Salesman slapped by excise inspector for charging 10 extra for a beer bottle
Noida: A liquor salesman in Greater Noida was allegedly slapped and pelted with a belt by an excise inspector for overcharging customers. The district excise officer has initiated a departmental inquiry. Manish Kumar (29) of Dadri, who works as a salesperson at a model shop in Jagat Farm, claimed he sustained severe injuries on his limbs and chest after he was brutally assaulted by excise inspector Chandra Shekhar. His family staged a protest outside the DM's office on Saturday after cops refused to register a complaint. The victim claimed Shekhar and a constable came to the model shop around 8.30 pm on Friday and accused him of overcharging customers. "When I told the officer that I did not overcharge, the inspector slapped me multiple times. He removed the CCTV camera's DVR and then put me into his vehicle and took me to the excise office in Greater Noida's Sector Delta 3. Once in the office, he assaulted me with a belt and left me there in a severely bruised state," Manish claimed. The salesman claimed he was left in the excise office for hours before his brother, Rohit, who also works at the model shop, got to know about the assault later that night and came to pick him up around midnight. The family subsequently tried to submit a formal complaint on the emergency helpline, Dial 112, and then at several police posts, but in vain. On Saturday, they gathered outside DM's office in Greater Noida. The district excise officer, Subodh Kumar, told TOI their team had received a complaint against the salesman for charging customers Rs 10 more than MRP for beer bottles on Friday. "Excise inspector Chandra Shekhar and a constable were sent to the shop for an inspection. In his initial statement, the inspector said that when he reached the shop, the salesperson was drunk and misbehaved with them. The two officials took the salesperson to their car to impose a challan, but the latter fled from the spot," the DEO said, adding that it was possible that Manish may have hurt himself later. "A departmental inquiry has been initiated. Appropriate action will be taken based on the findings of the inquiry," the DEO said.

Nizamabad DEO is on a mission to solve the ‘fear of math'
Hyderabad: The District Education Officer (DEO) of Nizamabad, Parshi Ashok, has took on the additional responsibility of teaching mathematics to govt school students every day from 8 am to 9 am. He believes this initiative will help students strengthen their math skills as they enter Class X in the 2025-26 academic year. Ashok conducts the classes via Zoom, voluntarily offering special coaching to the students. So far, as many as 500 students have been attending classes. "Because of summer vacation, students may engage in various sports or other activities of their choice. However, I felt that if they can spare just one hour, they can be better prepared to understand mathematics when the new academic year begins in June," DEO Ashok told TOI. The informal teaching sessions began on April 25 and will continue till June 11. He teaches topics such as quadrilateral angles, trigonometry, and logarithms. Ashok, who holds an MSc degree in mathematics, believes that laying a strong foundation in the subject can foster students' interest and reduce their fear of it. He added that one of the first opportunities students get after completing SSC is securing a seat in polytechnic. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like American Investor Warren Buffett Recommends: 5 Books For Turning Your Life Around Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo Before his appointment as DEO in Nizamabad in Nov 2024, the 59-year-old, a native of Kumaram Bheem Asifabad, conducted similar classes for three years — teaching Class 9 students in preparation for X. "After SSC, nearly 60 to 70 students who appeared for polytechnic entrance exams were able to secure seats," he said. Some staff members have also joined Ashok in his voluntary effort to teach students. "They should be able to appear for engineering entrance examinations in the future with confidence based on what they are learning now," Ashok said. On May 29, to assess the students' progress, an examination was conducted for 40 students at a ZPHS school from 10 am to 11.30 am. "From their performance in the test, I could gauge that the students had grasped the subject well," he said. Impressed with the DEO himself taking classes for their children, the parents of the students felicitated him. While more students have shown interest in joining the Zoom classes in Nizamabad now, the platform's 500-participant limit is proving to be a hurdle. In addition to his role as DEO, Ashok also serves as a senior lecturer at the District Institute of Education and Training College, Nizamabad. "Students should be equipped to attend IIT and JEE exams as well. Building a strong foundation in mathematics will help them," he said. Kumaram Bheem Asifabad District Science Officer (DSO) K Madhukar recalls that when Ashok was posted as Nizamabad DEO five years ago, he conducted Zoom classes for Class VI students. A 'Master Minds' programme, launched under his guidance to offer extra coaching classes for Class X students, is still being continued. In fact, online classes for class X were held from 4 am to 6 am to ensure they weren't left behind academically compared to their private counterparts. Gundeti Bhavana, a student of Telangana Model School in Asifabad, had the opportunity to learn from the DEO Ashok and Madhukar during her ninth and tenth standards. Now, a second-year student at IIIT-Basar, the 17-year-old said, "Like many others, I greatly benefitted from the teaching and the special interest given to our studies." She is currently enrolled in a six-year integrated B Tech programme after Class X. Another student, Salpana Lavanya, who completed her Intermediate, is planning to pursue nursing. A student of ZPSS Vempally, Lavanya said the online classes helped her understand the subjects better. She opted for BiPC in Intermediate, as she has a strong interest in Science.

Shifted teachers to get new postings by June 20: Govt
Patna: All 1.30 lakh teachers who have been transferred within Bihar will receive their new school allotments by June 20 and are required to join their new postings by June 30. The announcement was made on Saturday by S Siddharth, additional chief Secretary of the state's education department. Transferred teachers will be automatically relieved from their previous postings upon joining the newly allotted schools. Responding to queries during his weekly programme Shiksha ki Baat – Har Shanivaar, Siddharth urged transferred teachers not to make unnecessary visits to the district education office (DEO), stressing that the school allocation process is being conducted with complete transparency. He also addressed concerns about students not receiving their textbooks before the summer holidays. Expressing dissatisfaction over the issue, he assured that textbooks would be made available immediately after the holidays. "I will personally review the matter and take action against those found guilty," he said. During his address, Siddharth also shared several suggestions for parents. He recommended creating dedicated reading corners at home to help children develop a focused study environment. He stressed the importance of attending every parent-teacher meeting to stay updated on their children's academic progress and to identify areas where additional support may be needed. He suggested recognising children selected as 'Student of the Week' in front of their parents to boost their confidence. Reminding parents that holiday homework had been given before the summer break and is also available on the department's website, he encouraged children to enjoy their holidays with family, either by travelling or taking part in summer camps organised by the department.
