the actor would not be returning as Superman. However, within this sad story, there's a silver lining: Gunn made it 100 percent clear he's already talked about bringing Cavill back to the DCU, as a totally different character. While Gunn admits that it was "terrible" to have to directly let Cavill go, he did reveal that he and Safran met with Cavill in person rather than make a phone call. Speaking to Horowitz, Gunn described Cavill as an "absolute gentleman" and said that Cavill asked that he "be able to reveal it himself," meaning that Cavill wanted to be able to tell the public he wasn't coming back as Superman in a future DC film. And then Horowitz asked Gunn the big question: "Would it be too confusing to cast him in your DC universe?" Gunn's answer was clear. It would "absolutely not" be too confusing. "As another character?" Gunn said. "We talked to him about it on that day. I would love to put Henry in something." As of now, there's already a precedent for this kind of thing. Jason Momoa, who played Aquaman in six films for the now-defunct DCEU continuity, will star as Lobo in the DCU's Supergirl next year. This isn't something that could happen; this is something that has already happened. And, in case any forgot, Momoa starred alongside Cavill's Superman in both versions of Justice League. So, yes, Gunn could fix DC's most brutal firing by bringing Henry Cavill back as a totally different DC character. The only question now is who? Obviously, the most hilarious move would be to hire Cavill as a new DCU version of Batman/Bruce Wayne, though that feels very unlikely. At the same time, there are plenty of villains Cavill could play in the DCU. In fact, imagining him as Brainiac or Darkseid already feels kind of awesome. There are also, of course, other Kryptonians that Cavill could play. For example, if James Gunn wanted to do storylines about the "Bottle City of Kandor" (a shrunken part of Krypton that Superman sometimes keeps in the Fortress of Solitude), Cavill could play the Kryptonian hero Van-Zee, a cousin of Superman who has a superhero identity known as Nightwing. In short, there are a lot of options for Cavill to return to the world of DC movies. And with the new Superman putting the franchise in a confident direction, it seems that anything is Gunn Already Has a Brilliant Fix For DC's Most Brutal Firing first appeared on Men's Journal on Jul 19, 2025

However, the DC co-head took to his Threads account and shared that no casting for the role of Wonder Woman has been done yet. Moreover, he also revealed that the actors for the new movie will be locked in only after the script is complete. Further on his social media, the Superman director claimed that he, along with the team, has marked Wonder Woman a priority. With the David Corenswet starrer garnering good reviews, the upcoming film has been fast-paced. James Gunn on casting of Wonder Woman The DC boss, on Threads, responded to the queries about the casting of Wonder Woman. Gunn shared, "...We're also not casting WW, nor even discussing it, until a script is finished.' Furthermore, the director went on to talk about Milly Alcock's casting in Supergirl. After dropping the first poster of the film, the co-head of DCU replied to a post claiming that the actress was roped in based on her previous roles. Gunn stated, "Nope. And I'd never in a million years look for a major role based on whether they did TV, films, or whatever. It's all about the casting. I didn't cast Milly because of her past, but because she was the best one for the role." He went on to explain that Alcock was perfect to play the character and hence was cast in the film. Another one of the users asked if Wonder Woman was fast-paced at the studios, considering the success of Superman. To this, the DC head shared, 'It's a priority but I wouldn't call that fast-tracked. Nothing is going to be shot unless we're as sure as we can be that the script is good.' Speaking about Arjona's casting, Gunn clarified that just because he follows the actress on Instagram does not mean that she has got the role in his film. Details about DC's Wonder Woman will be rolled out soon.
